“What an amazing find....”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

I don't think I will have enough space to go through all the fabulous points about this hotel but here goes.... My Husband & I booked last minute after finding this on Mr&Mrs Smith. Upon arrival after a long drive from St Malo we were greeted beautifully by Rainer who offered us to just sit down and relax in the sun whereby we were then brought Champagne and a little bite to eat. We were instantly relaxed & in holiday mode. On first impressions the Chateau is as stunning if not more so than in the photos. The courtyard is a lovely sun trap where you can just relax or use the wifi (which we found to be very quick). After our drinks & nibbles we were shown to our Suite which had views to die for.
Room: The room was very stylish & the floor to ceiling windows which you can fully open on to a Juliette balcony was perfect to wake up to every morning. Satin slippers and robes provided. Beautifully clean.
Restaurant: You can either sit outside or in the restaurant (to the left where you can see the open plan kitchen or to the right with the lovely big fireplace). We ate here every night as there was so much choice and very reasonable in price. The food was always stunning. You must try the local wine especially the red.
Location: Very close to Bergerac at only a 20 min or so drive. Quick walk to the Dordogne & slightly further walk onto Mouleydier centre.
Service: Impeccable.... nothing more to say!!! Special mention to Charlie & Rainer for all you did to make our stay wonderful and Charlie for organising a fabulous day for our anniversary! Also I must mention the wait staff in the evenings who were always excellent!

We are already planning our next trip here.

Delightful location a few minutes walk from the Dordogne--if you're an early riser, or jet-lagged as I was, I recommend an early morning walk down to the river to the ancient locks just in front of the hydroelectric station, where on a brisk mid-March morning the mist rises off the water to great picturesque effect. The multinational front-of-house staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating. The first room we were assigned had no hot water and we were instantly reaccommodated to a neighboring room--unfortunately, that too had hot water issues the next morning when we tried to take two back-to-back baths, with the water running lukewarm through the pouring of the second. This should warrant a point deduction but every other aspect of the hotel is so excellent that it would be churlish to do so, and as we reported the problem, I'm sure a solution is in hand. The hotel has magnificently atmospheric and chic public spaces and the restaurant really excels. On our first evening, the 25 euro three-course menu de luxe turned into a six course extravaganza if you include the amuse bouche, the pre-dessert, and the madelines with coffee--truly excellent value, with the main course a very inventive magret de canard served on a bed of half-mashed brussel sprouts (sounds better in French, perhaps). So good that my other half had it again the second night, when we ordered a la carte. Breakfasts are also quite outstanding, with top-notch ingredients, Illy coffee, and home-made jam. If I had one tiny quibble, aside from the hot water issue, it would be that some of the boutique hotel touches, such as the transparent perspex chairs dotted here and there, don't quite gel in my book with the traditional architecture, but that's no reason to deduct a point. A great find for the Dordogne in off-season and I'm sure a delightful spot all year round.

We arrived at Mouleydier at dinner time after a long train journey from Switzerland and an unexpectedly busy roads from Bordeaux so we were hot and tired. What a relief it was to receive a friendly welcome and be escorted to an inviting table in the courtyard - the perfect start to a lovely stay at the Chateau les Merles.

Our room - under the eaves of the Chateau - was spacious and well appointed (though is all that black paint strictly necessary?). GIven the incredibly hot weather, we were also very grateful for the air conditioning.

Breakfast and dinner, served in the courtyard restaurant, was always a delicious and relaxing experience. The pool was a great place to come back to cool down after a hot day discovering the delights of the Dordogne countryside.

The managers and staff at the Chateau manage to create a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere that attracts locals and visitors alike and is certainly worth visiting again.

Room Tip: If you go in the summer, try to avoid the rooms on the second floor - they do get very hot despite t...

We had a wonderful week in the apartment with our 3 children. The space was ideal for us, with 2 large bedrooms plus a large open plan lounge, diner, kitchen. Our favourite element was that the patio doors opened onto the beautiful garden, right by the pool. The hotel was very peaceful so we felt like we had our own private garden and pool with an unbeatable view of the dordogne. The staff were incredibly friendly. Our car broke down and the concierge and manager put them selves out at great lengths to help us have car repaired. The food was outstanding and the children's menu was ideal. We also prepared many meals in the apartment. There were no other children which was a shame but there is so much to do in the area that we were out a lot of the time.

The only drawback was that the pool was very cold and very deep, which was unwelcoming for our 3 year old. Despite the stunning location it is a good 40 minutes drive from the main tourist attractions.

We loved it and would love to go back, especially without our children!

Room Tip: Apartment was great for families

What can I say? Booked for two nights and ended up staying for four nights!
Staff and owners absolutely wonderful. As were the restaurant, rooms and 9-holes golf course (not easy mind you). We'll be back!

The greeting on arrival is warm, quickly followed by a chilled glass of local champagne. I had booked a food/wine holiday which was a perfect combination of instruction, hands on experience, demonstration and relaxed escorted trips out. The staff are the heart of the Chateau, friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was excellent with an impressive wine list, but do try the local red - its good!

The room was comfortable, clean and if I had to pick fault, the lack of a full length mirror was slightly annoying.

I would go back without hesitation, a very enjoyable 6 days.

I read some of the Trip Advisor reviews before staying here and as usual there were a couple 'terrible' and 'poor' reviews amongst many many more 'excellent'. I have to wonder whether these 'terrible' people are serious with the reasons for such bad reviews. Chateau Les Merles is an exquisite old Chateau 10km to the East of Bergerac set in some wonder grounds surrounded by acres of vineyards.

We stayed for 4 nights in October 13 and could not ask for anything more. The staff provide the correct amount of attentiveness, friendly, helpful, and make you feel perfectly relaxed. The food in the restaurant is exquisite as you would expect. The 'menu du jour' which was approximately 30 EUR was wonderful and matched the a la carte offerings in every way.

We tended to stick to the local 'Chateau Les Merles' wine which is a must (at least once) if you stay here, the red is fantastic.

We had room 12 which was upstairs. Yes it had creaky wooden floors which is what you'd expect for such an old building, however there was no bedroom below so I don't think it would bother anyone else. The exposed wooden beams gave a real feel to the building and the bed was superb. Easily enough space for a couple for a few nights and the bathroom was large, well finished and clean.

I can't comment on the 9 hole golf course because I don't play but it looked great set in the surrounding hills. We took our bicycles and had some great rides around the Dordogne valley.

It's so hard to pick fault, perhaps if I was staying there on business the need for a reliable wifi service would be important, as it happens the only place to really get a good signal was outside in the courtyard sipping a local wine - oh well, needs must!

Tips:

Get an upstairs room if possible, the views are stunning.
Book directly with the hotel and not through all those middle men like booking.com and hotels.com
