This place is well worth its Unesco listing as a World Heritage Site. Romanesque masterpiece. We stayed overnight in Conques, so after dining at our hotel we went to the church and listened to a very relaxing organ concert.
If you are planning to visit the area or you're on your way through the St-Jacques way, be sure to spend a night here.

The cathedral is quite spectacular but what really distinguishes this place isthe "trésor" or treasury where all the magnificent religious articles are kept. A window into the mysteries of religious practice showing the devotion of faith.

The abbey really is the icing on the cake of surely one of the most beautiful villages in France. The architecture and construction is stunning and the location in the heart of what is really a smallish village really shows what religion meant to folks in the dark, dim past. Go and be impressed and on a hot day go to cool down inside.

I can only endorse previous reviewers' comments. But make sure to have a good look at the amazing carvings in the vernacular style that adorn the main entrance to the abbé. Sitting at an outside table at the restaurant directly opposite is the best way to view, glass of wine in hand. From there we witnessed the arrival of a group of elderly pilgrims who were so full of emotion, there was much hugging and kissing for about twenty minutes, (perhaps they had started out on their journey when they were considerably younger). We also grew considerably older waiting for our meal, and if I could only remember the name of the restaurant, that would get its very own "special" review. We only wanted an omelette and frites but were told that would take too long so we were forced to order steaks from their "express menu" at double the price, to be then kept waiting for another 45 minutes. The metal chairs were particularly uncomfortable and during our fast we began to understand some of the sacrifices and privations suffered by weary pilgrims.

The village of Conques in the Midi Pyrenees region of France is even more beautiful than I expected. The architecture is fabulous and steeped in history, the abbey itself being a Unesco world heritage site. The day I visited last week was hot and sunny and the lovely flowers throughout the village set it off perfectly. One word of advice, the village is located on a steep hillside but parking is available on either side of the village further down the hill which was beneficial to my elderly parents. Some of the pathways are uneven in places so visitors with limited mobility may require assistance. Definitely worth a visit by old and young alike and all photography enthusiasts.
