Reviewed 22 October 2009

Lovely hotel with fantastic service and great deck space. Two things I cannot emphasize enough - service and view. The service and people were fantastic through and through. The sunset on our little deck with the caldera view was wonderful each evening. There are many stairs to get to your room, lobby, etc. Charming, but if stairs are an issue, beware. Hotel is located right on the caldera path with direct access. The included breakfast was fabulous and homemade every day.

We spent 10 days in Santorini in late August 2009 and stayed at Heliotopos. It was a trip of a lifetime. We were married on the Island using Weddings by Heliotopos (with the lovely Lila leading the team). The wedding far exceeded anything we could imagine. Throughout the event planning stages, we were paranoid about the whole idea. Imagine two Midwestern (small town) Americans sending serious cash to strangers in a foreign country living on an exotic island. Well, it was amazing and we have the photos to prove it. Lila took care of the event and the hotel was absolutely the most beautiful and perfect setting for our private event. Besides our wedding, the 10 days at Heliotopos Hotel were unbelievably fantastic. The staff: Yiota, Stella, Lila, a great breakfast waitress who would create coffee drinks of your choice (all of which were FREE!), 2 buff general attendees (who served as chauffeurs, carried luggage up caldera stairs, and just created laughs), and a super thorough maid staff were all superb. The two of us travel often for science conferences and the like, and the staff at Heliotopos is beyond anything we have ever experienced.

Our room was great. We were a bit concerned about how the rooms would look. Helioptopos website provides only a limited number of photos and that generally means bad news. We believe that great places like to show off their facilities… Well, we were wrong here. On the website, our room only included one picture and we thought it would be a 1 bedroom studio. To the contrary, our studio had 2 level s (bedroom level, living space with couch level), 2 private balconys, and 1 quasi-shared balcony (it was ours, but other people could walk on it w/o entering gate). In short, our room was totally the bomb. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. Yiota toured us around upon our arrival, we were like AWESOME, what a total break.

Our venture to the island had been horrible (nightmare flight delays and lost luggage – more below), and with one view of the room our day and trip totally changed. Flying from Omaha, we had a 30 hour trip with multiple delays, missed connections, and more missed connections. The adventure culminated in our luggage not being there upon our arrival in Athens. Two days later, our bags were delivered to the Santorini airport. However, Aegean airlines would not bring them to our hotel because they claimed Northwest/KLM was responsible for losing them (neither Northwest nor KLM fly to Santorini). Well, the airport is completely across the island so getting there would have been huge problem for us … The staff at Heliotopos told us to relax. They would go get them for us. Amazingly, we were never charged for this. They just volunteered and picked them up for us, and had one of the buff attendee guys carry them to the room for us. Find this kind of service at a Marriott or Hyatt my friend! While our bags were missing, the staff directed us to the few stores that would offer the items we needed at a good price. Go to Hondos Center! The females of the hotel (Lila, Stella, and Yiota) even offered to bring Krista their American cosmetics from home for our wedding day, but luckily our bags arrived in time. Unbelievably thoughtful people is all one can say.

All aspects of the breakfast and service were phenomenal. Every morning, there was a fantastic breakfast. Traditional greek dishes, pastries, and for the less experimental: fresh whole fruit, cereal , eggs, greek yogurt, and toast. Krista’s personal favorite was the homemade breakfast pies that changed every morning from white eggplant, spinach, chicken, cheese, to many others. There were stuffed grape leaves, sundried tomatoes, wonderful greek cookies of multiple types, cold cuts, and cheeses everyday; topped off with freshly squeezed orange juice and your choice of (8) coffee drinks (all included free of charge). Lila makes the pies and homemade breakfast pastries each day. Tony loved the fresh fruit and ate mountains of it daily… overall, much better than what you’ll find anywhere in the States. The greek cookies were fantastic (reasonably healthy too for a cookie). We basically ate enough at breakfast so that we were never hungry for lunch! During our whole time on the island we had only 2 meals per day…

About the hotel itself, it is perfectly located. About a mile walk to noisy Fira (depends on route – walk the caldera rim or the road). Not sure if Peggy from Crete got lost on the way because we found Fira much closer than her August 5th posting. We spent hours researching where we wanted to stay, by looking on Trip Advisor, and inspecting each hotel’s website. Many of the hotels with higher ratings looked nice on the outside (we saw many, 10-15, during our 10 day exploration of the island), but appeared less than Heliotopos in regards to location or exterior appearance. Obviously, we cannot comment on their service. We would not recommend staying in Fira. It is noisier and a party town, and cruise-ship laden (many tourists buying gifts during their 6 hour stay on the island). However, we both agree if we were in our early 20’s Fira would be a great locale if looking for a bar scene. Nowadays, we are 32 years and a couple on honeymoon. From Heliotopos, a nice dinner in Fira is walking distance down the hill or a standard fare 5 Euro cab trip. Some of the confusion about how far Imerovigli (and its hotels) is from Fira arises from the fact that there are multiple ways to get there. If you walk the cobblestone caldera rim path, it will be about 30 minutes because you are taking the winding “scenic route”. If you walk the paved road, it is about 10 minutes. By cab its 5 minutes. Most of the hotels on Trip Advisor’s top 10 are bunched together so it won’t make a 30 second difference in travel time to Fira or Oia, regardless of where you stay. The Santorini Princess is the one exception as this hotel is about a 1 mile further away than the great hotels of Imerovigli; basically the hotel is situated by itself on the road toward Oia. The Princess looked nice but its locale is not perfect for walking to desirable sites.

Prior to our trip, Tony spent about 60 hours on the internet looking for the best place to stay and things to do in Santorini. The research paid off. When we looked at Heliotopos our only concern was its #7 rating at the time. Also, there were a couple of negative reviews from back in 2005. We chose the hotel because of all the good reviews and their ability to help coordinate our wedding. The negative comments were unfounded during our 10 day stay with Heliotopos. Everyone was friendly. The staff was very professional. We also loved the personal service we received. There is only about eight rooms total so it is a nice small hotel. The hotel personal helped us find good restaurants on the island. Told us about hidden away things to do on the island, and overall just took wonderful care of us. We cannot explain how perfect the entire experience was and how ‘above and beyond’ the staff treated us and the other guests that came and went during our 10 day stay.

Some comments on trip advisor mention restrooms/water closets. To us, the restrooms were fine. In fact, for a volcanic island, the toilet/shower facilities were great. Much more than we expected. Perhaps the travelers bothered by this have not traveled much on islands or in countries beyond the United States.

We hope to return to Heliotopos someday.. maybe for an anniversary celebration. If you want more info about our stay or things to do (and not do) in Santorini, google Tony and Krista Santorini. We will have a blog post about the trip that is open to the public starting in November 2009.

With hope that you get to enjoy Heliotopos,
us

Just came back from a four day trip to Santorini with my wife. We chose to stay at Heliotopos after reading some of the reviews on trip advisor .

Well simply there are no words that can describe the hotel , it's unique location and the professional servise you get from Mrs Lila and the rest of the staff of the hotel

Beautifull homemade breakfast, amazing sunset views from the highest point of the Caldera , endless hospitality are some of the attributes the hotel and it's staff have to offer . The staff really go out of their way to make you feel as comfortable as possible .You add all that to the natural beauties of Santorini island and you can have the perfect recipe for a romantic holiday

We had the time of our lives and we would certaintly go back again .

Heliotopos is a lovely small hotel with a great vibe. We stayed here for our mini-moon in July - booked it last minute and it was perfect for what we wanted - some chill out time, privacy, relaxation and sun. The staff are excellent-friendly, warm and extremely helpful. Our room was gorgeous - we were upgraded to a huge room with a beautiful balcony with a breathtaking view of the caldera - simply perfect for sitting and watching the sunset. Although it's not super-luxurious, there are really thoughtful touches throughout Heliotopos which make your stay really very special. It's quite a way outside Fira but there is a bus stop about 5 mins down the hill and the buses are fairly regular. The walk to Fira is around half an hour (downhill all the way) and taxis are cheap from town back to here, and handy late at night. There is a tiny pool at the hotel - but it's not really a suntrap so it can be quite cool - we spent most days at a nearby beach which was lovely. All in all a lovely stay in a gorgeous place - we'd definitely go back.

We just got back from Santorini and we had a wonderful vacation at Heliotops Hotel. The hotel location is great, right on the top of the cliff and close to Fira. The stuff (Lilia, Stella, Yiotta and everyone else) are very nice to us, especially to our 4 year old son. All of us would like to go back in the future.

So everyone knows that New Yorkers are hard to please.
Well I thought long and hard before I wrote this review and I could not find a single thing that I did not like.
I simply loved the experience. I loved it from the minute I stepped foot in the hotel and I walked outside and admired the view... It was breathtaking, it was too much to handle 400 meter cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea as the sun is slowly setting while one can actually smell the sea and the island. I was in awe.
That first impression has stayed with me and I still go to the website every now and then to go through the pictures or check the view live form the webcam...
On top of that I was welcomed by the friendliest of people. Happy, with sunny dispositions and always willing to help.
Next year is too far ahead for me to make plans just yet but I am very seriously considering going back :).
Thank you Heliotopos for this magnificent experience

Having the personal touch that Heliotopos hotel offers and puts so much effort in doing it makes you love this place. I would like to congratulate Lila, Yiotta, Stella, and other staff members in the hotel for having a nice smile on their faces, if other hotels know how much that is worth they will create a smiling department to host their guests. Of course that's aside from their massive efforts in talking all day to every single guest whether it's trying to accommodate or help them with something they need help with. Food is impeccable, and myself and my wife (and our friends) are foodies, we love and appreciate good food. Rooms were spotless and very unique. The View is one of the best in Greece not just Santorini. Finding a good service oriented hotel in Greece is not easy, so without a doubt we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for good service and a great place to stay at in Santorini. Thank you Heliotopos hotel staff for a wonderful 3 night vacation.

Take Care,
Omar
