It's difficult to describe the view from this mountain home. We got there in after sunset so we were not able to appreciate the grandeur until we woke up the next morning. Many of the other reviews mention the drive up the mountain as being difficult, but if you have a four wheel drive it really is no problem and it actually adds to the experience. The house was well finished and well maintained. Trina was very helpful and very friendly.
This house is perfect for those wanting to do some adventure vacationing while having a peaceful respite to return to in the evening. The town of Uvita has everything you could want, including grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, restaurants, outfitters, etc. and is a 10 minute drive down the mountain. Wildlife lovers will also love the place as we were constantly being visited by toucans, aracari, hummingbirds, and the local pizote my kids named Jo Jo. We heard howler monkeys every day and although on two different occasions they were fairly close to the house, we did not see any.
While we loved going on daily excursions to the zipline, the waterfall at the base of the mountain, or whale watching, but we were equally happy to get back to the house. It was great watching the kids have a blast in the pool while my wife an I relaxed with a few cocktails in the cool of the evening.
Great trip and would definitely recommend to anyone interested in visiting this part of Costa Rica!
Spectacular! We loved this house so much we
stayed a extra day! The house is spacious,
beautiful, spotless! The view was breathtaking. We
loved bird watching from the deck. The owners have gone above
and beyond making sure every comfort is taken
care of. The kitchen actually made cooking fun! We
highly recommend this house!
Must say that our family's second trip to Costa Rica was fabulous. Whales Tail (Casa Cola Ballena) was better than advertised. Arrived on a Monday evening after a long (3 hrs) drive in from San Jose. Trina meet us at the BCR (can't miss) and drove us up to the house. Had a few minutes to gather some groceries which was a plus. The drive up to the house was approx 4km, but the terrain was crazy...definitely need 4x4 automobile. We rented a car from Adobe (referred by Mark and Sarah) and they gave us a great rate. Anyway, the drive up to the house is kind of hard to explain. At night (in the rain) is interesting, following Trina up the mountain is crazy, during the day not so bad, great views, but rough on the old suspension/tires. Arrived at the house and it was absolutely amazing. The grounds were meticulous, pool, deck, outdoor shower, landscaping, and outdoor furniture all looked like they were out of a Southern Living magazine, just perfect! The house was so beautiful. Pictures don't do it justice. The three bedrooms were perfect for our group (7). The kitchen and indoor living spaces were so nice, even though we spent most of our time outside on the yoga deck enjoying the views and pool. Some of the amenities in the house included washer & dryer, internet (apple) tv, whole house stereo (Bluetooth), pool floats, mask/fins, plenty of beach towels, etc… The house comes with a local cellphone which was great. We probably texted Trina a dozen times asking her for suggestions (food, activities, sights) and she was very generous to make herself available for our questions. This trip was very special because one of our daughters got engaged. We surprised her by flying in her boyfriend midweek and he proposed to her outside by the pool. We let Mark and Sarah in on the secret about two months prior and they arranged a special dinner that evening at the house. Sarah had a local chef come in and prepare a traditional meal with fish and chicken (and wine) that was just perfect.
Some suggestions for food: The Dome (Uvita) great lunch, Baker Bean (Uvita) great breakfast items (bagels, egg sandwiches, and pizza to die for), Sabor Espanol (Uvita, the best meal all week, CASH only), Jolly Roger (in Domincal, up a steep mountain drive, 30+ flavor wings, sports TV’s, CASH only), Tortilla Flats (Dominical, on the beach, watch the surfers), Delicias Tiquicia (Quepos, great traditional local food & cheap and local pescaderia/fish market across the street), and one roadside café between Domical and Quepos called Roncador Café (just past the Savegre River).
Suggestions for activities: Jungle ATV (Uvita) was a wonderful day trip on ATVs. Uvita beach (walk the Whales Tale at low tide), Quepoa Expeditions in Quepos, awesome rafting experience. Nauyaca Falls, long walk, but well worth it, great swimming areas. Uvita Waterfall, on the road to the house, another great swimming hole. Our week in Costa Rica was one we will never forget. Everything was just so wonderful and we are so thankful to Mark and Sarah for letting us stay at their home.
