Letterfinlay Lodge Hotel
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Spean Bridge
Reviewed 27 December 2013

My wife and i spent two nights in the Lochy suite at Letterfinlay Lodge on the 30/31st of October as a quiet base for our wedding in Glen Etive. Because of the occasion we wanted to find something a little bit special where we could relax before and after the ceremony, and in trying to locate accomodation we were met with either the typical highland b&bs which are perfectly quaint but not what we were after or the uber expensive luxury of a castle. And then we stumbled upon Letterfinlay Lodge while trawling through various locations online and we were so glad we did. Set in a beautiful spot beside the sprawling Loch Lochy just fifteen mins or so north of Ft William, Letterfinlay provides a venue which retains the charms of the country's scenery whilst giving the comfort and class of the modern world.
One of the reasons we love this area of the country is because the scenery offers something beautifully different at any given time of the year and indeed, our short stay here was filled with rain, clouds and a cold wind all of which only contrived to make the scenery around the hotel look all the more dramatic and it was lovely to watch the cloud roll over the hills and loch. Indoors the reception and dining areas are representative of decorative Scottish charm, comfortable and cosy. The dining area is situated to the rear of the building overlooking the loch which just amplifies the serenity as you enjoy a delicious breakfast. Happily there was also vegetarian sausages which i am reliably informed were some of the best my wife Susan has ever tasted. On the subject of food we were only able to have one evening meal which was excellent. I had pork belly and while i can't remember what the veggie option was i do know that both meals didn't last overly long on the plate after the first bite!
As i said, we chose the Lochy suite which is an apartment just a 30 sec walk from reception. As we arrived a little late and it was dark the girl at the desk was kind enough to come around with us so we could find the door, especially good of her as it was pouring down. The suite itself has plenty of space with a bright clean interior, very comfy king size bed, plasma tv, small living room area and a glamorous bathroom with illuminated his and hers mirrors and sinks along with a large deep bath which i can guarantee is big enough for two (snigger)
So what else to say? Well, apart from the beautiful location, great food and very friendly staff there isn't really anything else to say other than if you are looking for a place to stay which is more than the usual quaint tartan clad b&b but not as expensive as the boutique castles around this area then you cannot go wrong with this highland gem.

Room Tip: The suites overlooking the loch provide personal balconies.

Had a lovely stay over on DBB package!!this is a cracking little hotel with a beautiful location and well worth a visit!!we stayed in room 4 Kate mclaren which is a lovely room, comfy bed!fiancee and me enjoyed the warm hospitality of the staff!!shame our stay was ruined by some drunk idiot fighting at 2:30 am in the next room!!but that's not the hotels fault and I have recommended this cracking hotel to all at work!looking forward to visiting again-one small thing-the gap between door /floor-the light came through from the hall but other than this keep up the good work!!

First the good. The hotel is beautifully situated and the view over the loch is superb. The room I had was modern and well decorated with good quality fixtures and fittings. The room was on the small side, being one of the rooms in the more recently built annex, and the view from there was correspondingly restricted by the size of the window. There was also quite a bit of noise from other guests going in and out of their neighbouring rooms. The dining area is in a conservatory style area with amazing views, and the guest lounge is quite inviting though I'm not sure a pool table is a particularly welcome addition should it be in use if you are trying to read or watch TV - dunno. The biggest problems for me were my main meal arriving to me barely warm, and with disappointingly undercooked processed chips; and the fact that my pint of Guinness cost £4.50. That's about £1 more than I think I've paid just about anywhere else, except for a 5 star hotel on St Stephen's Green in Dublin. I would also like to point out that since I posted this review originally several months ago, I have been on the receiving end of a good deal of abuse and harassment from the hotel manager and so would strongly advise giving this hotel a miss as the risks associated with offering honest criticism is not worth the upset and offence you receive in return.

As you can guess we had a very unpleasant experience with this problem guest ! it all started when some very nice children were playing pool in the back lounge while Mr weasel was reading a book he became very angry with them and their parents had to intervene in the very uncomfortable situation ! he was also asked to behave himself by a female member of staff which he did not like as he stormed of muttering something about NO woman tells me what to do !!! The Staff at letterfinlay are fantastic and the service provided is way above the standard of a 3 star hotel therefore i hope that our genuine reviewers can take this review for what its worth , kind regards

A nice, clean hotel with impressive wood paneled public rooms - although the dining room was not reflective of the older part of the hotel. One downside for us was that we selected the Lochy Suite which in itself was excellent - very spacious and well appointed (2 TVs!!) but it required us to walk outside the main hotel - down a set of stairs and up another set. The weather (wind and rain during our visit) made this a bit of an ordeal but in fine conditions would not be too challenging. To the hotel's credit, we were offered an alternative room - but we declined.
The food was good although the menu system was rather complex - we were on a DB&B tariff basis and had to work through 3 different menus which were interchangeable with assocaited cost implication. Perhaps a more simple system could be devised?
Overall we enjoyed our stay and will be revisiting - thanks to the personal attention from Lindsay and Agnes.

Thank you for the great review and we are sorry you found our DBB menu confusing ? however we think that the £20 allowance to eat of the regular menu or specials board is Quite simple . kind regards

My partner and I spent a while looking online for an affordable break away to celebrate our anniversary. We were on a really tight budget as we are expecting our first baby in January.

We found a great deal through easy-breaks.com for 2 nights dinner, bed & breakfast with a bottle wine - the staff were happy to substitute the wine with soft drinks for us.

We booked a standard double and were given a good sized family room which had views of the loch. It was lovely and cosy, as well as spotless, as was the ensuite shower room.

The 3 course dinner menu offered a good selection. The quality of the food was fantastic and the portion sizes were ideal - not too small like some places who offer a discounted set menu.

On the first night my partner went to get us some drinks from the bar and nearly keeled over when he was charged £5.40 for 3 cans of juice. That said, we were charged £1.90 per can at a cafe when out and about the next day. So whilst £1.80 is more expensive than I'd like to pay, the price seems to be on par with other places in the area.

The service was great and the staff were really friendly.

We hope to return again one day with our little one :)

Just a quick note to say that my wife and I were extremely impressed by this hotel. The staff were extremely welcoming, very friendly and very helpful. The en-suite room with fantastic view across the Loch, and hotel were clean and well kept (except it would be good if they used dry seasoned wood on the sitting room fire....but the coal made up for that!)

The food? What can I say? Very delicious even within the range of options offered with the package we had through Easybreaks. Upgrading to other menu options would not have been too expensive had it been something we'd wanted to do, but we didn't really find that necessary. Breakfast options were delicious!

All in all. Well impressed. Thanks guys.

Gordon & Sue
