We stayed at Las Terrazas in December of 2013 with our two young children and our friends who also had two young children.
We had a great time here! The location has a spectacular view of the Pacific and every sunset is rewarding! The property is multi-level with some well kept gardens and some areas that are more wild - and so attracts amazing wildlife - we saw capuchin monkeys, Toucans, many hummingbirds among other things. The hosts were excellent and went out of their way to help us on more than one occasion!
We can't wait to return!

The road was so steep and with only large rocks that slipped under the tires, we ended up almost over the mountain, only a tree stopped us from going over. Sustained $500 in damages to my car!!!!! We have a Pioneer 4x4!!!!! I was born in Costa Rica and have been on many back roads .... Nothing like that.

We stayed here for two nights and wished that we stayed longer. We just drove up without reservation and luckily they had a vacancy. We were greeted by Lilliana as we drove up and she gave us a warm welcome. At first we were just going to stay for one night but we loved it so much that we decided to stay another night.
The bungalow is well built and tastefully furnished and very clean. The kitchenette comes handy for making simple meals.
The pool is perfect for cooling off, surroundings is lush, very friendly staff. We had an awesome stay.

They have only 3 bungalows; it makes you feel been in a place just for you. The views are spectacular because you are in the top of a mountain. The beds, bath and other facilities are excellent. You can have a pool for your own. Excellent service and delicious breakfast. Near all you want: restaurants, supermarkets, beaches, the whale tale.

Room Tip: All of them have great views

We read some of the bad critiques about Terrazas de Ballena here (as we always do to sniff out the reality of a place) and I think it's worth debunking some of it:

1) The road up the hill is NOTHING. I don't know what the people who had trouble getting up there were driving and who they were. But any average 4x4 will make it up there even in pouring rain. It's not an issue whatsoever (maybe if you're from Florida and never left your state, you'll find it challenging, but it's in your head, and not the reality)

2) Correct, the owners aren't present, and neither is the person, Helen Aguero, who's managing the place. But who cares? The person who's present is Liliana and she's AWESOME, as Marcos (I think) who's the security/night guard. The place has 3 rooms, so I don't know how many people one would expect to be on site.

3) As mentioned, the place has 3 rooms (casitas), and they are very, very nice. Especially for a hundred bucks a night. And the entire place is gorgeous, they used very nice wood for the pool deck, the pool is very nice with a little fake waterfall thing (that actually doesn't look kitschy). And the casitas are spacious (comfortably sleeps a family of 4 like us) with really nicely designed updated bathrooms. Even that outdoor kitchen is great and I don't know where the people who complained about it being in bad shape stayed but it must not have been here because it is in very decent shape (not that we needed it but I can see how it comes in handy in this place). The views aren't as breathtaking as from, say, the Whales and Dolphins hilltop but they are still great as you do see the ocean framed by vegetation and you do get a very nice sunset (the casita that is father from the parking area has a slightly nicer view in our opinion as it is completely unobstructed from your daybed; we stayed in the one nearer to the parking area; still a nice view but some trees in the middle; no complaint at all, just giving you the info; the third casita is further up the hill, you walk up a staircase, don't know if the view is even nicer from there but we think it's also a little bigger than the two casitas downstairs)

4) As for breakfast, Liliana makes it and yes, it normally consists of fruit and coffee but she went out and bought bread, bagels, cream cheese and some sort of Costa Rican donuts, and then asked if we wanted anything else for the next day. So I guess to the folks who complained here about the "can't survive on fruit for breakfast only" situation: all you had to do was ask! And we didn't even ask, Liliana went out of her way to buy this stuff when she saw our somewhat sad faces at the mentioning of the "fruit only" situation.

5) Yes, plenty of wild life here as you are in the jungle, so to those who complained about bugs or ants or whatever: just stay out of Costa Rica and go spend your holiday at the Best Western Fort Lauderdale!

6) The place is terrific for some quiet time and as a base for exploring the area, doing the whale watching tour, etc. Do note however that because of how it's arranged, it's not like you'd have a lot of "safe" privacy for "couple stuff" in the casita near the parking area because the casita that's farther is accessed by walking past your deck and Liliana is always busy working on something in the area so if you have the window shutters open, chances are you'll be seen. It didn't concern us at all as a family of four but I guess it's fair to mention it as a warning to all you couples out there looking for romance lol

7) We went and checked out Whales and Dolphins. The views are absolutely stunning as it's on a hilltop. The restaurant is also very good (we had lunch there) and the staff we met during lunch were incredibly nice and welcoming. The rooms however are very small (about half the size of the casitas at Terrazas de Ballena) and the structure that has the rooms (which is separate from the main pool/restaurant area) looks a little like a US housing project and the stairs/railings are steep and dangerous for young children. Also not a fan of the overall mud-yellow paint of the place. We wouldn't stay there but the restaurant is totally worth a visit, especially for lunch with that ridiculous view

8) We also went and checked out Rancho Pacifico on the chance to have dinner there. Turned out that they usually only serve the people who stay there (although I guess if you call in advance, who knows) and their pool was emptied out for renovation (supposed to be done 4-5 weeks from now) plus they were closing for 2 weeks as of today (7 Oct 2013). None of that is supposed to be critical, just facts. The place (bar, restaurant, pool, lounge) looks absolutely gorgeous. I don't know if it's worth the reported $400-500+/night when you can find amazing stuff right on the beach in Costa Rica for that kind of money but I guess that's a personal preference. It's the kind of place that's makes you want to organize a big birthday with your 24 best friends (they have 11 rooms) over a long weekend. And you'll mostly be up there because the drive up the hill, in this case, IS pretty long and steep.

Hope this helps!

We had a bit mixed feelings about Las Terrazas de Ballena because we expected it to be a bit more luxurious. We had the feeling that this place is a little bit outdated and needs some improvements.

What we liked:
The position is secluded and full of flowers (steep way up with a 4x4, the last meters were even hard for our 4x4 !)
The terrace of the bungalow is large with comfy daybeds. Nice small pool (a bit cold because it is situated in the shade).
Airco.

What was a bit disappointing:
The breakfast consists of: fruit, coffee, no fresh orange juice and a small piece of bread with an even smaller portion of jam. This can be certainly improved (to be honest, the price for breakfast is also rather low, maybe it would be a better idea to rise the price and enlarge the breakfast) !
The outdoor kitchen is not very clean. No towels to dry the kitchen stuff, plastic glasses. In our opinion this is not a kitchen that you can use regularly.
The view is nice but not so overwhelming as we had expected. We didn't see tucans or monkeys around (but nature can be unpredictable).
Only two daybeds close to the swimming pool (although the bungalows are close to the swimming pool).
The room is large and clean enough but needs some refreshment in our opinion.

All in all we enjoyed our stay (the bungalows have a 'typical Costa Rican atmosphere) but the poor breakfast and the 'not so clean' outdoor kitchen was a disappointment.

Room Tip: Our bungalow was the closest to the swimming pool but had the disadvantage that this bungalow was su...

Thank you for your concerns. We are currently addressing them.

1) We understand that our breakfasts need improvement. We now are getting baked goods for breakfast from a local bakery. We now offer a substantial continental breakfast. We are also giving guests choices which could include bagels with cream cheese, croissants, pastries, or breakfast sandwiches. All breakfasts also include fresh fruit and coffee.
2) Thank you for your comments regarding the kitchenette area. We are sorry that the kitchenette was not up to your expectations and we have brought the issue up with our staff. We are working to insure that this issue does not present itself again for any of our guests.
3) We understand that we are short on daybeds in the pool area, and we are in the process of purchasing more of them.

Thank you again for bring your concerns to our attention. We work everyday to ensure that our guests have a memorable experience and we take all concerns seriously.

Beatiful bongalows with wonderful views!! Great accomodation, lovely and comfortable beds and baths..semi private pool (only 3 bungalows in the property).
Had the opportunity to make a nature walk up the property and see the complete whale tale in the oceanside. Fantastic place to regain energy; excellent service, healthy and fresh breakfast every morning. Kids friendly!! Helen recommended Exotica, a wonderfull restaurant that you must also check out!!

Room Tip: Every bungalow is equipped and has a private deck; any option will work out great
