“a place to feel like home in paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2010

We came to zanzibar for two weeks honey moon vacation. At first We didnt know where we wanted to stay but when we got the coral rock hotel, we fell in love with the place. We actually couldn`t leave and we stayed there the entire 12 nights. The owners Neil and Jill, were very warm hosts, did everything to make us feel comfortable and enjoy every second of our time there. The staff were very nice and were always there when we needed them. And then there was Pedro. When we were thinking about seeing other beaches in zanzibar, Pedro`s energy and presence made it imposible for us to leave. Thank you Pedro for adding spice to every dish in the corak rock.
We strongly recomend the coral rock for honeymoon and every other vacation.

An absolutely stunning location in Jambiani with a beautiful view from the restaurant which juts out over the beach! Really friendly staff and owners who made us feel really welcome. Food was really very good and while more expensive than other places and in $ rather than TSh, was probably worth it. Some things were a tad more expensive than we thought they needed to be, especially having spent 10 weeks in Tanzania and having an idea of how much things costed. e.g. Water, which is sort of a necessity with no drinking water on tap, was 2 dollars for a large bottle but round the corner in a small store was a third of the price. This was really the only thing that as stingy students bugged us, in what was otherwise a lovely 5 days in Paradise. Thanks for having us and we have already recommended coral rock to friends!!!

Thanks for your kind review. I'm happy you enjoyed your stay with us. I just wanted to comment on the price of water mentioned in your review... Firstly, you will almost cerainly never find a hoel that sells food and drink at local market prices, the reasons for this are relaed to overheadssuch as service, location, convenience, rent, preperation, staff etc, over here you need to add to the fact that the local businesses will be cheaper as they are not subject to VAT, TAX, Social security, tourism levies, sills development , refrigeration, ice, glasses and other costs etc that we have to pay. I don't believe charging $2 for 1,5 litres of botled water in an internationl hotel is expensive at all, wat till you hit mini-bar prices in your hotel rooms in major cities where I've paid $10 for a 200ml cokeb efore. But the most important factor to consider, and I mention this because there's been a lot of it happening hre lately - people come back to buy water from us after discovering that the lid of their bottle watter has been tampered with, either at the seal or lately by slicing open the top rim of the cap, not only are you getting unhealthy tap water not fit for consumpton, but the fact that water is free for these people means they are the ones really overcharging you. I must stress that this is not always the case but it is happening with increased frequency. Being sick for some days of your holiday is not worth saving a dollar on some bottled water. Be safe and we hope to see you again one day soon

- Where do we even begin...? - This is gonna be a looooong review.... :)
If you think the review is too long and you cant be bothered reading it, then take our advice: Just go there - The Coral Rock is such a lovely place!

We stayed at The Coral Rock Hotel for our honeymoon, in September 2010, for 10 nights and we had an absolutely AMAZING stay!
It seems as though a lot of zanzibar travellers first do Safari´s on the African mainland and then pop over to Zanzibar for a relaxing few days at the end of their trip. But zanzibar is perfect for spending a whole holiday in aswell, like we did!

Neil, the managing director, and his lovely wife Gillian, and the rest of the staff took such good care of us and went out of their way to make sure we were happy and had a good stay. They are truly warm and friendly people, ever so thoughtful, and they work hard to keep standards up and to keep their guests satisfied.

Both of us work within the travel/airline business and therefore enjoy staff discounts on flights, and sometimes also accommodation, and as a result we do a lot of travelling all over the world, so we have plenty to compare from.
Destination, accommodation and way of travelling completely depends on what we are looking for in that perticular trip and so we do everything from budget backpacking to top end 5 star luxury hotels.
(although we would like to point out that Coral Rock Hotel is not a part of our discount selection, so this review is not based on anything else than our honest opinion. We paid the normal deluxe room rates listed online.)

We really dont have the time or the energy to submit reviews of even a fraction of all the places we stay in, so we only write reviews of the places that have made a special impression on us during our stay, be it an excellent one or a really bad one.

This was our first time in Africa (well, except for northern Africa; Marrocco and Tunisia) and we chose to go to Zanzibar because we had heard so many great things about the island from one of our colleagues who is equally as big lover of travelling in Asia as we are, and he said that Zanzibar easily could give any South East Asian country a good run for their money.
- And how very true indeed! We loved it!

We often get the question "since you travel so much, what would you say is your favourite place to go to/best beach etc etc.." )
- That question is more or less impossible to answer in our opinion as its difficult to compare different countries, culture, food, beaches etc.
However I dare say that the beaches on east coast Zanzibar are very good, and when the tide goes out and you walk along the sandbank out to the water, that turquise water and white sand will beat most beaches anywhere. The colours are just fantastic and it looks a bit like the Maldives! Combine those beautiful beaches with the warm and friendly zanzibar locals and warm and colourful culture and it is truly paradise! Everywhere you go you are greeted by the locals with a friendly smile and a "Jambo!"

KEEP IN MIND that this is Africa.
If you´re after "military precision perfection" you should go and check into a 5 star hotel in Germany instead :)
As the hotel website points out; If you are looking for a typical 4 or 5 star resort of South African, European or US standard, The Coral Rock Hotel is not for you. However if you are interested in cultural tourism and not just looking for a generic island holiday, this might be just the place you are looking for.
The hotel is located in the village of Jambiani and as lovely, safe and friendly Zanzibar is, it is still 3rd world, rural and poor, and it should not be confused with being a inexpensive equivalent to Mauritius or the Seychelles.
Zanzibar has frequent power cuts and this is something you´ll probably experience where ever you end up staying on the island, and the Coral Rock is not an excepton.
They have back up generators that they use when needed and during the power cuts we had during our stay, we could see the staff running around like mad in order to get the situation fixed as soon as possible for the guests. And they always did within matters of minuts.
We just smiled and said to eachother: "- It´s Africa. And we are in no hurry, we are here to relax and take it easy."
- So if you are willing to look at things with a relaxed attitude and appreciate The Coral Rock for what it is; a relaxed, warm and friendly, down to earth place located in a beautiful location,- you should definately give this place a try!
- We would also like to mention that we were told that most of the staff at the hotel are locals from the Village of Jambiani, and also that the hotel makes an effort to stay on really good terms with the village by helping them out as much as they can.

In our opinion, this hotel is suitable for all types of travellers - younger, older, couples, honeymooners, families with children and solo travellers.
They help you book a range of different tours around the island - we did the very interesting Spice Tour combined with the Stone Town Tour, with a wonderful gentlemen called Kazim (and guides at The Spice Farm and in Stone town were arranged by him), and we can definately recommend it. Also we recommend going out to "The Fish Tank" out by the reef, with "Captain Chicken" (real name: Ramazan), on the traditional Dhow. He is a bit of a local celebrity and he is such a lovely person! You´ll find him hanging around in the restaurant sometimes - just ask Neil for him. The fish tank is just lovely - even for children - and you´ll get to see all sorts of exotic and colourful fishes. Truly an experience! Captain Chicken will tell you all abot the different species that live on the reef and in the water - fish, starfish, sea snails etc, and lend you shoes (for walking on the reef) and snorkling gear.
We were in Zanzibar during the final week of Ramadan and the morning after the end of Ramadan Captain Chicken invited us to his house for a traditional breakfast - it was such a nice gesture, the food was excellent and it was such a fun experience to try it!

For our stay we looked at 2 or 3 other options in the same price range along the east coast, and although those places are probably very good aswell, we are vary happy we descided to stay every night at The Coral Rock.
Although we dont have anything to compare with on this destination, we talked to other travellers (younger, older, backpackers, families with children, couples, honeymooners etc) who had stayed in other places on Zanzibar and they said that The Coral Rock is one of the absolute best places in this price range and that it is well worth the few extra dollars you pay per night to stay there. You do get a lot for your money, that you may not get in other places, and the prices are not so much higher than the other ones.
Being food-lovers, we were very impressed to see that they had the menu, wine list and drink list presented on their website and that was even one of the things that helped make up our minds about staying there.

ROOMS:
The "normal" deluxe rooms may seem very basic to guests arriving straight in from Europe or the US, however they do have all you need though; hot water, Airconditioning, ceiling fan, a mini fridge, ensuite bathroom, mosquito nets, etc. - not forgetting the ocean view!
The rates are, we were told, slightly higher than in some other places in the same prices range but, except for all of the above mentioned in room amenities, a range of other things are free of use for hotel guests, like; free wifi and 3 laptops (in the TV-room/lounge area), a couple of mountain bikes, two vespas (you just need to fill it up with petrol), snorkling gear, and not forgetting the pool and the lovely restaurant with gorgeous ocean view, etc

The "Super deluxerooms"/suites that they were completing during our stay (when writing this review it is not yet published on their website, as they are not completed yet.) are going to be gorgeous and offer guests a whole other dimension of comfort than the other rooms, with things like; airy and spacious interior decorating in a contemporary African style with the floor, furniture and outside wooden deck - all made out of gorgeous coconut wood and panoramic windows offering ocean view from the bed aswell. It also has In room satellite TV, a bigger wardrobe, etc and all the other amenities of the other rooms like; A/C, ceiling fan etc.
The outside wooden deck will be completely private with stunning ocean view and give honeymooners and couples a chance to, if they wish, have a very private stay. A very nice way to spend a honeymoon or a relaxing, romantic holiday!

BREAKFAST: (see pics)
Served in the restaurant with a beautiful ocean view - what a way to start the mornings!
A selection of 3-4 different sliced Fruits (ex pineapple, papaya, banana, mango, watermelon), Cereal, Coffe, Spiced tea, and fresh Fruit Juices.
In addition, you order your choice of the warm selections from the menue and they are made a´la minut; Pancakes (with the choice of honey, cinnamon, etc), French toast, Omelettes and eggs - scrambled, boiled or poached. Just enough to get you started in the morning!

RESTAURANT and BAR:
First of all its just lovely to have the stunning view to look at during breakfast and lunch, and even though it may be to dark to actually see that much of the ocean during the evenings, you can still hear it and you get an lovely breeze in the semi-open air dining area. And they always play a nice choice of relaxing music, adding to the relaxed ambiance, and you can easily spend a few hours there just having a beer or two.

Upstairs, over the restaurant and bar, you´ll find a loft with a big lounge area. It has comfortable sofas and chairs, games, computers, satellite TV, and a very nice cool breeze all day and night. A good place just hang around in, do a little internet surfing, or just watch some telly or sports while having a drink.
Once a week they do a Pub Quiz Night - which is a lot of fun, and well worth joining in on!

THE MENU: (see pics)
Dishes from all over the world - Swahili Style!
Amazing! We were so impressed with this "cross kitchen" menu when we first laid eyes on it on their website! It is so extensive and with a big variety of dishes, that you wont even know where to begin..!
And we were super pleased with almost every dish we ordered. Some of them really impressed us a lot, and they were all beautifly presented.
The seafood is absolutely gorgeous and superfresh - they buy it every morning from local fishermen.

GETTING TO THE HOTEL / OUR STAY:
Our flight arrived in Zanzibar litterally in the middle of the night - at 4 am to be exact, and we had booked transport through the hotel. After such a long trip is was nice to have a car waiting for us when stepping out from the airport.
It was pitch black outside when we arrived at the hotel about an hour later, so we couldnt see anything of the hotelarea at all, and we were istalled in the Deluxe room we had booked and after a quick shower we went straight to sleep.
In the morning we woke up and opened up the door to get a good look outside - and what a view to wake up to...! (We were in the room upstairs, with the pool - and ocean view.) Absolutely breathtaking! In the bright sunlight all those wonderful colour of the white sand, turquise sea etc almost hurt your eyes a little bit...! Truly beautiful!

We went down to the restaurant for breakfast and Neil sat down with us for a few mins to welcome us to Coral rock, tell us a little bit about Zanzibar and our bearings and answer any questions we had. That made us feel welcome at once!
We were told that we were to spend one more night in the deluxe room and then we were to be moved to their newest addition to the hotel - the Super Deluxe Room, as a courtesy gesture for our honeymoon! And they offered us a massage in the Spa-room to get our honeymoon started right!
While we were there, as we mentioned previously, they were still in the process of completeing the two Super deluxe rooms by adding pieces of furniture and buildning sea facing private wooden decks outside the rooms.
Even though it was not yet completed - it was very luxourious and with a very high standard.

During our stay we got the chance to, every now and then, chat a little with Neil, his wife and other staff and they are all such warm and friendly people and so dedicated to making your stay a good one!

My husband got a balance disorder caused by a viral infection in his ear before going there and he was still at times feeling dizzy when in Zanzibar. Neil made sure to frequently check how he was doing. And then when I go a little bit ill during one evening he even came over to our room to check on me, give me some advise on what to eat/not to eat untill feeling better, and then he sent over, soda water and tea with lime and honey. 10 mins later one of the bartenders showed up witha special drink that was good for an upset stomach.
- How wonderful is that???? We were really moved by the thoughfulness of everyone and felt so well taken care of! It was just mindblowing really.

We loved this place and we definately recommend this hotel, as we wouldnt dream of staying anywhere else i Zanzibar after the experince we had at The Coral Rock!
We will definately go back to our newly found Paradise - hopefully real soon!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at this lovely resort. Gillian and Neil were amazing hosts, and did their very best to ensure that our stay would be memorable.
They went to the trouble of arranging a birthday table for Irvs birthday. Their staff picked palm branches, braided them decorated them with tropical flowers and attached them to the table legs crossing over the table, very dramatic and special.
We felt very relaxed and enjoyed an isolated feeling, without emails and telephones.
The ambiance was just what we needed, relaxing wonderful air and a staff who were there to tend to your comfort and needs.
I had a clove massage, which was nothing short of phenomenal, I will always remember that experience.
We are vegetarian, and the kitchen provided us with some interesting foods.
We went out with Captain Chicken on his boat, he was very protective of us both, and we snorkeled holding on to him. He provided us with the equipment which was excellent.
We would love to return with our children and grandchildren at some stage, because I have no doubt that we would have a holiday of a life time there.
Thanks again to Neil and Gillian for ensuring that we had a great time!

My wife and I have just returned from a 12 day mini-tour of Zanzibar in which we spent 4 nights in each of the Coral Rock Hotel (Jambiani), Sultan Sands (Kiwengwa) and the Hilton Doubletree Hotel (Nungwi).

We really liked and enjoyed our stay at the Coral Rock Hotel. Neil, Gillian, Daniel and Pedro took really good care of us and the whole place had a really positive and fun vibe, set in a truly stunning location on a beautiful white sand beach.

I had seen the mix of reviews before booking, some very positive and some mentioning plumbing issues etc but we had no problems at all and just had a wonderful 4 days there. They took such good care of all the guests, it was so personal, friendly, safe and "trendy" that we didn't want to leave. I can honestly recommend Coral Rock to anyone.

Pros: awesome location on a small coral rock outcrop overlooking a breathtaking beach, great views from all the rooms to watch the tide rush in/out over the vast expanse of brilliant white sands, really good varied menu in the fantastic restaurant/bar which draws tourists from all over Jambiani (and much needed shelter from the occasionally strong winds), tasty inclusive breakfasts, free internet from a beautiful mezzanine level in the bar with a view on the sea, free use of water sports equipment, nice beds + aircon + fridge in the rooms, small but nice pool which is perfectly adequate and most of all the place was tranquil, fun and had a lot of character + those personal touches that make all the difference from those boring identikit 3* and 4* hotels that we normally stay in.
Snorkeling on the reef was fun and my wife had a nice massage in the small spa.

Cons: nothing major but in the interest of being fair/ objective I should mention the bathroom of our room. Everything worked so no complaints but it could use a makeover + freshening up (e.g. some rusty fittings, broken toilet roll holder etc). Not a big deal really especially when you consider that this is a fairly remote location in zanzibar and the reasonable rates charged... but this was the only thing that wasn't really good about the room. Also worth noting that some patience is required in the restaurant/bar as the service was variable. Some really good staff (like Issa) were first class... Others needed a bit more attention and a few waves before they finally made their way over to give you a menu etc... But as they say in Africa pole pole = slowly slowly! It wasn't bad - just variable!

The only other decent place to eat in Jambiani that we found was the Blue Oyster hotel. Approx 20mins walk along the beach but good food, service etc.

We spent 5 night here this Summer and loved every second of it. On arrival, we got a complimentary massage in the little spa they have on site, and were told we had free access to all of the water sports equipment, free use of their bikes and vespas, and free internet access, which definitely made it good value for money. Breakfast was also included and was a mixture of fresh fruit, eggs, pancakes, omelettes, juices, cereals and pretty much anything else you asked for. The room was gorgeous and really clean as they got cleaned every day. There was a hot shower and the balcony looked straight down onto the beach, which was even more stunning when the tide came in where there was clear turqoise water literally a few metres down from your balcony! The pool was great and had lovely views onto the beach, and there was a chill-out area with laptops and sky TV. The menu was extensive and the food was great, slightly more expensive but Zanzibar is in general. We also made really good friends with the owners, who made us feel right at home, drinking with us till the early hours and taking us to neighbouring town Paje for a party! They even gave out free shots to all the guests to celebrate the last night before the start of Ramadan. The managers are 2 young lads from South Africa called Daniel and Pedro and they were hilarious and so much fun to be around (although I think Pedro is more like a long-term guest as I'm not quite sure what he does! Haha :) Just kidding Pedro!) The staff were are genuinely nice people who were always happy to help and I'd love to go back there again!! Perfect relaxation with a party just around the corner if you like that kinda thing! Thank you to you all for a fantastic holiday in luxurious bliss at the end of a big long backpacking budget trip!

Upon arrival at Coral Rock we knew this was exactly the place we were looking for...We were astounded by the beautiful oceans and beaches and the majestic view from the infinity pool onto the ocean. Upon arrival by very friendly staff, with other staff also assisting in making you feel right at home.

Being a honeymoon couple we were placed in the most private room, which was perfect for us. The rooms have all the necessary amenities that you may require - airconditioner, television etc. I was impressed with the overall cleanliness and service of the cleaners, it definately exceeded expectations!

Neil and Gillian were great hosts, often hanging out with the guests - we even ended up with a free bottle of champagne thanks to Neil! The food in the restaurant was amazing - a really big variety of items on the menu which was delicious every time. We are quite picky eaters, but we were highly impressed every time! The food also did not take long at all as many other reviewers have noted, which really deserves a compliment!

Overall I have to say that based on value for money, the resort really exceeded my expectations! I always like to provide some kind of feedback to try to help you guys to improve, but honestly it is the perfect Zanzibar resort. Thanks so much to Neil and Gillian, you made our stay something we will always cherish.
