Hotel Casa del Rio
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Tlacotalpan
Reviewed 30 August 2011

The room (the 'suite') we had was bare, no extra furniture (like armchairs, table), although the bathroom and shower were good. Fortunately the windows (overlooking the river) shut tight, thus prventing thousands of mosquitos from coming in.

Breakfast was very simple, and over-priced.

Beware of sundowners on the 'terrace' by the river - mosquitos again.

There must be better options in Tlacotalpan.

The completely remodeled 19th century Casa del Rio sparkles with comfort, style and the type of graciousness that makes you never want to leave. The modern hotel is located in the charming town of Tlacotalpan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the state of Veracruz, where the homes are painted brilliant shades of every color imaginable. The town is a photographer’s dream-come-true ---picture perfect wherever you look. The 9 rooms of the Inn are spacious and comfortable with some overlooking the wide Papaloapan River. Little touches like fresh bottled water every day, thick soft towels, luxurious bedding etc. made us feel pampered and comfortable. But the real charm of the hotel lies in its incredible staff -- gracious, friendly and eager to help us find the best their lovely little town has to offer. Although when we were there, it was the busiest time of the year, they went out of their way to help us find our way around town and beyond. By the time we left, we felt like family, sad to leave this very special place. The managers, Elena, a metallurgist and her husband, Juan, a chemical engineer made sure we had everything we needed and more. Both also speak perfect French, with most of the staff speaking a bit of English. Their charming son Juan who speaks perfect English as well as other languages, also works at the hotel and his lively conversation helped make our stay even more memorable

At the inn, dining is available either in a courtyard or at tables overlooking the river where watching the sunsets over drinks is the perfect way to relax after a day of festivities. The chef, from Mexico City was so good that we ate breakfast and dinner at the inn every day we were there. We quickly discovered that when you find the best, there’s no reason to go elsewhere.

We were there during Candelaria, a famous pre-Lenten festival when people from all over the world come to hear the traditional Jaraneros music, watch the running of the bulls and join in a procession and regatta of the Virgin of the Candelaria up the river. We have too many stories to tell here about this incredible festival. Suffice it to say, we were very lucky to get a room at Casa del Rio which had just opened in January. Most people book rooms a year in advance. One of our friends had stayed at Dona Lala’s, another upscale hotel in town last year but felt the Casa del Rio was far superior. Tlacotalpan is a bit off the beaten path but so worth the effort to visit. If you find yourself in Veracruz, do yourself a favor and visit charming Tlacotalpan and spend a few days at the Casa del Rio.
