Blue Oyster was the first and the cheapest place we stayed in Zanzibar an therefore our expectations were measured. They needn't have been!!!! The blue oyster exceeded all expectations the food, the service, the room the location, were all AMAZING. Can't reccommend highly eneough. Management were friendly and knowledgeable. Would go back in a heartbeat.

The Blue Oyster is a very nice hotel in the very isolated
hamlet of Jambiani. The room was great, the beach terrific, and the
hotel excellent in ambiance. The food took quite a while to come to the
table, but was very good. All in all, a very nice place for a very good price.
The only caution I would have is for people who stay at the Blue Oyster
to bring euros to pay for their room bill. The hotel bill is in euros, and the
hotel conversion rate for us was $1.50 USD for a euro (while the int'l rate
was $1.26 during our stay). They also charge 7.5% service charge to use a credit card. Also advised is to pay for all food and drink with Tanzanian Shillings you bring with you, as they are converted to euros on your final bill at 1350 to the U.S. dollar and 1700 to a euro (food and drink prices are in TZ shillings, and are converted to euros on your bill if you charge them to your room at the above rates for your final bill).
Great place to stay, but bring euros unless you want to be hit with a stiff currency exchange penalty when you check out (if you have to pay with a credit card, U.S. dollars, or Tanzanian Shillings).

They offer a couple of small bungalows. We had a ground-floor room with sea view and terrace. The room was big, furnished with dark wood typicall for Zanzibar, four poster bed, nice bathroom with good shower. The last two days we moved to a garden room with no view. That was of course not comparable, but the room was still nice!
They offer beach beds with cussions, umbrellas and also a hammock and a garden swing. We enjoyed our stay very much.
The restaurant was the best and we tried a lot. It might have taken some time until food was served, but it's Africa and we were on vacation.
The hotel is administrated by a german and I think that's a big advantage regarding cleanliness.

Lonley Planet billed this hotel as basic and clean...and that is what we got. The rooms are nice enough. The food and drinks are good though they take a long time. Service was friendly from the German staff.

The beach was beautiful though I was disappointed by the number of people selling things that tended to bother guests or small kids asking for food. Also, in May, the tide went out VERY far making it hard to swim for much of the day.

We visited the Blue Oyster at the end of our first trip to Africa. We spent 4 nights and had a great time. The place is small and in a beautiful setting. Lots of flowers, palm trees and tropical birds. We had an oceanview room, upstairs. This is a must if you are going to stay there. The Indian Ocean makes a fabulous front yard! During our stay electricity was out to the entire island due to a sub station fire. This meant no fan at night, so it was a little stuffy, but they ran on generator so there was no problem with meals, showers and the like. The staff was great, very accommodating and helpful. The place was SPOTLESS everywhere on the property. Definitely book the airport transfer; not that much and very convenient. Tipping is not a problem. There is a box in the dining area to put your tips and it is divided equally among staff, so no need to carry a lot of cash. Definitely take the dolphin snorkeling on the south side of the island. It is early in the day, but well worth it. The beach at the hotel was great, uncrowded. Tide does go way out, but by late morning it comes in. Do watch out for sea urchins. The locals work along the beach, so you'll get a lot of local flavor. A few people selling goods, but they don't nag you. Would definitely go back. If you're looking for 5 star and frills, don't come. If you're looking for relaxation and a friendly laid back atmosphere, come.

We went to Zanzibar as a break from our jobs in nearby Rwanda. We originally planned to stay 2 nights at Blue Oyster, then increased to 3, then cancelled our fancy resort we had saved money for and stayed for 5 nights! The staff were amazing, the breakfast (included) was great, and food at dinner was awesome (the sizzling fish!). It was low season so the hotel wasn't busy and they kindly upgraded us to another room that didn't have a shared bathroom. Some people have complained that there is seaweed on the beach at Jambiani, but it is still possible to swim, and you can easily rent bicycles from the hotel and bike to nearby beaches like Paje, which have great swimming but are over-run with big/ugly hotels. We can't wait to go back. Amazing, amazing.

We were on a backpacking budget so normally this place would have been just a bit too expensive for us, were it not for the guy answering our email enquiry, who was so helpful to point out that they have one room that is not ensuite - the bathroom, although private, is on the corridor round the corner - and therefore costs less. In this way we could afford to stay here a few nights at the end of quite a rough Africa trip, and we loved it.

From Stone Town it was easy to reach this place by the common and cheap backpacker mini-buses that drop you off at the door. The room was spotless (but hey, the place is German-run) and nicely furnished. The upstairs restaurant is nice and airy (sea breeze), the food is ok, not the best around, but there are plenty of other places in the neighbourhood to go to (we especially liked the one right next door).

The beach isn't the best for swimming because of the seaweed plantations but this applies to all of Jambiani wherever you go. What we really liked about Blue Oyster was the efficient and always friendly service, with eye for detail: we even got a Christmas card from them!
