“I cried when I left”
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

Somehow Mario and Christos have this amazing way of making every guest feel like you are their most important - although I still suspect we actually WERE their favourite guests of the summer.

Never stayed anywhere like it before. The place was beautiful, but more importantly the entire staff provided the most amazing service ever.

I would never even think about staying anywhere else in Santorini.

Altana and its views of Santorini provided us with one of the best hotel experiences ever... It is not just about the luxury, it is about making us feel good. The beautifully sculpted houses built up in different levels, its terraces and narrow pathways immaculately painted in the traditional white & blue, the breathtaking views and the personalized service … Altana has it all.

Here our list of pros (lots of them) and cons (just 1):
+ The Views are some of the most beautiful in the island…on the highest spot of Santorini, with the volcano right in front, the deep blue waters, the beautiful church tower right there, and the whole island to the left, in its extension of bright white houses and steep cliffs…really, we could stay hours and hours there just soaking up pure happiness
+ The Location. Lots of good restaurants nearby and also many bars (with smoothies, fruit juices and cocktails), most with great views
+ The Service. Mario and Christos make you feel welcome and a truly valued guest, giving it a personal touch. Upon arrival, they welcome you as a friend into their house, immediately offering you juice and water (trust us, in the peak of the day in July, it felt like finding a treasure). They make you seat for a little bit while they introduce you to the hotel and the island … during this conversation our child saw the basket of fruits at the bar and asked for an apple. Marios got up and washed it, unpeeled it and prepared it in front of us, while he kept giving us his introduction
+ The Recommendations of what to do and where to eat. We all know that most places feel much more special when you have a local friend that give you the insider tips and make you have the truly ‘local’ experience (even as touristy Santorini can be). Well, the twin brothers are that local friend. We followed their recommendations of sightseeing and loved it … just wished we had had more time to cover it all. Also for restaurants, their tips were spot on. Great food, great wine, acceptable prices. Note: they never asked us the typical concierge phrase to tourists “when you are there, say you come from my side, they will give you special treatment” or “I can make the reservation for you” (which usually mean the concierge have a stake or something to gain in that ‘recommendation’). Christos and Marios really give you great tips so that you can have a wonderful time in Santorini
+ The hotel Architecture itself. It is really a masterpiece, probably the coziest hotel we have ever been
+ The Room quality and comfort. We stayed in a superior cave apartment, which was perfect to fit our family with two adults, one teenager and a 4yr old child … 2 separate rooms, 2 bathrooms, large living room with a small kitchen in the corner, a terrace with a table and chairs. The apartment was built up into the rock in a traditional style, very comfortable, very well taken care off
+ the Wi-Fi works very well, the best we had in Greece
+ the Price. When looking for a very good hotel in Santorini, it is easy to get lost in the 800EUR+ proposals … and we doubt they can offer anything more or better than Altana. Even though Altana is not cheap, in terms of absolute price, it is still much cheaper than the other high-end hotels of the same category and is definitely an excellent value for money. You get top quality service and a truly remarkable experience, for an acceptable price.

The only small note for improvement is on the breakfast. It is Continental type, mostly made of breads, pies, croissants, of good quality and in good variety, as well as homemade jams cheese etc... But we think it could be strengthened with more variety of fruits and some proteins, such as a variety of hams and eggs made to order.

Finally, we leave a few notes, which do not relate to hotel quality but for your attention:
-> If you are travelling with kids, consider that the narrow steps, cute pathways, top of the hill swimming pool and terrace without bordering walls, are not the a very kids-friendly architecture… It requires very tight supervision. But the view is so beautiful and the place is so special that it seemed our child was fully aware of the need to be more quite than usual and he was truly enjoying the experience. There was another couple with two children and also they were having a great time. Again, it is just not the place to be running around.:)
-> Be careful organizing your return, well in advance and do not rely on taxis. Most boats depart between 5 and 6 pm and also most people are getting back to the hotels at that time… it gets very busy and you will struggle to find a cab. Organize a transfer with enough lead time and stick to your schedule. We are experienced travelers but this time we got so caught up in trying to maximize our sightseeing, that we neglected this aspect … We assumes we could simply ask for a taxi when needed… but after calling 6 agencies with no success we ended up going with a private that took us to the port for 20 EUR.:)
Would we ever get back to Altana?... Right now!:) Do not hesitate to ask us, if you have any questions.

Mario and Christos have totally created an end to end wonderful hotel and travel experience. They are both committed to offering their guests the best experience in Santorini, complete with on-point restaurant and activity recommendations. The hotel itself is a beautifully managed mansion with spectacular views. We loved every single second of our stay here. We will be back!

It's easy to get caught up in the $1,000/night hotels in Oia so I wasn't sure what to expect when I booked the Altana. It turned out to be an amazing experience and one of the highlights of our entire vacation.

One thing you don't find in a lot of guides or reviews is that Imerovigli is the highest point of all the cliff-side towns. The Altana had some of the best views overlooking the main town of Fira and the rest of the island. While Oia is a nice place to stay, it's somewhat secluded by narrow winding roads to get to the northern tip of the island. Imerovigli has a couple good restaurants nearby and you could walk 20 minutes through town to get to everything in Fira (I would not recommend staying in Fira due to some of the clubs and crowds).

What really set the Altana apart though was the service. Cristos and Marius (sorry if I misspelled your names) were superb hosts and will make top notch cocktails customized to your tastes. They knew all the best places to go on the island and really helped us navigate all the tourist traps. Literally not one of their recommendations was bad, which left me wanting to do as many as possible in the four days we were there.

Overall a great experience and I look forward to going back one day.

Room Tip: Not many rooms, based on walking around they all should have a great view.

We stayed at Altana in June 2014 with our three kids and it was the highlight of our entire trip to Greece. The rooms are fine, not great, and the bathrooms could use an upgrade, but the service provided by Cristos and Marios is like nothing we've ever experienced. They sat down and spent an hour planning every aspect of our three days in Santorini and it was well worth it. They sent us to restaurants and beaches that we never would have found on our own. I cannot rave enough about these guys. They even recommended a great neighborhood to walk around in in Athens after we left. The pool at the hotel is great and the views are amazing.

This hotel is just amazing! To begin with, the cave apartments are lovely and spacious. But what really makes this hotel special are the owners Mario and Christos. The hospitality, warmth, and attention to detail is unmatched. we travelled to Santorini on a family vacation with my father, who is 80, and our children, 12 and 15. Mario and Christos were so lovely and so much fun that found ourselves ending each day in the reception area with them, talking and socializing while our kids enjoyed the various treats they made them each night. It was a glorious stay- I would never stay anywhere else on Santorini. It was hard to say goodbye.

We stayed here for one night of our recent trip to Santorini and it was amazing. Great location - amazing accomodations but what makes this place so special is the owners (the twins) are exceptional, they really go out of their way to make sure your stay is special. They cooked us up some special appetizers at a whim and they were amazing. We didn't get a chance to try their 5 course dinner but based on what we did try we would highly recommed it. Everything about this place was special and it is highly recommended - just make sure you book well in advance - they are very popular!
