Owner description: Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

I was lucky enough to spend two glorious weeks in Santorini in the spring of 2014. I took the hike to Skaros Rock twice while I was there and am disappointed that I didn't do it more. The first time I went, the end of April, the wild flowers were in full bloom and absolutely breathtaking. There are a lot of steps but take your time. There is a beautiful church on the far side just down a bit from the path. The views are incredible and is well worth the effort.

“Only visit if you're not afraid of heights”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Definitely picturesque and it takes about an hour to access it from Imerovigli. The paths are well trodden but there are no proper steps in place unlike the more touristy sites.

The view beyond the rock is amazing - the famous white church is at the bottom of it.

“Don't miss this lovely walk”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

We stayed at the Chromata Hotel, and the Skaros Rock was fifteen minutes away by the foot path. We walked it on a lovely spring day, a light breeze blowing in from the Cretean sea, daisys and other wildflowers sprinkled along the path. The rocks were spectacular, mostly the red pumice stone. A few people had written some funny statements in chalk on a couple of the rocks, they made good places to pose for photos with expressions like "mid-life crisis" and "this way to Athens". The most stunning of all is when you round the crest and see the monastery at the water's edge. Truly a beautiful experience.

“Breathtaking views”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

The views from the church at the bottom of rock were absolutely breathtaking. The hike itself was quite easy, but the way up can get tricky if you take the smaller routes (some nettles and lots of spiky plants).
