“Hot, Hot, Hot!!”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

The room was clean & had a wonderful balcony with a great view. Unfortunately, even the a/c couldn't keep up with the heat. Had to have it on constantly and it was still too warm for comfort. We stayed 2 nights and on the 2nd day we did not receive clean towels or more soap. I wouldn't recommend staying in this second story room mainly because of the heat factor.

Room Tip: try one of the rooms on ground level, but I would still make sure it had a/c.

We had tried to book with another place but never did hear back so we took a chance and drove to Uvita. We checked around and some places were way out of our budget. Someone mentioned Big Bamboo so we checked in. Lupe was great and helpful. The rooms are spartan but immaculate and the price was great. We stayed for 3nights and Lupes breakfasts were yummy. If you want a no frills place try this one.

As soon as we arrived at the Big Bamboo, we felt like family visiting from out of town. Chad and Pookie (friendly resident dog) greeted us and showed us to our room. Our 4 year old daughter became instant friends with Lupe's son, who is 6 years old. They played together during our entire stay (despite the language barrier), and he was quite the gracious host. Lupe spoiled our daughter with intermittent slices of cake and small ice cream cones. Needless to say, our daughter loved Lupe :)

Our room was spotless, with a full-sized bed and a set of bunk beds. There were shelves in the room to store our belongings. We had a small TV and air conditioning.

We dined at the hotel restaurant several times during our stay in addition to the included breakfasts. Lupe is an awesome chef. I had her fish dinner three times. Try the fish, you won't be disappointed. The breakfasts were also wonderful, fresh, and expertly prepared.

Chad was very helpful in identifying places where we could go during our four days in Uvita. We went to some awesome beaches and stunning waterfalls courtesy of his great directions and "treasure maps". Lupe gave us information about more formal tours- kayaking, snorkeling, horseback riding, etc. We just chose to drive around to some places on our own.

Uvita is a nice little town with many amenities. It is also not as "touristy" as other cities that we visited in CR. We really enjoyed walking to the center of town from Big Bamboo, and we easily found anything that we needed in Uvita. We received excellent directions from one of the hotel owners Denis, in order to arrive at the Big Bamboo by bus or car. The hotel is within walking distance of the TRACOPA and public bus stops.

If you are looking for a great little hotel, at a great price, fabulous food, and friendly staff- look no further than the Big Bamboo!

The noise from the highway is the opposite of what I wanted. Trash on the grounds. They charge for each cup of coffee. Poor security, door lock very flimsy, and unable to lock one of the windows. The balcony provides a view of more of the hotel rooms, and the laundry on the line. No wildlife. In a residential area, the house across the street has a huge pile of construction debris. not within walking distance of beach or anything else. Lots of roosters, and a dog scratching on the door for an early wake up. path to the room was a cramped path, i cant imagine what it would be like in the rain. Our double room had a double bed and 2 twins that took up most of the room

Thank you for your review. We value your feedback to help us improve our guests’ experience at Big Bamboo in Uvita.

Big Bamboo is just one of a myriad of accommodation styles available in Costa Rica. As opposed to the luxury boutique hotels that are also present in the area, we cater to travelers who are seeking an affordable authentic Costa Rican experience.
Much like an American B&B, Big Bamboo is run by a family who lives directly under the suite you stayed in. Lupe and her family insure that we have 24 hour security, delicious authentic “tico” cuisine and inexpensive laundry service. Like in many Costa Rican country dwellings, our neighbor’s roosters and “Pucky” our friendly guard dog do roam the property. We also have extra beds in the rooms because we allow up to four people in the rooms for the same low price. When you stay at Big Bamboo you become part of the family and you should not hesitate to ask that extra beds be removed or pets be restrained if you so desire.

We view our location as an asset. Although, we are technically located in the village of Uvita, we are situated on the corner of two quiet gravel roads, half a kilometer from the main road, surrounded by trees and just a short walk from the village center. In the morning, and at sunset, monkeys, sloths and toucans are sometimes visible. Our guests can mingle with the locals by taking a walk to Uvita’s great “soda” restaurants, play pool at Doña María’s, bathe in the local waterfall, participate in church service, watch a life soccer game or visit the flea market on Saturdays.

Danny, Lupe’s son in law, will give our guests a free ride to the three great beaches in the vicinity. The Parque Nacional Ballena, is just a 3 minute ride away. There, you can sunbathe, swim, surf and snorkel or sign up for adventure tours to go whale watching. We will even loan you a phone to arrange a quick pick-up when you are ready to return to the Big Bamboo. Six minutes away, is playa Hermosa. A perfect beach to surf, and watch the sunset (we will loan you a board) and twelve minutes away, is playa Ventanas, regarded as one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches in Costa Rica.

Again, we are sorry that your stay did not live up to your expectations. I have instructed our staff to make all necessary repairs and more importantly, to better convey to our guests that we will do anything within our means to make their stay truly unforgettable.
We would be honored if you would consider staying with us again in the near future and give us the opportunity to show you we have listened to your concerns.

Sincerely,

Chad S,
Owner of Big Bamboo de Uvita

The Big Bamboo has it all...a great central location to many attractions, clean rooms with great views and comfy beds. The air conditioner and hot showers are very welcoming after a day of touring. I must say the very best part of The Big Bamboo is Lupe's cooking. My 16 students and adult chaperone raved about the quality and variations of food that were provided. The laundry services really came in handy and it was such a blessing not to come home from vacation and do a bunch of laundry. Denis and Chad were relaxed and accommodating- my students are begging me to bring them back this coming summer. Never did we imagine that we would see a troop of monkeys eating the fresh fruit in the trees right outside our balcony. We can't wait to go back and experience Costa Rica again in Uvita at The Big Bamboo :)

Uvita was the highlight of our trip. We traveled with 3 teens who learned to Surf with the help of the big bamboo. Our next stop was Manuel Antonio and after one night there, everyone wanted to go back to Uvita and the big bamboo. Uvita is not a tourist town (yet) and that was so refreshing! We had a sloth and monkeys behind our room and that was so cool. The beaches are cleaner and much less crowded that MA. We also enjoyed all of our meals that Lupita served and we enjoyed being part of the local culture. Our group wanted fun, comfort and safety and we found it. There is so much to do in this part of Costa Rica. You can go surfing, whale watching, horseback riding, fishing, snorkeling, hiking to waterfalls, etc. This is a great spot for a large group. Thank you Big Bamboo and we can't wait to see you again!

Had a gr8 stay at Bamboo, the rooms were very clean and had good a/c.Lots of tasty well cooked food provided by Doña Lupita and her daughter, they went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible even playing with our baby boy whilst we ate! the surrounding area is beautiful with monkeys scooting around in the forest behind our room.A bonus was that we could take our 2 dogs who love their beach trips and is sometimes difficult to find a place that receives pets, they stayed outside the room and enjoyed their stay.We didnt make it to the waterfalls (next time) but made the most of visiting the national park and various beaches that are all nice in their own way.

Room Tip: we took the far room as not to bother other guests with our dogs but we had the place to ourselves a...
