“Just fabulous”
Reviewed 3 May 2009

Stylish rooms, wonderful views, great staff and two fabulous restaurants - what more could you ask. Meals at both the downstairs brasserie and the smaer Liegeoise upstairs were wonderful - and a three coourse lunch for artound 20e a head downstairs is fantastic value - especially as it is mainly wonderfully fresh fish. Can't wait for our next visit. Only downside - noisy youths outside in tghjer early hours of the morning,

The hotel is OK... but what people come here for is the food.

Wonderful classic french dining, in an old-fashioned dining room overlooking the sea. Enjoy the show of wind- and kite-surfers hopping around the white-tipped waves during your apéritif!

This restaurant has been close to getting a Michelin star for several years; the staff and chef have been trying their hardest! I think now is the time to go, while they are still trying so hard.

The menu is more classic than creative - a good thing in my opinion after having a few too many "nouvelle cuisine" meals composed of microscopic works of art lathered with "foam" this and "essence" that.

Main course portions at the Hotel Atlantique are generous sized for the Northern appetite.

The cheese trolley is to die for. Good cheese trolleys are endangered species and almost never found anymore; I would go here for a meal, for the cheese trolley alone.

As for the prior review "Alas": If you can't stand France, the French, their way of driving, their way of cooking, their way of talking.... WHY are you going to FRANCE for your weekends?

And PS, if you pay 75 euros for a double room don't be surprised if it's in the back!

Hotel Atlantic is a great place to stay for a night or two, enjoy the sea air and have a few really lovely meals.

If you are looking for an alternative place to stay after a good dinner in Hotel Atlantique, I recommend the B&B "La Goelette" which is just a few doors down and has rooms equivalent or better to the hotel's.

  • Liked — Great honest French food, beautiful view of the sea from the dining room
  • Disliked — The decoration of the inside of the dining room is a bit outdated.

We had tried earlier in the year when we were passing to get in to this hotel but it was fully booked but it did give us a chance then to have a look inside and we were very impressed and disappointed that we could not get in.
This time I booked in advance to be certain to get in. I booked a superior double with sea view and was given a fabulous room on the ground floor with a balcony and exit directly on to the promenade and the beach. The room was modern, spacious and spotlessly clean.
It was my wifes birthday so I had booked us in to the restaurant for our evening meal which was absolutely fantastic. Friendly attentive service in excellant surroundings with a great sea view.

Food was superb.

Staff throughout were attentive and friendly.

I would not hestitate to recommend this to anybody

The hotel itself is not very good as the rooms are very basic, ludicrously small and difficult to move around in. The larger, more expensive rooms are more spacious, but there are few amenities. We have stayed and dined here 3 times.

The restaurant, La Liègoise, on the other hand is excellent with a high standard of innovative cooking and excellent service. It is well worth the price, and has an excellent wine-list too.

We have eaten five times at the Hotel Atlantic in the last five years and stayed twice. The first couple of visits would have merited the full five stars but now it has declined to an averagely good hotel with an overpriced restaurant that provides high class food rather diffidently. Now working outside Europe, we had looked forward to starting our French holiday with a stay at the Atlantic. However, instead of the friendly students who used to wait on table the serving staff now have very smart uniforms and a couldn't-care-less approach which means wines and dishes don't arrive in a coordinated fashion. Either the number of courses on the set menu have been reduced or they didn't all arrive and coffee was never offered. The standard of the cuisine is still good but didn't seem quite as exquisite as before and was quickly outclassed by cheaper meals in less pretentious restaurants later in our trip. Then when we switched on the television at the volume setting on which the previous occupants had left it, we had a rapid visit from the manageress and an assistant to say our neighbours were complaining about the noise -- all this before midnight. The Atlantic clientele is predominantly over-65s so that could explain that episode or it could have been that the TV was showing France being beaten at soccer by the Scots! Either way we can see no good reason to stay there again. It is just not special enough. To top it all we discovered a month or so later we had overpaid when comparing the original confirmation email with the room rate we had been charged for the room.

We have recently stayed at the Atlantic Hotel. This is probably our 6th or 7th time there and we have always had a great time. It's always nice to see the same staff there. We always feel welcome.

It's probably more a restaurant with rooms. The standard rooms are OK but It's always best to book the superior rooms - they are a bit bigger and generally nicer, especially the bathrooms.

The Lieigoise restaurant serves excellent food at a very reasonable prices( especially compared with the offerings served up in our local London suburban restaurants ). The basic set menu is only 35E and is presented as beautifully as more expensive options. The Promenade en Mer menu has a number of fish and seafood courses and is very good, especially with the wine pairing where each course is served with a different wine. We had a large family party there a few years ago and everything was flawless.

We've already booked our next visit.

My husband and I stayed at the Atlantic for one night the other week. We stayed in No 17 and although it has a superb beach front view, I felt it was a little tired. The wardrobe had a horrid smell and the pillows and bed sheets etc had been round the block a few times. The bathroom was clean enough, however, I did feel that 10 euros for a simple breakfast was a bit much, you'd be better off going into the town.

The main reason we stayed at this hotel was to sample the restaurant on the 2nd floor, having been before for lunch we wanted a return visit, this time for dinner. What a meal, not cheap by any means but the turbot and oysters were divine. We were amazed how busy the restaurant was for a Tuesday night, clearly people had booked months in advance, especially for the tables looking directly over the seafront.

To sum up, I wouldn't stay at the Atlantic again, but I'd visit the restaurant without a doubt.
