“Great Anniversary”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

My wife and I had a wonderful experience at the Burrowing Owl Estate. The accommodations were immaculate, the staff was eager to help and the food was great. Gorgeous view overlooking the vineyard, Osoyoos Lake and Okanagan Valley. If you want a romantic place to stay, this is it. We celebrated our 37th anniversary while staying here.

Room Tip: They are all great. But the penthouse is spectacular.

Burrowing Owl is such a delightful place in the Okanagan! Besides their wines, some of the best in Okanagan, they have wonderful on-site facilities, such as private guest rooms with lovely amenities, and a lovely restaurant, Sonora Room.
This past summer we visited from S CA and due to a DVD by James Cluer we were under a bit of confusion regarding what exactly is the winery's role and involvement in preserving the flora and fauna around the winery, and specifically the Burrowing Owl.
Since then however we researched the issue and have been very impressed by the winemaker's involvement with fauna preservation, especially their efforts on behalf of the burrowing owl. As big fans of this winery and what they do to rescue burrowing owls, we felt it was important to share this with the readers on Trip Advisor.
If you have watched just like us the DVD by James Cluer about this winery, please disregard the few notes about the fact that the winery's name was chosen "accidentally". This is not true. The winemakers here have fully embraced the cause of the Burrowing Owl and their efforts in saving this lovely little creature have been outstanding.
As wine connoisseurs and wine collectors, we have traveled to various places in N America and EU for wine tasting.
We think that it is PRECISELY this aspect that differentiates Burrowing Owl and other wineries in British Columbia from other wineries we have visited around the world. It is endeering to see how these winemakers share their passion for preserving the soil, protecting endangered species living there, sharing the land with all beings... and this aspect is at its best with the Burrowing Owl winery.
We feel that due to this special interest in their land, British Columbia wineries have given a new meaning to the word "terroir".
We feel this is a VERY important aspect as a philosophy and personal belief of Burrowing Owl, because it is this very passion that makes them unique.
It is such a pity this aspect was not emphasized in Mr. James Cluer's DVD about Burrowing Owl winery - people who watch this should be sensitized to this aspect because it is this humanity beyond just making and selling wine that makes Burrowing Owl unique. .
Thank you kindly for a memorable experience at the Burrowing Owl!

We greatly enjoyed our two nights in November 2011 on the 'Harvest Package'.

The guest house has just ten rooms, very spacious and well fitted, with excellent bed and bathroom, oozing luxury. Great off-season value for the quality involved.

The nights we stayed were Wed & Thursday, and restaurant is only open Thur - Sun. So we went to Osoyoos on Wed evening for dinner - nothing to recommend from that! But we had invested in a fine bottle of wine (and some cheese and crackers) for the comfort of our room in the otherwise deserted house. Excellent!

Dinner in the Sonora restaurant on Thursday (included in package, but wine is extra) was also high quality. Breakfast was less to our taste - not the standard bacon & eggs & toast.

Burrowing Owl rather stands out on the valleyside, not a beautiful construction, but delightful inside. We certainly recommend it.

Be aware - the water smells of sulphur briefly when tap is turned on, but this passes very quickly. It is NOT a reason to miss a stay here.

Room Tip: All rooms have essentially the same view, but there is a very large penthouse suite (which we did no...

Big, airy rooms, lovely beds and bathroom facilities (separate tub and shower), salt water lap pool, great breakfasts, superb restaurant, great wines and oh-so-peaceful. Only 10 rooms, so getting a reservation can be dodgy. Worth the effort, and worth the money, too for a healthy dose of peace and quiet. Not to mention the great views of the vines and the valley.

My wife and I spent one night at the Burrowing Owl Guest House in early November. It has a beautiful location, set back on a hillside in the middle of the Burrowing Owl vineyards. The guest house itself is very private. We checked in a little late (5:00) and we only saw one other couple. We didn't see or hear anyone else until the next morning when seven other couples showed up for breakfast. According to the hostess, there was only one empty room in the guest house!

The room itself was very well laid out. The floors and bathroom were floored with stone tiles, but the room felt cozy, despite the cold weather outside. Our only complaints were the toilet, which rocked forward and backwards on the tiles, and the lack of any in-room music. There was a DVD/CD player in the room, but no CDs; there was no music station available on the TV; and the clock radio delivered mostly static. I had to go out to the car to pick up some CDs to play in the room, and the blue glow provided by the LCD TV when using the DVD player did not help the ambiance. Overall, however, these were small complaints.

The highlight of our stay was the food and wine. Dinner in the restaurant was fabulous -- delicious food paired with intense red wines. I highly recommend the three course meal package available with the room. The staff in the restaurant were friendly and cheerful. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and experience. Breakfast was also wonderful. The food was, again, delicious, and Iris, who looks after the food in the breakfast room, is a cheerful and friendly hostess. We felt very welcome there.

I highly recommend the Guest House for any couple looking for a romantic getaway who enjoys good food and wine. You will not do better in the Okanagan Valley.
honestly thought we were one of only two rooms that were occupied

From the moment we first saw the place a few years ago, we new we had to stay here. It's become an annual event and we have never been disappointed. The guest house is fantastic and it's that, along with the friendly staff and Iris' "to die for" homemade breakfast in the guest house that make the place so special. The restaurant and food is also great and of course the wine is excellent. If there is one thing that could be improved, we would suggest more variety in the restaurant food choices. Even having a daily special would go a long way.

I stayed here for two nights in October as part of a wine vacation with my Mother. This was our first trip to the Okanagan wine country. The room was clean and beautiful. The vineyard view from the room was incredible. But we found the staff at the guest house and the tasting room to be disinterested and unfriendly. The morning breakfast was an unimpressive mix of eggs benedict type dishes that was left sitting too long in a warming tray. But the homemade granola was nice.
I would stay here again for the lovely room but hopefully they will hire some new staff and improve the quality of their food. For the price they charge I think they should incorporate a few small touches to improve the guest experience. Like maybe a complimentary glass of wine at check in. I used to love Burrowing Owl wines and could not wait to stay here but I just do not feel the same about them after this trip. I found many other wineries in the area that had delicious wines and offered a warm and welcoming wine tasting room experience with educated and engaged staff.
