Captain Cook came and found us on the beach on our first day and persuaded us to eat with him that night. More of a back garden than a restaurant, I think the fact that we had one of the many Zanzibarian powercuts didn't do much for the atmosphere! Food was tasty enough but not very warm, chips undercooked. That said, Capt Cook was a lovely chap, very enterprising and doing his best to make a living for himself and his family.

We never would have found this place on our own but we were joined by the owner of the little local gallery. There was a bit of a wait but it was pleasant and the beer was cold and I swear the owner ran down to the beach to get the fish fresh from the boats. The food was abundant, the owner sat and regaled us with stories and it felt like we had been invited into a local home for lunch. I had the coconut crusted fish which everyone agreed was the best choice of many good choices.

We were lucky enough to run into "Captain Cook" on our first morning in Jambiani. After telling us a little about local customs, he invited us to his restaurant for lunch. We decided to give it a try and we are glad we did -- we had lunch that day and both of the following days; he even made us a packed lunch on the fourth day for our trip back to Stonetown!
Our favorites were the coconut crusted fish and the "Capt Cook" Style dessert. His training at South African culinary school is evident (he is proud to show off his diploma and he'll also proudly show you the travel article from a Norwegian newspaper of which he was the subject). He is an enterprising young businessman who is slowly building up his restaurant and guesthouse as funds become available. Eating here you get a taste of the local cuisine and get to know a "real" local person. Don't miss trying it!

The place itself is not a restaurant, not even a small one. Basically it is the place Captain Cook and his family live in, a house and a small courtyard with one table covered with a filthy table linen. We took grilled octopus, prawns and fish. The octopus was boiled not grilled, impossible to be eaten, really discusting; fish was good but nothing special and the prawns average. The main problem is not the food but the fact that the place does not inpire cleanliness. Apart from this, captain Cook and his brother are nice persons, we felt ok from this perspective. Prices are comparable to those from the hotel.
