Reviewed 15 January 2011

We had five days in Mbuyuni Beach Hotel, but it turned out to be a bad choice.

The beds had fleas, there was no hot water, and the Service from some of the staff was bad. Especially the manager, who kept rising the value of shillings, compared to dollars. He also tried to make us pay for six nights instead of five.

The food is not very good, but ten minutes away there are nice restaurants with good food.
All in all we are not going back.

Thanks for you for having taken your time in order to share your experience at Mbuyuni beach village.
Be assured your comments were taken into consideration.
Is always better when the future travelers get to hear both sides of the story.
The above guests stayed with us for 5 nights and after 1 night raised an issue of having flies in their room then immediately we sent our cleaning ladies team to do the cleaning but in our surprise They did not allow our cleaning team to do the cleaning to their room every morning as we always do, and in tropical place like Zanzibar the room has to be cleaned every day in order to sweep away dust and any insects, the same guests did not us to change their bed clothes for their entire 5 nights stay, so on this issue there was not much we could do regarding the cleaning as they were our paid customers we had to respect their wish.
during their stay we had power cut in Zanzibar on/Off on several times so this caused us to have shortage of hot water but was only for some time not as they mentioned that for the all their stay.
On their last day when they were supposed to pay us for the 5 nights stay ,they requested to us for the discount for what they had to pay us which of course we refused to give them any discount so We all know very well that from this point then the guest became very angry and even told our manager that they are going to write bad review for our place.
but to fair on our place , how on earth someone expect to negotiate the discount after spending 5 nights at our hotel without raising any of above negative issue while staying here.
To be honesty is quiet strange when all others hotels next to us were empty and is not like they paid us in advance for their stay and they were free to check out all time but they never did, instead they finished their entire 5 nights staying at our place, how can someone who was not enjoying their stay decide to stick around for that long? 5 nights?
We would strong advise them is better to negotiate for a discount before making commitment of taking room instead of waiting on the last day on check out time!

Picturesque place, nothing more. Dirty, badly-organized hotel with rude and unhelpful staff.
No cocktails in the bar. Wine is awfully acid, but when we came with our own wine they gave us old dirty table-glass.
If you’re late for 5 minutes, be sure they won’t serve you breakfast, even juice or fruits.
Their food is doubtful. After lunch there, I suddenly felt bad. Two days in fever, muscles and stomach aching I thought it was malaria. There wasn’t thermometer on the reception. When I decided to visit a doctor, they didn’t even have the doctor’s tel. number so we just wasted time going to the nearest hospital in Jambiani, as it turned closed. Mbuyuni arranged a taxi to Stone town and one of the managers even made a trip to Stone town at our account, pretending to take care! Top of hypocrisy!
In reality, it wasn’t malaria, it was deep poisoning. I can’t tell for sure whether I was poisoned there but likely I was.

Thanks very much for your review and comment regarding our place mbuyuni beach village,
We well know that we can not always please all our guests but is something that We do try our best to improve .
We would just like to clarify some negative points that have been raised by guests,
Firstly regarding the breakfast time is 07:30 am- 10:00 am, so when the guests turn up after 10:00 am is obvious that we are not going to be able to provide the fully breakfast as it is supposed as at this time the same waiters who was in charge for this they would have already been doing some other duties around the restaurant, i am sure this does apply to any others hotels around the world, the guests were always turning up just before 11:00 am for breakfast!
Regarding the sickness ,yes we do admit We do not have a thermometres for checking the Temperature but the best solution when someone is not well is taking them to the Hospital which We did immediately the guests mentioned that they were not feel well, we rented the car for them to see Doctors in Town ,but suprisingly the guests still did not appreciate all of this!
We also want to clarify the food poison case that they raised , how can they be sure that this happened at our place while during their 6 nights here they were always eating some nearby restaurants, at the same time during their stay we had over 20 guests eating at our restaurant regularly without any complains from others!
We are sorry that you experinced our place in such bad way but We strongly believe that far too many of our guests are not bothered to read the clear and full information of our place before
making the booking with us which is not always good thing for them and for us!
Many thanks!

I stayed to Mbuyuni lodge with my wife and our two chidren over X-mass time, The hotel is fairly small but ( is beautiful small place) - We enjoyed the relaxition atmosphere and a beautiful beach, the 2 rooms we took were well- cleaned with a big Zanzibar beds, the food at the restaurant was generally good eventhough the menus was somewhat limited, The tides tend to go out a long way for sometime but their small swimming pool is great place is good place to hang around especial with the kids. The manager Shehe was friendly and helpful.
We really recommend this beautiful small place!

..but with a new swimmingpool. No shower at the pool and repeating problems with water in the room. Helpful staff. Breafast was ok, but dinner was not good as the meet was unchewable. Expensive food compared to quality. Several possibilities to have lunch around the other nearby hotels. Taxi from the airport should cost 30USD and not 50! A low budget but nice hotel. We liked it anyway and the hotel is still under construction!

We were there for a week, and we really enjoyed the stay. The rooms are basic but very clean. We were moved to a different room after two days, and I can assure you it is best to have a room near the beach. They are much cooler at night, and the rooms only have fans.

The restaurant is very good, and you can safely have all your dinners there. Very reasonable prices on food and drink. For lunch I would recommend that you go to one of the restaurants along the beach, as there are many walking towards Jambiani village.

The beach directly in front of the hotel has many sea urchins, so remember to bring your aqua shoes. If you walk five minutes, you can enter the sea where there are no urchins. We brought our own drive masks and snorkels, and it was great. You can snorkel in the shallow water and you see tons of tropical fish.

The staff is great and very friendly. They can arrange almost anything for you. Just remember that the service is slow everywhere. They call it 'polepole', and it is part of the culture. if you relax and adapt to it, you will have a great time.

It is a great location to spend your vacations in zanzibar if you look for tranquil, calm and relaxing place. The price is ok, the staff is friendly and will familiarize with you quickly. The place is located near Jambiani and Paje, you can walk to Paje along the beach in 30 minutes and it is really worthy!
We will never forget the experience and the welcoming atmosphere we found. You will feel immediately at home and will only regret to leave it!
We have loved it!

After climbing Kilimjaro I was looking forward to relaxing in a nice placez, with a great beach. I knew it wasn't five stars, but I did not imagine something so deserted and nothing like the pictures.

When we came at night the first thing we saw was a building site and a mess. Then we went to the rooms/huts, byt is was really difficult to find, course there was no light to show where we were walking. Later in the evening, when we were walking to our hut from the restaurant, we literally fell over som men, who were sleeping on the pathway. I got so scared I was shaking. I was the night watch - sleeping on the pathway.

There is a small "resturant". The food was okay, but service wasnt good. They toke forever to bring what we ordered, and when the bill came, it was all wrong.

I was not impressed at all with the beach. Walking 30 min. north there were good beaches, but not around the hotel.

If you are allright with a place, that is totally deserted, basic room and scuffy areas - It is okay for the price. But, no, I will not recommend it.
