“Beautiful retreat”

This is a beautiful cottage in a remote location. I wanted a few days away from it all, and this was ideal.

The cottage is very comfortable. Upstairs, there is a generously sized luxury bathroom and a lovely bedroom, with views out over the loch from the dormer windows in both rooms. The landing is a cosy spot too. The living room isn't huge, but it's fine for one or two, and the kitchen is modern and well equipped. (There's a Tassimo machine, so bring capsules of your choice, as I expect they won't be easy to get on Skye.) There's WiFi, Sky TV, a DVD player, DVDs, books and games to supplement your own stuff, so you're not stuck even if it rains so much that you don't want to step outside (as it did one day for me!) There's a good range of maps and a few books about walks in the area.

The house is at the very end of a quiet single track road. I found the road a bit scary the first time, but I soon got to love it. (Find the detour to avoid the blind summit junction on the way out!) The roads out in this part of Skye are quiet and the other drivers are very friendly.

Glendale is one of the quieter parts of Skye, and that's its charm. You do need to be well organised with food shopping. The croft "farm shop" across the road had very little for sale when I was there, and there were a few people selling eggs at their gate; other than that, for supplies it was a 5 mile drive to the village shop in Glendale (closed on Sunday), and a longer drive to the other shop in Dunvegan. The only supermarkets are a fair distance away in Portree or Broadford. That's a bit of a culture shock to a townie like me! There are also not very many options for eating out. It's just a case of being organised, especially for cooking, as you don't want a 10 mile drive because you forgot the onions.

Overall, this a lovely place to spend some time and to experience a gentler pace of life.
