“Excellent value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2011

I recently read a poor review in respect of La Goa Azul. My wife and I have stayed there eight or nine times and the review shocked us. We have just returned from a months stay and the following is what we think of the hotel.

The welcome is always friendly and the staff do all they can to put you at ease and assist in anyway they can. The rooms are more than adequate and clean. The housekeeping staff work hard to ensure guests feel confident in the knowldege that any diificulties will be addressed speedily, The hotel management exert a positve influence over staff in ensuring guests are content with the efforts of all staff.

The restaurant is overseen by Prim, the food is excellent and always good value. The breakfasts are more than adequate and always contain extras for the guests. We have never been disappointed with the restaurant.

The pools are well maintained and safe to use. Maintenance is carried out to a high standard. Reception staff are always helpful and can coverse perfectly in English and other langauges,

There are two on site retails shops, an excellent tailors and Imi who is the on site jeweller, trustworthy and reliable. A true diamond himself!

The surrounding area is interesting, accessible and diverse with numerous restaurants, bars and other places of interest.

If you are due to visit La Goa Azul, relax, you will enjoy the exoperince. If you are still deciding where to stay try it and be more than surprised with the welcome you experience and the enjoyment you have.

This was one of Thomas Cook's cheaper options for the dates we wanted to travel. Some of the reviews are unfair as we found that the towels most days appeared to be brand new and the bed sheets and covers were brilliant white and good quality (maybe it was because we tipped the room boys on several occasions during our stay) The staff were really friendly and helpful. Initially we thought some of the bathroom tiles were dirty but on closer inspection it was just some paint / varnish which had dried. The room and balcony was spacious, lashings of hot water during the day and a quick to heat water heater for night time showers. We ate in restaurant several times, we had free dinner vouchers, which we could use on a selected menu. We tried several other restaurants nearby and in Calangute which were all excellent. The surrounding area is green and lush but a breeding ground for biting insects so repellent is needed both day and night on exposed skin. Buy repellent from local shops as Repel 100% deet, boots tropical 50% deet and Johnson's herbal repellent were all useless. We took taxis to various nearby beaches and found some nice quiet places to relax. The night markets were worth going to early in the evening for bargain prices. The Spice Plantation trip booked with a taxi driver was interesting and the scenery was beautiful. There is a water park being built, a short drive away, which should be open by 2012. There are many people who return each year to this hotel, some own or rent apartments for the whole season and they can give you lots of advice on places to visit, shop, eat . The hotel had lots of empty rooms so it was quiet at night and there were enough sun loungers. We stayed in Santa Monica Hotel, Calangute a few years ago and the prices are comparable but Lagoa Azul was better rooms bigger and better facilities. India has so many other nice areas to explore so if you have been to Goa before try somewhere else i.e Fort Cochin in Kerela.

The Lago Azul was my first trip to Goa and my second time in India. Previously i had travelled around north India so i knew not to expect the standards from a 3* we would expect here in the uk. I would prefer more luxury but i guess most people go with what the pocket can afford . £1400 for two weeks was pretty good i thought and thomas cook threw in dinner vouchers for six nights which we received when arriving at the hotel. The room was satisfactory and the bathroom just about adequate. The swimming pool area was great at both pools . Beautiful maintained grounds and gardens and the bedrooms are cleaned daily if required. I personally found the restaurant quite good but a little boring so spread the vouchers out if you get them . The taxis outside the hotel were helpful and we used them once or twice and they also arranged a moped for us which was very cheap @ about £3 a day. Great location and the staff at reception were ok but not as friendly as those in the restaurant.Gym was ok but no where near the sort of gym we would expect here.

Dont expect to much and you will have a wonderful time.

The hotel is in a lovely, quiet location a few minutes walk from Arpora where there are several bars and restaurants and a short taxi drive from the larger and livelier beachside town, Baga. In our experience all the hotel staff, Security, Restaurant, Domestic etc, are polite, gracious and ever so friendly. Nothing is ever too much trouble.

The room we had was simple and basic as we expected from a 3* hotel in India, but cleaned daily to a high standard with a well stocked and low priced minibar. Bathroom and poolside towels were provided daily which I would agree were not new, but they were certainly not threadbare and they were very clean. The shower in the room was clean and powerful, but just a little old fashioned. The airconditioning unit was ancient and noisy, but there was also a fan which on a low setting overnight was quiet and kept the room cool. Air conditioning really wasn't required overnight.

The hotel breakfast is more than adequate. Cereal, fruit and toast with a choice of jams alongside eggs, cooked however you want them and a selection of more traditional Indian breakfast foods, Upma being one of my favourites. You can have other cooked items, bacon & sausages etc, but they are at an extra and slightly steep cost, but do you really go al that way to India to have full English every day?

In the evening the hotel restaurant serves, likes most of the local restaurants, a huge selection of Goan and Indian dishes along with Chinese, Italian and Continental meals. There is often a buffet which is well worth investigating but you'd do well not to neglect the other local restaurants as they are worth checking out, particularly All Spice (amazing food) and Spice Oven (not as spectacular on the food front, but a great bar area and excellent staff).

The hotel has two pools which are well maintained by a pool boy, one of which has a dedicated poolside bar offering drinks and a variety of snacks all day at the usual cheap Indian prices, although drinks and snacks will be delivered to the other pool by ordering at the restaurant.

The hotel provides a 6x daily free bus shuttle into Baga, although we found it was best to do as we were told and get picked up at the time the elderly driver decided (he was very keen on 5 O’clock). Still, he never once let us down!

Overall, the Lagoa Azul exceeded our expectations and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. We can recommend it most highly.

Recently stayed here 8/1/2011 to 23/1/11.
Rooms very basic but clean. Not that impressed when we arrived but it grew on us.
Staff were friendly and polite.
Nice restaurant, good food, breakfast however needs improving.
They offer eggs (omelette, fried eggs, scrambled), indian food, grilled tomatoes, cornflakes, 2 varieties of fruit, toast, fruit juices, tea, coffee. You could pay extra for sausage, bacon, beans, pancakes, french toast, porridge.
The pool is clean, needs more sunbeds and thicker mattresses would be nice. Pool towels are provided.
WIFI wasn't working. Good library selection. Easy 5 minute walk into Arpora.
Entertainment offered twice a week, a duo and one man band, not that good - but that's Goa!

It was very terrible stay at there with very bad service. They even don't care to give the service, as they get the advance payment. Room service & cleaning were worst. Mosquitoes and bad environment of room was there.
