Not a great choice. This was the end of our safari, we spent 4 nights and found the staff very polite and helpful but were disappointed a few things. Showers were salt water, as was the pool. I could understand the pool, but prefer fresh water. The shower, however, is just not right when salt water. What really got me about this that it was nowhere in the resort information....felt rather....well, misled. The included breakfast was repetitive, sparse, lackluster. We'd been to several hotels on our Safari and this was the worst of all the breakfasts. The rooms were nice enough, not the best views. The beach was 2 level, the first for resort guests and nice enough, though more lounge chairs would be nice.....bit competitive getting one. The main beach was mossy, slimy, muddy when the tide went out not inviting to go into the water when the tide came in, 20 minute walk north to get to nice beach to swim/enjoy. The sand on the beach that didn't get covered by the tide was very nice, white sugar sand, good for a walk or run on. The restaurant was ok, not a very varied menu, rather tiresome after a couple of days, and the prices were on the higher side.....certainly no bargin.

Room Tip: Look for something that is in the corner of the property, many look out over the parking lots/drivew...

We staid at the hotel 3 days in July 2013. This was our last days in Tanzania for our honeymoon. At last we were very disappointed by the hotel. First, the floor of our room was dirty and sticky when we arrived. Then there was a permanent awful smell in the room, due to a bad sewage system... very annoying! The sanitary water (shower, etc.) was salty! The beach for the hotel was not really the kind you dream on : rocky, fully covered with sea grass during the low tide. We had to walk like 30 minutes northward to get a nice one. Finally, the price for the restaurant were to our point of view very high and the quality of the dishes did not worth the prices... We do no recommend this hotel, choose instead another one, like the crystal palace.

Overall the resort is a very nice and recommendable place. However we experienced a number of similar moments like some of the previous posts reported: the excellence of the waiters varies a lot and is almost unpretictable. Sometimes the service was just perfect, other times very lausy. I also missed that the german management is more present at the guest side such as welcome new guests etc. It is a by chance opportunity to speak to the resort management. Most of the time the management is just walking by not giving special attention to their guests.

Dinner was always perfect. Compliments to the kitchen. Breakfast is average. Every morning the same and varity is very limited. Room for improvement.

A plus is as well that the resort is located at a quiet area of the island. Almost no beachboys annoying you and the endless beaches offer unique moments for romantic walks or sport activities.

A very warm hearted person is Dutchy who takes care about the water sport activities. We did the dolphin tour which we would recommend to everyone. Thanks Dutchy for your special and very warm service to your customers!!!

We stopped by here for dinner recently, but were disappointed. First, they let us book a table for 630 without telling us that the kitchen began cooking at 730. Not great when you have a hungry toddler. Also not great was the inappropriate movie showing in the restaurant on a huge screen. Grilled prawns (all three of them as a starter) were good but we left feeling hungry and out of pocket. Prices here are almost double what you can pay in restaurants nearby, and while they might be classed as "cuisine", the portions were small and uninspired. The waiters tried to help but could only say "I asked my boss...." when we complained about the film etc ...

The Spice Island Resort proved to be a wonderful and authentic place on Zanzibar. With only 35 spacious , well furbished and tidy bungalows it is ideally located in an area which is still not occupied by large hotels and too many tourists.
With a large pool and access to the sea by a jetty which allows swimming even at low tide there is plenty of fun for chidren and adults likewise. The Restaurant is nicely designed, food good and service very attentive.
The whole place is well run by a capable management. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Several tours are offered of which the Swimming with Delphins combined with snorkeling on undamaged coral reefs and a voluptious lunch on a Sandbank were absolute Highlights.
I stayed for a week with six members of my family and can recommend the house to all those who are looking for a quiet and really African holiday

Perfectly located directly at the jambiani-beach, offering its own terrasse 100m out on the ocean. Best Afternoon for a very long time out there.

Very nice Staff, great Service, great Food & Drinks, European upclass room-Standard, huge Pool & superhuge Main-Hut with fine Dinner-Area and Maximum relaxing daybeds where Drinks and Food are served to. Never loosing the familiar atmosphere during all that. A+++

We spent five nights at this hotel, and experienced the BBQ by the poolside both Sunday and Wednesday. It is a nice hotel but with great potential. The service varied a lot from excellent and smiling from some staff to almost non-existing from others. One example, it shouldn't take one hour to serve a coffee, or 50 minutes to serve a bottle of water to the poolside.

The rooms were very nice, spacy and with AC. The WIFI reached the room as well, and the price is very reasonable.

The dinner was very good, both the menu and the BBQ. From the lunch menu, some of the dishes was very good (try the swahili style), while others was almost uneatable (never try the burger). Breakfast was ok, but just average.

The staff in the reception was very helpful, and they arranged both diving and spice tours. The spice tour was not really all that, but the diving was good. Bucaneer Diving was the centre.

The pool was nice and very children-friendly. The beach is not very usable due to the low tide. The pier was good, but the staff should go to Esque in Nungvi to really learn how a pier can be.

All in all a good hotel to visit, but they have such a great potential to improve. If you include the beach and some bad service, it is a 3/5 but without considering the beach, it can be a 4/5.
