Grand Hotel de l'Europe
Ranked #3 of 5 Hotels in Langres
Reviewed 17 July 2014

I was heading back to the UK and decided to stop off as was getting tired and found l’Hotel de l’Europe in the high street using the sat nav. I parked my motorbike at the rear of the hotel, with a €4 supplement – there is parking infront along the road but didn’t’ want to chance it.

The room was clean, and very (extremely!) large, with 2 double beds, and a cot, along with a large bathroom with separate internal toilet too, apart form that it was quite basic, with a small flat screen TV, and no wardrobes. I left the windows open during the night and was awoken around 3 am by the dustcart emptying the bins – efficient to do it at night – just I didn’t think so! The hotel’s located nearby to the large cathedral, and you’re able to take a nice walk around the outskirts and enjoy the beautiful views.

There was free WiFi available with a really good data rate enabling easy catch up on mails and news.

Breakfast was a simple European affair of cereals, croissants, hams, yoghurts, bread etc, but enough to get your day off to a good start.

This isn’t a cheap hotel when considering the amenities, but OK for a very brief stay - I think it’s a case of not the only hotel in the town, but 1 of a small few, so pricing is set accordingly.

Room Tip: At the rear of the hotel away from the street is quieter

Despite the tired look of the room, it provided a comfortable, clean bed. The WiFi service was good and the bathroom was large and the shower good. There was a pile of "something" on the bathroom floor when I first checked in but the rest of the room, linens, and bedding seemed spotless. The location is central and the petit dejuener was fine. Staff was friendly and helpful. Lodging options are limited in the old city of Langres so I would recommend this hotel but with that disclaimer.

We arranged to stay one night with a half board option. The room was a large family room with two double beds. The bathroom was of a good size but the lighting was not very good for shaving. The toilet was small and cramped but OK. The restaurant saved a table for us and when we arrived we were given a choice of meal. The food was of good quality but they were obviously under pressure that night as the courses were extremely slow in coming. We were seated for over two hours for a three course meal with coffee. Breakfast was a buffet of the usual French type. There is a car park for guests but you need to say when you wish to leave next morning as they are packed in one behind the other so you cant change your mind and leave early if you said you were staying late. The position on the main street is excellent and the town is very interesting and old with plaques everywhere with information on the history of the town in French and English.

The hotel is an old coaching house dating back a few hundred years, smack in the centre of the mediaeval walled town of Langres (built inevitably on top of a hill) - 3.5 Km of 30 metre high walls around the town, nice walk round the battlements. Langres is a sensible place to stop en route to/from e.g. the alps if you don't fancy the 750 mile drive in 1 go.

The hotel itself isn't very special - rather dated decor etc, but very clean and comfortable, friendly staff - you could stay in a modern motel 3 miles out of town for much the same price - but why would you do that? We didn't eat there - we went exploring - but the hotel is a Logi, which usually means excellent food at reasonable prices.

The old coaching stables provide secure off-street parking over night (4 euros charge).

We had our dog with us, no problem (5 euro supplement).

For some of my fellow reviewers this hotel is too much previous century. For us that was just the charm of the hotel. Plus the fact that it is located in the very center of the old city of Langres. Nevertheless it was easy to find a place for our automobile, because they provide you with a private parking behind the hotel.
Ask for a room in “le pavilion”, behind the main building and thereby very quiet. We had for € 70.00 a 2 person bedroom with a recently renovated bathroom and a separate toilet.
The dining hall with is twinkling bright incandescent candle lamps is indeed of quite old design. Which gives you the atmosphere of the good old times. With sufficient choice on the menu. The service was adequate, without an obligatory smile. We choose the € 27.00 pp menu, providing more than sufficient food, so we really had to go for a long evening stroll before going to sleep.

Large comfortable room, private parking and a reasonable restaurant. Had a good menu of the day for 18.50 euro. Which was very good but would've like to see cheese board and dessert trolley. Wifi in room was a marginal signal but a room nearer to reception would've been better. All in all a good overnight stop.

I first used this hotel in 2009 for an overnight stay when returning from a trip to France. From the outside it looks great - full of character and conveniently located. We were a party of three motorcyclists so not looking for tip top luxury but I have to agree with some of the previous comments about the interior looking rather tired. We didn't eat in the hotel, either for the evening meal or for breakfast but our receptionist was helpful enough.
