Our one night stay in the jungle with a beautiful ocean view was excellent. Friendly staff, nice room, beautiful views and great breakfast, only a few km from highway.

At km 167 of route 34, about 20kms south of Dominical, near playa Ballena, take the steep road going into the jungle to reach Finca Bavaria and you'll reach a small corner of paradise on earth. 4WD is needed. Small, elegant, beautiful, solar powered. The pool filled with spring water,  is immersed in the lush jungle overlooking the Pacific ocean, as the rooms and terraces. In Jan the sun sets right in front of it offering unforgettable sunsets. Breakfast is delicious. People are very nice. Far away you can hear the roaring cries of the squirrel monkeys.  About $100 all included for a room for two. No wifi just relax.
Highly recommended.

We were winging it on our trip. We figured we'd just drive and find a place; no pre-booking. We lucked upon this place, and it started our trip off right. The drive up will have you questioning your decision, but stick with it because the sunset view from the patio is worth it. The rooms are clean and well appointed, and the hosts were gracious. We woke to howler monkeys and parrots, quickly followed by a delicious tico breakfast, then headed out on a few adventures. Don't miss a swim at Playa Ventana. And be sure to don some gumboots and hike through the rainforest to the streams and waterfalls; a good rainforest dunk to be had there. We enjoyed our stay there so much that we stayed another night on our return drive.

We stayed two nights here and it was perfect. Sleeping in the jungle with the luxury of a modern room. We had a nice king size bed and our kids each had their own twin. The bathroom was nice and big. The best part was the view from our back door over the jungle and the ocean. Also, the view from the pool is amazing as well. The breakfasts are quite good - a mixture of German and Costa Rican. You need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get up the steep and bumpy driveway.

Hagen our host was so very kind, personable and knowledgeable. We stayed here 3 nights in a superior room. Ocean view from our private patio. The bed is firm, no ac here - doesn't need it - cool breeze and ceiling fan is all you need. The room was huge - very large bathroom. Very modern fixtures - high and low flow toilet - great water pressure in shower and hot water. We recommend you bring a flash light and binoculars with you. Both are available at the hotel but only one so, if they are full you will want your own. Flashlight for walking to and from room at night and being able to see all the cool wildlife out at night. The Binoculars are so you can see the Toucans etc...up close while enjoying your coffee at 6am. The howler monkeys will wake you up early but take advantage of this and walk up to the central seating area and have a coffee and watch the birds. The pool is large and they have 6 lounge chairs. You can pay $8 for breakfast - and it is a great one - good eggs - bread, jam, avocado, tomatoes, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruits, meats, cheeses. Plenty to eat.

You will really need a car and 4x4 to reach the finca. No other food is served here so you will need to eat lunch and dinner out. There is no place to store snacks - no food in rooms to prevent ants. We didn't have any bugs in our room, which was shocking given how close it is to the forest - they have 2 hikes on the property.

They have access to a beach which you could walk to. We did hit up the Park beaches - go low tide! High tide and they will not let you on certain beaches as they are covered with water. So, hitting it early and then returning to swim at the pool is ideal. On a clear day you can enjoy the sunset and Hagen will make you his special Frozen Pina Colada or Daiquiris.
They do have a full bar and prices are really reasonable. He will even leave out a cooler for beers at night so you can just write down what you had.

Great service. Lovely location. Restful and relaxing. Saw white face monkeys while chilling at the pool. This is an area you go to rest, enjoy the beaches and the area reserves. This is a slow paced community.

Room Tip: If you can get the rooms with the ocean view.

Forget about your boring standard Days inn, Best western rooms. Rooms are spacious, beautifully tiled floor, big bathrooms with high water pressure and German fixtures, and a safe in the room. All rooms have views to the ocean and larger rooms have a private terrace. There is a waterfall that is walking distance and also several trails for hiking. Plenty of wildlife around where you can take pictures we saw some parrots, tucans, lots of different birds and one morning we were awaken by monkey sounds. You are within walking distance to the beaches. Stunning views and sunsets are unforgetable and romantic. and at nights the bar is open. Your host Hagen will go out of his way to make sure you have everything you need. Pool is pretty large also with a view of the ocean. Breakfast "gourmet" Buffett for $8.00 (worth it) Even though we went in the worst month October where it rains and pours every day the road was in good shape and we had no problems driving to the finca.

Finca means farm. So close to the jungle. The hostess is very nice. The grounds are well manicured with flowering plants everywhere. The main dining area is open on both sides so it does get a breeze. In the evening this is a cooler place to hang out. The view from there is stunning. The pool also has the same stunning view down to the ocean. The rooms have white mesh curtains over the french doors and full length windows. It is very light early in the morning. You have to be a good sleeper to sleep late. The french doors and windows are glass louvers. When open they let some of the heat out, but there is no breeze in the room. There is no A/C, and there never will be with those louvers. The fan is on high all night. There are mosquito nets over the beds, but we didn't need them. The back porch on room 4 ends with a drop off to the jungle. This was great. Not all rooms were like this. There is a hammock there. You can hear the birds, bugs, and frogs in the night. There could be more table space in the room. The room needs one more light. The fixtures are all top notch, nothing cheap, old, shoddy, or plastic. . The shower has plenty of hot water. No shower soap or shampoo provided. There was a large painting of a flower on the wall in the room for sale for $450. We all drank the water and were fine. 80% if the guests are German.
Breakfast is at 8 AM, coffee at 6:30 AM. Gourmet Breakfast buffet style is $8, kids too, and it deserves the adjective gourmet. Ham, salami, sharp cheese, CR cheese, gallo pinto, dark German bread, white bread, eggs, plantain, avocado and tomato, fruit, muesli, yogurt, corn flakes, honey. The dining area is arrayed with flowers in a tasteful manner. There are many wildlife identification cards.
No food is served in the evening. There are restaurants a few km away. A cooler is left out with drinks in it you can take after 6PM. Write your taking on a paper for your tab The staff is generally not around after 6PM.
There is the "morning hike" through the jungle, but better wildlife viewing walking on the road. I saw coatis, wild pig, green parrots, toucans, turkey, many other birds. I saw more wildlife on the dirt road here than in some of the National Parks (I spent much time looking on the road). From 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM I got no bug bites on the road without bug spray.
Finca Bavaria is 800 mts off the main road. You need 4 wheel drive to get up the dirt road. There is no WI-fi. There is WI-fi at Marina Ballina restaurant 5 km north, next to the super mercado. We took a 4 hour whale tour combo snorkel tour for $65. We saw a mother and new baby humpback whale. The snorkeling is just OK. There is only one place not so wavy that you can snorkel, the tip of the whales tail on the south side on the rocks. The beaches beside Playa Uvita are rocky near high tide.
One can park at the night watchman's shack and walk 500mts down a steep hill to a beach in the national park. No else will be at the beach. Low tide is best. You can body surf. There is a 80ft wade through tunnel in the rock cliffs. There is a fresh water water fall you can rinse off in. This beach is great.
Heard howler monkeys every day. One day they woke me up at 5AM. Have to wait for breakfast at 8AM. You see a wide variety of bugs outside in the evening. A walking stick was on our door. A walking leaf was outside by a light. Some bugs make it into the room. Not bad though. There is a notice not to bring food in the room. It attracts ants. No refrigerator in the room. We left the food in the car and it got very hot.
