“Astra Apartments are Awesome!”
Reviewed 15 October 2008

I never write these reviews but ALWAYS read them - this time I had to write for each of our hotels. We just returned so our trip was not high season, we went the first 2 weeks of October - GREAT time to go. Our travel agent at Fantasy Travel chose and booked this hotel for us. We absolutely loved it! The hotel itself is small, quaint and just beautiful. The pool area is very nice with a gorgeous view. Chris, the bartender, very attentive and fun to hang out with. The staff were the best part - VERY accomodating and SO pleasant - we knew it was important to them that we had a good vacation.

We would not have had any idea where to stay had this hotel not been recommended by our agent. We used Fantasy Travel at the advice of Matt Barrett's website www.greecetravel.com. We are SO glad we took his advice and used an agent - and especially Fantasy Travel. Our agent, Dina, was great - she got our trip just right. We got a nice room with a porch facing the caldera - at a reasonable rate. The view is just absolutely gorgeous! The room itself is nice, it is kind of like a "cave" - not luxurious but all you need. The porch and view is what is so great. BUT, all the hotels in Santorini have a great view - I cannot say it enough - the staff are what made this hotel such a great experience. Breakfast was yummy - more than enough for 2 people to eat, delivered to the room at our requested time. Fabulous! Just a fantastic experience overall.

When our travel agent recommended this hotel, I was a bit surprised, because most the travel books recommend Oia. But, she was SO RIGHT! The town of Imerovigli is a great location to be in - beautiful 25 minute walk down to Fira and an easy bus ride to Oia. It really was a perfect choice. There are several good restaurants very close by if you don't want to make the walk down to Fira.

Don't hesitate to choose this hotel, it was great - especially if you enjoy small, quiet, private, luxury accomodations with an emphasis on personal attention.

We had so much fun! And....use a travel agent - it will make things SO much easier - it was great to not have to worry about a thing (transfers, ferries etc). We've done it both ways and I will never do it all myself in Europe again - not worth the trouble. Fantasy Travel is wonderful!

My expectations of Astra were high given the price of our stay, and I'm very happy that they were exceeded. From the beginning of our five night visit to the end, we were completely overwhelmed with the exceptional service and comfort at this hotel. Our stay in Santorini marked the final leg of our honeymoon through the Cyclades, and it was here that we decided to really treat ourselves.

Making reservations at the hotel was relatively easy, and getting there from the port is arranged by the hotel. Imerovigli, the small township where Astra is located, is about a 40 minute walk along a very scenic path to the main town of Fira. There are plenty of interesting restaurants and shops along the way. The best view of the sunset is from the comfort of your own private balcony so there's no need to rush with the crowds to Oia.

This unique hotel appeased every one of our needs, and as a honeymoon couple, the staff truly went out of their way to make our visit romantic and memorable. Our room was also above and beyond anything we experienced on other islands. We had a full kitchen, a large bathroom, plenty of closet space and a spacious living room. The in-room breakfast you can enjoy on the balcony is unbelievable and an absolute must. We give this hotel our highest recommendations.

We went on our honeymoon to Greece for two weeks. We visited Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and Folegandros. We loved Santorini, but the Astra Apartments was disappointing. It's not that it's a bad hotel, but it definitely does not live up to its reputation. I say this for two reasons.

First, there are a lot of hotels in the same area that are a LOT cheaper but look exactly the same. Tholos, for example, is actually interwined with Astra. Literally, you walk down the stairs and cannot tell which rooms are Astra, and which are Tholos. In fact, the Tholos pool was right by our room and we wished we could go there (and considered sneaking in, but chickened out!).

Which leads me to our next issue -- the pool. This was soooo frustrating. The pool has 7 recliner chairs. That's it. And unless you wake up early, you cannot sit at the pool. People will leave their things on the chairs all day to save the chairs. I did actually complain to them about it and they said they would bring me a chair. But it's a sitting chair, not recliner. I did not want to sit at the pool, I wanted to recline. And for $500 Euros, I think I should have been able to recline at the pool. There is room for the recliners right next to the pool. I'm not sure why they don't put reclieners there.

The service was good. People were nice. The room was nice (the shower was awesome). But it was just not worth that much money (especially after the conversion from American dollars). Santorini is great, though, and I totally recommend going.

The Astra Apartments were the Highlight of our 2 week trip to Greece. We missed our flight from Athens to Santorini....therefore we missed the hotels private pick-up service. No problem, the Astra reputation in the community is so strong, that a unrelated shuttle dropped us off at not charge; just to be kind.

The Astra sits atop the inside curving rim of the remains of a volcano that exploded 1,460.00 years before Christ. The site is breathtaking and serial. Trust me the pictures can not do this island or apartments justice. Valentina the young and beautiful Greek woman with green eyes met us when we arrived. She is most definitely Greek, and her high education and proper English might be the reason another reviewer might not have perceived her as Greek. Just a lovey girl who knew so much about Santorini and fine nuance's that makes vacations special.

Chris the bartender at the pool was amazing. I never had such personal service in my life. the pool is gorgeous and spotless. The poolside food service was fast, fresh and delishish. And the other guests are fun, young, and just a lot of fun.

Nenard, another Waiter was very accommodating. Room service was outstanding. Private dinners are at your disposal on your own deck if requested. I am not sure what more this Hotel could offer. I feel the price was more than fair. The restaurant was one of the most beautiful views i have ever seen and the food just as spectacular. The fresh chocolate strawberries and wine from George Karayiannis is a pleasant surprise.

Theros beach has a wonderful new hip hidaway beach bar and Cayo is another beach bar club that is a blast. I am sure Valantina will be more than happy to help you find them. We met so many people from greece and visiting from greece. We miss you all. Argy and Jonas...we love you.

We would be afraid to stay anywhere else than the Astra.

We just returned from our honeymoon in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini and the highlight of the whole trip was definitely the Astra Apartments. The hotel was wonderful, the staff was wonderful and we fell in love with Santorini.

We stayed in room 101, which is right next to the reception office. Upon arrival, this worried both of us because we wanted privacy and didn't want everyone milling around in front of our room. This was not an issue at all...we didn't hear a sound from inside our room and even sitting on our front patio was very peaceful and relaxing. Our room had a very large living area, a separate kitchenette/bathroom area and an upstairs loft space which was the bedroom. I believe this is considered one of their superior rooms.

The hotel serves breakfast on your patio/balcony each morning and the food is wonderful. We actually looked forward to breakfast each day.

The pool area is beautiful and overlooks the caldera. It's easy to just sit out by the pool all day on one of the comfortable lounge beds, relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Chris, the bartender by the pool, was great also. The pool does get crowded during the day and just before sunset and I would say the only negative about our entire stay was that we wished there was more seating by the pool.

The hotel helped us rent a Smart Car for a day, which I highly recommend, and the rental car was delivered to us at the hotel and we just had to return the keys to the reception office when we were done - so convenient.

There is a path connecting the hotel to Fira which is about a 20-25 minute walk. There are many great little restaurants along the way and it was so nice not having to drive or take a taxi all the time.

Overall, this was one of the best vacation experiences I have ever had and would return to the Astra Apartments as soon as I had the chance.

The first word that comes to my mind when I reflect back on our recent stay at ASTRA Apartments in Imerovigli, Santorini, Greece is "tranquility." If you want to relax and unwind, this is the place to do it. The air-conditioned apartments are built in the style of Greek island “cave houses,” and are attractively painted white with blue trim. Because they are literally built into the side of a cliff, the apartments are nice and cool at night even without air conditioning. Our two-bedroom apartment was spacious and had a large terrace with a magnificent view of the caldera, including Skaros, Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni, Thirassia and the northern town of Ia. The sunsets from our terrace were just amazing.

George Karayiannis and his staff gave us a warm welcome and took the time to give us an orientation session on Santorini, complete with maps, tips and recommendations. The service at ASTRA was impeccable, and included a delicious breakfast delivered to our terrace every morning. Although we did not have dinner at ASTRA’s charming restaurant, we did order from the room-service menu, and every item we ordered was delicious. ASTRA also has a small but inviting swimming pool which is right on the cliff’s edge and is deep enough for diving. Although I forget the bartender’s name at the poolside bar, he was very personable and made a mean mojito!

Our four-day stay at ASTRA Apartments on the island of Santorini was the highlight of our two-week vacation in Italy and Greece. It was very easy to get there (a short flight from Athens), but very, very hard to leave!!!! Kudos to George Karayiannis and his staff at ASTRA for providing us with superb accommodations. We’ll be back!

We stayed at the Astra apartments for four days and three nights last week. Although the location is definitely worthy of 5 stars, the hotel experience was worthy of just 3 stars.

Our room (104) was large and spacious. However, it was located off the pool terrace (about 5-6 feet from the pool itself). While this could in theory be very pleasant, the constant influx of hotel guests using the pool/talking by the pool/having drinks by the pool was not very private or relaxing at all. In fact, the only way we felt we had a modicum of privacy was when we were inside our room with the shutters closed, as pool-goers could see right into our room when the windows were open.

Also, we did not have a "private balcony", rather there was a bistro set placed on the landing outside our room. In the morning, staff were cleaning/mopping the pool area which, while necessary, was not something you want to see or hear while you are eating your breakfast. The large HVAC unit next to us on the landing also quite disturbed the peace. The following morning, we decided to wake up an hour earlier for breakfast, (in order to avoid the commotion) but somehow the same happened. In addition other hotel guests were already using the pool area by 8 -9 am.

We did ask the front desk for a more private room. We were told that there were no other rooms available until our last night and that we would have to pay extra for an upgraded more private room.

Another problem was that the internet did not work in our room (neither the wireless nor the wire connection). We heard another couple talking about the same problem with internet connectivity. The staff told us to use a public computer terminal in the hotel for internet access.

Overall, the service was underwhelming considering all the accolades Astra has received in the travel community. I hate to be nit-picky, but this hotel did not live up to its billing in Frommers, Trip Advisor and Concierge.com. After traveling extensively through Greece, we found the staff to be merely adequate compared to other hotels we stayed in. We never met George Karayiannis, who we have heard so many good things about. The day time front desk clerk was not Greek, and this was clearly obvious as she just did not have the same warmth and friendliness that we had experienced at other Greek hotels. There is just something about Greek hospitality that you come to appreciate.

As an aside, I had told a Greek-American lady who I know (who visits Santorini often) where we were staying. She asked me how much we were paying. I told her $200 US, when actually it was just short of 400 Euro per night (because I was too embarrassed to tell her how much we actually payed.) She almost fell over apoplectic over the $200 and told me that we payed way too much. For instance, very close by, there is a nearly identical, very beautiful hotel that she stays in for just 100-120 Euro per night. In fact there are hundreds of similar hotels with great caldera views and nice rooms that are less expensive.

As a result of our room situation, we spent most of our days away from the hotel. We also took lunch and dinner at restaurants outside the hotel (various beach tavernas, Selene in Fira, Archipelagos in Fira). We also rented a quad ATV for 2 days. The rental company will deliver the ATV directly to the hotel. We spent two days at Perivolas beach, which we loved. There is a undeveloped and beautiful beach road that takes you from from Perivolas beach to Vlihada beach and back up to Akotiri.

There is also a spectacular ride from Imerovigli to Oia. Lots of places to stop for pictures. Reminded us a bit of Chapman Peak drive in Cape Town. This Imerovigli-Oia ride may have been the highlight of our entire Greece trip. We went early in the morning around 9 before the roads were too busy and before the cruise ship buses were on the road. Had a frappe in Oia on the terrace at Skiza. It was an incredible morning.

All in all, while we loved our time in Santorini, we will not be staying at the Astra apartments next time.

*Astra has 6 categories of accommodation. Clients chose our least expensive category. If privacy was a major issue for them we would have recommended a higher category offering complete privacy. They never expressed such. We offered a 200E suite upgrade for only 50E. They declined.

*As stated in previous responses, we are not in the habit of providing free upgrades under threat of bad reviews. We don’t feel that’s fair to us or our other clients who expect objectivity in these reviews, from paying customers.

*The apartment clients had is our most spacious Standard apartment as they apparently did appreciate, and also one of the most requested for it’s proximity to the pool which especially in the evening can be positively enchanting with your own “private” pool all lit up right in front of you. Perhaps it’s not for everyone, but again this could have been remedied by simply requesting more privacy and booking a higher category accommodation.

*Our reception staff is 100% Greek. Perhaps their English fluency confused clients. And if you read other reviews, this particular receptionist normally receives raves so we’re particularly perplexed by this one inconsistency.

*Internet connection was working fine by cable as always. Wireless signals are never quite as consistent as hard-wired systems, especially on a rocky island in the middle of the sea, which is why we offer both! And because perhaps our clients own laptops are not always set properly to foreign systems, we offer 100% compatible laptops on loan to take to your room! We even have an additional PC set up in our hospitality suite for all guests to use. With so many possible access options, all free of charge by the way, how could clients possibly complain of no internet?

*If a client feels we are priced beyond their budget, please feel free to choose a less expensive hotel, yes of course they do exist, but perhaps with much smaller accommodations and fewer services and facilities provided as we do, for example breakfast included and served on your balcony, 24 hour reception, gourmet restaurant, pool bar, room service, spa, luggage porters, transfer service, car rentals, full concierge services, etc… but this is 100% the decision of the clients to stay here and accept our rates or not. Our demanding clientele stays here because they value a full service hotel with more spacious accommodations and they are prepared to pay for it.

*Lastly, I am always happy to meet all of our clients and the great majority I do as I am at the hotel most days from 8am until at least 8pm. However as clients stated they were out for long periods every day, the chances of us running into each other are naturally reduced. But all they had to do is ask for me, that’s what I’m here for!

We thank you for this opportunity to respond.
