“Great Place, but be aware”
Reviewed 21 September 2009

The rooms, the staff, the food, the site and the ambience all top notch. It truly is a paradise. A couple of inside tips though: 1. If you put your tip on the credit card, it will never make it to the employees as the owner pockets it (I find this very distasteful and dishonest) 2. They don't have trail maps because "people haven't returned them" (shows a distrust of the customers they serve) 3. Meals are for one hour at 7 a.m., noon and 6 - not much flexibility - but food is great 4. They have no essentials or conveniences to sell you if you need them, like flashlights etc...

Also, there is a room directly above the primary birding area designed for large groups. If you are unfortunate enough to book a trip when it is occupied, it is very noisy.

The chef is amazing and so are the rest of the staff. Just make sure to tip them directly - ends up costing more, but worth it. I would go back but extremely dissapointed in owner for not distributing tips. I heard this from multiple staff members and know it to be true.

Do go. Its great.

GlobalTico, Manager at La Cusinga Eco Lodge, responded to this review, 25 September 2009
I will like to take the time to reply to this review as it was a shocking review to me. A good rating, but the comments made me investigate what were the facts about these events. We take all reviews seriously and more so when a client goes away with a bad impression from our place. We have been in business for 15 years or so, during this time we have but a lot of effort in our community and part of that effort is our team members. We invest a great deal of our income in providing for our people, we have free housing, a full kitchen area for them, free laundry area, free water and electricity, also we have them fully covered for the social benefits and all of them have a working policy in case of any accident. We give them loans with no interest, pay for continues education programs, training classes, among many other benefits. So it is hard to understand why they told you such lies. I spoke to them to find out what happen and yesterday we had a meeting.

The result: As it turn out our coordinator did told you that it was better that they get the tips in cash, and that they preferred that it would not be put in the credit card. The justification that she gave me was that they prefer to have the cash right away, and with a credit card they need it to wait for the bank to credit us and in also they take a % for the fee. One thing that I now that is a fact is that we (management and the owners) has nothing to do in the Tips process, as we had delegated that job to our coordinator, but as a result of this negative image that was given to our hotel from the miscommunication we are now going to put a process in where a box with a lock will be in the reception area, any tips will be asked to be put in an envelope and to be drop in the box, the key will be in my office (one hour away from the hotel), and at the monthly general meeting the coordinator will bring the box to the meeting and I will bring the key… the tips will be counted and divided equally between all team members.

Regarding the others points: We have large maps in the entrance of each trail, a general large map of all the trails in the reception area… we do not print small maps as to safe paper and contribute to the efforts of reduction of tree cutting. Meals have been always family style and have been our traditions, here we just ask our visitors to be a bit flexible and be part of our traditions. Regarding the essential, we are in the low season and having flashlights in the store (as we told you) has only lead to the corrosion of the batteries and the flashlight it self. Regarding medical items we also informed you that our insurance agent asked us that we do not carry any, as we where not a pharmacy (we also offered to drive you, for free, to the pharmacy 4 Km down the road, and you told us that I was necessary... we also took very good care of your wife to make her feel better.

I am sorry that this issues made such impression, the tip part I can tell you that the information some how was given or received in the wrong way. Thank you for your comments as it is the only way we can try to improve our service to your future visit and for all our other clients. As proof we have acted to make sure that your concern will now have no room for any miscommunication.

VIsited La Cusinga with a group of environmental studies students as part of our course learning about eco-tourism and sustainable business in the fragile tropical coastlines and forests. This place is a model of sustainability, from the local wood used in all furniture, to the energy production from hydro and solar sources and conservation work to preserve the ocean and particularly Marino Ballena national park. If you like being woken up in the morning by howler monkeys and ocean waves and having breakfast looking at toucans and hummingbirds then you're in the right place. Yoga terrace is beautiful and there are many trails to explore and birds to observe on the property. Best birding spot is on the main terrace, no need to go anywhere. Food is great, refined and with local flavor, regards David! Thanks again to Geiner for having us over.

Before going I cynically thought La Cusinga must have written the TripAdvisor reviews themselves - I couldn't have been more wrong! This family run lodge is so welcoming, the food cooked by David, Chef of the Jungle delicious (local, fresh produce cooked with imagination), fantastic views, wonderful sunsets and insects and animals galore (but fortunately not bitten). The sea was warm and clean. We walked so much during the day through the jungle that we were asleep by 8.30pm and woken by the howler monkeys at dawn, in time for a swim in the sea before breakfast. Juan, the manager, is most helpful and helped us organise some excursions (whale watching, zip wire through the jungle and kayaking on the mangroves). We felt emotionally and physically restored and really didn't want to leave! Only suggestion would be to supply some cushions for the furniture on the terrace to be more comfortable when relaxing there. Jenny Newsom

Truely one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. I found myself not wanting ever to go indoors as there was just too much to see outdoors. Of my two weeks in Costa Rica this was definately the place where I saw and experienced the most. Tucans, humpback whales, posion dart frogs, howler monkeys, seaturtles, countless birds...you name it, they have it here. The food was incredible, and the staff were helpful and knowledgable about the area. If you want to experience the true beauty and biodivereisty that Costa Rica has to offer, this is the place to be!

Stayed just a few days, and was sad to leave, as so much to do just on the territory of the lodge: hiking, beach, yoga, trails, and much more....
Great design and views from anywhere. Fantastic food (Chief David is the best!)

This place is unreal. Breathtaking view of an oceanside sunrise every morning. Wildlife filled trails which can provide whole days of nature observing - everything from howler monkeys to sea turtles. Minutes away from humpback whale viewing as well. No need for any music as nature provides the beautiful ambiance. Designed so that every where you sit or stand you are in an ideal observation point of the ocean or the rainforest. A birdwatcher's dream come true! Tucans and hummingbirds were only a few feet away from our balcony.

In terms of eco-lodges, this place is the real deal.
The thought that went into the sustainable architecture is apparent in all of the beautiful details, and the surroundings are teeming with tons of wildlife. The beach looks as though it's part of a Jurassic Park set, and the food is superb.
In all, La Cusinga is a wonderful manifestation of the eco-tourism concept. The staff are local (as are the owners) and everything has been planned to help visitors put the least amount of strain on the local ecology while they learn about it and enjoy it.

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!
