Alistair Rattray was our guide as we were staying at the Fugitives' Drift Lodge. On the drive over to the battle field site we heard a commentary by his late father on why the conflict had arisen, this made the tour so much more interesting and understandable. We stopped at various places on route where Alistair pointed out the different locations of the Zulu warriors before the attack.
On arrival at the site, we where treated to an hour and a half's most interesting and enlightening talk on the battle,(shaded by a tree with iced water and comfy camping chairs) the various British positions, and where the troops had formed up, and why they were there, this made the battle come to life. White stone cairns marked the place where bodies had been found, and were buried. We then wondered over the site with this knowledge and I found it difficult to understand how such a large force, with Henry Martin rifles, could so quickly have been annihilated. It is worth reading up on this battle and realizing that it need never have happened, but that is another story again.

Without a guide, the terrain would be as unreadable as wandering the Roman Forum on your own. An excellent guide to Isandlwana who can tell you about how the events unfolded is a must.

A friend and I visited in February, which was very hot. We arrived early after visiting the small museum nearby and buying entry tickets. As our time was short we didn't need a guide, but done some reading beforehand to understand the troop movements. On entering the site, we parked the car and wandered around the lower slopes of isandlwana, and was struck by the view the redcoats would have had of the Zulus. The stone cairns mark burial sites of the dead British, and these cairns become more numerous as you walk into the site. We climbed up to the higher part of the hill, near a big pile of stones, and was surprised to see a number of other cairns hidden amongst the rocks. It must have been absolutely terrifying to have fought and died here. If you are able, climb the rock to look over the battlefield and also see where the fugitives made their escape. Wear a hat and sunscreen, and you'll really enjoy seeing this famous site.
