“Great Place to Chill and getaway from it all”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

My wife and I just spent 2 weeks at this great place. We had our own 2 story cabin with our own patio complete with hammock and table. Since my wife and I had a working vacation we needed a place that was quiet and relaxed where we could work but still be pool side or take a dip in the ocean, Hotel Celaje was the perfect place!!!

With your own fridge and the town of Cabuya close by we could by a few things on hand to have our own meals if we wished, which was a great added benefit. And since you feel like you have your own spacious "house" it is so easy to settle in and make it home! Well, a home where you have a housekeeper every day, and can eat some great meals at the restaurant. I Marco and Carola were great hosts and we really got to know them over the time we were there. They acted like we were house guests not hotel guests and we really appreciated that!!

Please check this place out if you are in the area!!

David

We stayed for 4 nights and would like to have stayed longer. Marco and Carola did not treat us like hotel guests but like house guests. Nothing was to much trouble for them. the location is ideal and the pool very clean. If you are thinking about staying don't squeeze your time here take extra time to really enjoy their hospitality. You'll entertained also by the cute jack russell dog playing with his ball in the pool. We saw plenty of wildlife without leaving the property. White faced monkeys, iguanas, squirrel and many birds. Hopefully we will make it back again one day.

My family and I had the opportunity to stay at Hotel Celaje for 3 nights in December. What a wonderful hotel. From the large clean rooms, the fantastic meals that Carola had cooked for breakfast and dinner, to the amazing location (some of the best tide pooling was a short walk down the beach), Marco & Carola (the owners) had created such a wonderful hotel. Marco & Carola had made sure that our stay at the hotel was wonderful and if we ever had a problem they were prompt in resolving any issues. In addition, they had gone out of there way to make our stay in Cabuya was amazing. After visiting Montezuma and Malpais for day trips, it was so wonderful to return back to Hotel Celaje. If you are looking for an amazing small hotel that creates a very laid back and relaxing atmosphere this is place to stay. We look forward to staying at this hotel when we return back to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Select a room not near the road. At night there are sometimes loud vehicles that come down the road...

Hotel Celaje, located near Cabuya (some 7kms from Montezuma) and run by new owners/mgt Marco & Carola (both Dutch), is beautifully situated around a pool in a well-kept lush garden at the beach. It's a quiet, peaceful place with the sound of birds and surf omnipresent. We stayed for four nights and can highly recommend this place. The A-shaped cabanas are beautifully made of non-commercial local hard-woods and were large enough to sleep our family of five comfortably. You sleep on the first floor (in the "-" of the "A"). Beds/mattresses are great - we all slept very well. All cabanas have there own porch at ground floor level with a (too) comfortable hammock and some tables/chairs. Canopy provides natural shading and through the garden you can see (and hear) the beach some 50-100yrds away. A small, functional bathroom is located on the ground floor. Rooms are kept very tidy. We found the price reasonable. Marco & Carola are very friendly and accommodating hosts. They did/do a superb job!

Despite being 'off the beaten track' there is plenty to do to keep you busy for days - if not weeks: We rode horses to a beautiful waterfall that ends in the sea. Ask for 'Marvin'. He takes great care of you and his horses; Ziplining gave us a bird's eye view of the canopy and the amazing Montezuma Falls (take swimming gear with you); Nearby (2kms) Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve allows for an intimate encounter with dense jungle and its inhabitants (we saw 'pisotes' - kind of a larger cousin of the raccoon but not quite so, howler monkeys, morpho butterflies, large 'tree chickens' - iguanas actually, and different species of birds); We drove to Mal Pais via a spectacular seasonal road (7kms). The road cut so deep into a steep valley that 'navistar' regularly lost contact with the GPS satellites. We past (but did not notice) the entrance to Mel Gibson's $40mln retreat. Allegedly, he drops by once in a while and you might spot him in Montezuma or Santa Theresa; The coastline is spectacular with beaches alternating rocky patches. The breaking surf on various beaches nearby proved challenging to our 12-yr old but more experienced surfers put on a great show; At low tide we walked to and around the 'graveyard' island (do check its history) across from the hotel and found all sorts of interesting stuff on the beach (incl. dolphin bones); Montezuma is a neat little town with 'old' and new hippies abound; We missed the New Year's Eve Party at Santa Theresa - but if you're into this scene, this is apparently the place to go; Many tourists rent quad-bikes to explore the surroundings (we didn't as we had a 4x4 at our disposal); There are many other activities that we did not explore, incl. snorkeling and dolphin-watching or fishing boat trips. Marco was very helpful and effective in arranging a number of these trips. He's been on most of them himself and has some some good tips and extensive knowledge of the region and its history.

Now you can of course also decide to stay in Cabuya and just chill out on the porch of your cabin, at the pool, the campfire or beach and muse about your hard life. Carola is a great chef bringing you a selection of quality and healthy food options, often using local products. There are also some nice options for children too (we went with a 12, 11 and 7-yrs old). She does great fish - very fresh. Do try the 'special plate' (very nice 'lomito'/meat) and 'Escargots à la Marco'. If you're lucky enough to stay for Christmas (as we were) we recommend the 7-course dinner. The Sunday afternoon jam sessions around the pool have become a local highlight, attracting (would be) musicians from, Cabuya, Montezuma and Santa Theresa, providing great atmosphere and nice music. Everyone can chip in, so bring your instrument/voice.

Frits & Monique - Houston, TX.

Room Tip: Really any will do.

This is a very relaxing, clean and peaceful place off the well beaten Costa Rican path. Marcos and Karola are great hosts and will accomodate in every way. They're working hard on making this an even more beautiful spot than it ever was.

Celaje is a great hotel. Luxery private cabins, swimming pool and a great beach for hours of walking.
The Dutch (almost) owners are friendly and will supply you with everything you wish for. The restaurant is very good, but a bit steep. You can eat among the Tico's in nearby Cabuya town for a very decent price. This hotel is one of the best ways to escape the masses at Montezuma.

Our family of 4 (kids 11 and 12) stayed at Hotel Celaje for 10 days at the beginning of July. Marco and Carole were very kind, accomodating and relaxed hosts. The bungalows were spacious with comfortable beds. The grounds were nicely kept. The pool was big, lovely and clean. The restaurant was great and Carole was an excellent chef! Oh - and we saw monkeys every day!
I actually have very few negative comments...
There could have been a little bit more variety in the breakfast... (we did stay for 10 days)
Our A-frame could have had a few more hooks... (we do travel with a lot of stuff)
We appreciated that the hotel was NOT in Montezuma. We were happy to know that there was a tourist 'hub' nearby, but Cabuya is much quieter than Montezuma - and with our kids in tow, that was very important to us.
The beach at the hotel is not really swimmable, but we had fun snorkling in the tide pools by Cabuya Island at low tide. Also, the nearby river was lots of fun to explore with occasional deep pools and small rapids.
Many of the A-frames at Celaje are right beside the road - but, especially in the rainy season, the road is not very busy.
Some tourists might prefer air conditioning in the rooms. It was hot and humid in July, but we were okay without it.
Some guests at this hotel would feel isolated without a car, but we often took the local bus into Montezuma, or Marco would drive us in for a reasonable fee. As well, we rented ATV's for a couple of fun-filled and adventurous days. That got us over to the amazing surf beaches of Mal Pais.
While in the area, we did the Montezuma River Zipline Canopy Tour, which included a swim in the waterfalls. That was exciting, but don't expect to see any wildlife - you zip quickly and noisily! Marco arranged a horseback riding tour with a local guide. The horses were obviously well cared for. We visited Cabo Blanco Reserve. It was a lovely walk! We also visited the Rainsong Animal Sanctuary in Cabuya. Go after having been in Costa Rica for a minimum of 6 days and don't wear bug spray or sunscreen. Then you can get up close and personal with the injured and orphaned animals. We weren't too impressed with the owner of this establishment but the volunteers were lovely people! In Montezuma we visited the Butterfly Gardens. Our guide was extremely knowledgable! As well, we went on the Tortuga Island Snorkling trip. I actually can't recommend this trip. As we were there in the rainy season, the water was not very clear for snorkling. And, we were all stung by jellyfish - nothing serious, but enough that they cancelled the afternoon snorkle! But even in the high season, you can see that Tortuga Island would be overrun with tourists. And everything costs extra money... $1 to use the awful toilet... It even costs extra to walk beyond the beach! We chose to visit this part of Costa Rica to get away from all that!
Much of this 'extra info' has nothing to do with Hotel Celaje - the important thing I am trying to convey is that in 10 days, we never ran out of things to do! It was a great family vacation!
