Altana is the only place to stay in Santorini. Run by twin brothers who are so welcoming and accommodating. Every need is provided for. Rooms are beautifully appointed and immaculate. Breathtaking views. Delicious breakfast. Easy walk to town. Gorgeous sunsets. Thank you Cristos and Marios for making our stay in Santorini so memorable. You're the best hosts we've ever encountered, by far.
Marios also makes the best cocktails and Cristos serves the most delicious Santorini white wine

Room Tip: There are only nine rooms so book well in advance. All rooms are great.

We stayed at Altana Mid-Late May 2013 for our honeymoon on the recommendation of Lindsey at Ultra Tech Travel in Pennsylvania. We initially had reserved a different resort for our stay but the moment we got there we realized how lucky we were to have consulted Lindsey - who convinced us to change our reservation to Altana.

We arrived late in the evening, but we were still greeted by the owners Christos and Marco in the hotel lobby with some dessert wine. They even provided a mini "consultation" of the things to see and do on Santorini - Which was great because we had absolutely no idea where to start! They were kind enough to give us a small handy map of the island and even helped us put an itinerary together for the 4 days and 5 evenings we had there. They were always a phone call away if we needed anything 24 hours a day. The view from the hotel is breathtaking and definitely the best in the caldera since it is at the top of Imerovigli - an ideal location between Fira and Oia. Fira was a short hike (30mins) away and with stunning views and Oia a 15 min bus ride away. They even made the reservation for a car for us. All we had to do was ask Chris and the rental car service was at the hotel!

Definitely the hotel to stay at when in Santorini, all thanks to Lindsey at Ultra Tech Travel who helped put our trip together. Thank you Lindsey, Christos and Marco for an amazing trip!

One word sums up the Altana - friendliness. We hadn't booked there, but we went in for a drink one evening and spent every evening there after. The two brothers are the friendliest hosts we have met in our extensive travels abroad. We were shown round the accommodation and will definitely stay there next year.

We were fortunate enough to spend one night in the Altana. We were staying in Kamari but were given the chance of having a night on this side of the island. It was wonderful. When we arrived, I wondered where we were going & then we turned the corner & saw the view - fantastic, just how you always see Santorini on the television & in pictures. white buildings & blue domes overlooking a very blue sea. The twins who run the Altana spoke excellent English (both having studied in Scotland for 4 years) & nothing was too much trouble for them. They recommended & booked a restaurant for us which was very good & not too expensive & just a short walk away. The room was lovely & the main bedroom was set back in the rock. The view from the terrace was stunning & with a magnificent view of the sunset. Every where was spotlessly clean & tidy. Breakfast was continental with limited choice but nice bread, jams & fruit juices.
Thank you for an excellent stay & memories that will remain with us indefinitely.

We were lucky enough to experience the Altana for 4 nights before going to Kamari and the staff are the friendliest of people around and gave amazing advice for things we needed to do and see. The Location is beautiful and perfect for exploring Imerovigli, thira and Oia! We had chance to experience an apartment and the honeymoon suite! The apartment was great: really spacious, comfortable and had nice views but then we saw the honeymoon suite and WOW this room is something else! The jacuzzi with amazing views and the outside area was massive with out own place to sun bathe and see the hole Island with amazing views.

Anyone looking for a place to stay, as a travel agent and a well travelled person myself, I would recommend this highly for the location and hospitality from Chris & Mario! Thank you and we hope to see you again soon.

I can't believe that this time last year I was close to tears trying to make a decision about where to spend our 3 night anniversary stay on Santorini. The options were overwhelming, I spent many hours researching, and I had no idea what to expect. Now, if we were to go back - and I assure you that someday we most certainly will - I wouldn't pause to think about it. Our decision would already be made, with no second thoughts. This will read like a novel, because you need to know what you'll be missing if you stay elsewhere!

From the beginning, the owners were very responsive to emails and helped me make a decision about which room to select, even offering me a reduced rate. Their English is exceptional so you have nothing to worry about in terms of correspondence, except the time difference.

The Altana is not for everyone, that is certain, but anyone who chooses to stay there will have a magical experience. We knew that we wanted to stay in Imerovigli. We had been told it had the best views and least crowds. People were right on both accounts, and though we visited Fira and Oia during our stay and both were beautiful and had a lot to offer, if you prefer a more secluded, quieter, and romantic stay, I would suggest Imerovigli. We also thought the views from Altana were the best on the whole island (and we covered much of it). The placement of the rooms and especially from the pool give you a view of the caldera from tip to tip, and the smaller island out in the center. You can see the boats coming and going, and have a fabulous sunset every evening. Everyone talks about the sunsets on Santorini (usually in reference to Oia) and they are truly amazing no matter where you are, but my favorite time of day was sunrise. I'm not a morning person, but I was up before dawn everyday because watching the island being lit up as the sun rose was astounding.

We were given a free upgrade to the "Private Superior Suite" which has a private veranda with outdoor jacuzzi. I believe they do this whenever possible. However, even if you don't luck out in such a way, this is a charming, quiet place and the less private verandas didn't seem to bother guests. In fact, meeting people from all over the world was rather interesting, and we enjoyed crossing paths occasionally with other folks and chatting with them. It was a very good mix of backgrounds. This often happened down at the bar in the evenings, and one evening a gentleman guest from Argentina even played the guitar and sang some songs of his homeland. It's also not a large hotel, so you won't feel like people are up in your business very much. Some of the studios look off to the side - more toward Fira - than they do toward Oia where the sun tends to set. I don't see how this could make staying there any less stellar. People often gathered at the rooftop pool for the sunset, as it provided the closest thing to a 360 view that you could get anywhere nearby. That said - the owners will always do their best to upgrade you if something is available. They want you to have the best experience of the island, and your stay, as possible. I got a peek at several of the rooms, and all of them looked as pictured on the website, and I would stay in any of them -- but I think I'd always ask for the private superior suite we were in.

Everything was spectacularly clean for open-air, island living. The bath & shower amenities were really nice, and plenty of hot water in the shower. Of course you can't put paper in the toilets - but that is everywhere in Greece, especially on the islands. Ample towels, proficient maid service, etc, everything was just what you would expect from this type of boutique hotel. The a/c worked, but we slept with the windows open. It was a little warm, but not uncomfortable. There are lots of stairs, so be prepared, but this just made me feel like I worked off all my heavy eating! I loved all the little details (see pictures), the landscaping, decorations, and ancient treasures. The proprietors have taken much care to turn your "stay" into an "experience," and they accomplish this with flying colors.

The only comments I might have, would be very "American" ones. The jacuzzi wasn't heated, but Christos explained why and it was an environmental reason (they are very environmentally conscious, which we appreciate). It was more like having a small sitting pool on your veranda - which we actually enjoyed! It would have been nice in the cooler evening to have warmer water. If you were there for a longer stay (ours was only 3 days), you might want to venture out for breakfast once or twice. Everything was delightful, but it is the same buffet every morning. I loved the fresh yogurt and fruit, and the homemade pastries were delicious. We definitely ate our fill and loved it all.

We were also told that we wouldn't experience Greek culture by staying on this very "commercialized" island. In fact, I think we experienced a LOT of culture, thanks to Christos and the environment the hotel cultivates. He wasn't afraid to send us to do the "touristy" but important things (they are popular for a reason), but also tell us where we should go off the beaten path. We appreciated his wealth of knowledge, and only wish we had had more time to see and do everything. I was expecting Santorini to be the R&R portion of our 10 day trip to Greece, but we were VERY active and tired every evening.

Our first morning, Christos spent about an hour going over a map of the island in great detail. He gave us many options and even helped us narrow it down to what we could feasibly do in our short stay. He arranged for a car rental -- which was great and a lot of fun driving around the island! -- and we never felt unsafe driving. He also arranged for late checkout for us, since our flight left much later in the evening, which enabled us to go spend a day at the beach, store our bags, and come back to get refreshed and changed before departure. The staff was all pleasant and helpful. Really nothing was too much to ask these kind people, and we will forever hold them in our hearts as the doorway to our first experience in such a wonderful country.

Just fantastic. We went for our honeymoon and it could not have been better!

Amazing view: we kept going back to Altana when we were exploring Santorini, as the view from Altana was just the best.

Great hosts: Mario, Christos and their team do all they can to make your stay memorable.

Super breakfast: not only is breakfast delicious, they are happy to take it up to your room for you, so you can enjoy it with the best view of the island.

All in all a great place to stay and despite the price tag excellent value for money. We would go back tomorrow if we could!
