Owner description: Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

Go up before sunset and watch the sun go down. Feels like you are on top of the world. Besides being excellent exercise the panoramic views in the day are so amazing, the best pictures of our trip to Greece!

Breathtaking and a must do! Steep cliffs with gorgeous views down. We climbed it on a hot day and found it a bit strenuous but very worth it.

I highly recommend a hike out to the rock to see the breathtaking views of the caldera. My husband and I enjoyed it so much that we went twice. Going out is fine because it's all downhill; coming back is a bit of a trek up many many stairs, but it is worth it. If you keep following the path to the backside of the rock, continue going down to a classic white church that's perched on the side. Really cool!

Keen walkers, hikers, and climbers will be drawn to this peak in front of Imerovigli. They will have to climb up it, because "it's there!". BUT for a lot of others I say don't bother. Why?

Well for one it is yet another reason to clamber down lots of steps from Imerovigli before you even start on Skaro's steps. In fact, whilst I would say you can do the walk up and down Skaro's itself in less than half an hour, when you factor in getting down and back to the town it will have taken you more than an hour. Secondly, whilst the views are fantastic, you will most likely already know before you set eyes on this peak that views on Santorini are fantastic everywhere you look. Thirdly, don't even think about doing it in flip flops or indeed anything similar. Because you just won't get to the top. The last bit is treacherous. I had good trainers on. The rest of the climb is fine, fairly easy, but when you get to the main peak itself it becomes more serious and is one that requires thought, placement of hands and feet in the right places etc. Proper rock climbing. I chickened out because I was on my own. You climbers go in pairs and you will be in your element.

So yes it is there to climb, and is another fabulous viewing vista, but if you ain't prepped up for it take your snaps at the bottom, I'm sure that no one will notice you didn't go to the top if you plan your angles right!

Don't visit this the day after hiking Imerovigli to Oia the day before. Lots of steps but lovely view our hotel overlooked this and it was always pretty quiet.
