Owner description: Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

Decent shoes are a must as the path around the rock has some gravel in parts. Great photo opportunity at the little church down the front towards the caldera. Walking back up all those stairs is great fitness for a holiday where you're doing a lot of eating and relaxing!
If you can drag yourself out of bed by 8 or 9am this is absolutely worth the views and you may be lucky enough to be alone or only pass a few people on your way.
When you come back up from the rock there are many options for walking back along the caldera, so you can explore the maze of paths if you like.
One nice place to check out is another church which hangs over the edge of the caldera. You can see it from Skaros Rock and no one was there when we went around 9am. I'd suggest just stopping here if the idea of all those steps is too much after all that Greek food!

Walk out onto the rock, and around onto the far side to visit the church clinging to the rock face.
Go before the sun gets onto the rock for a cooler walk

When you see the Skaros from the sea, then you understand how high all the rooms are in Imerovigli. We walk on Skaros, and "Dam" I didn't know that climping on the top needs really climping skills :)

A fairly easy walk, just take some water if going in the heat of the day. Offers spectacular views from the very top. As a hint, go right to the top until you think you can't go any further, you will see what looks like a sheer piece of rock and no way up. Then look to your right and there is a better wall to climb with handholds and footholds. Still not easy but by no means hard. Getting to the very top not recommended for the elderly or overweight.

We had been staring at the rock from our hotel and restaurants and we were determined to climb it after seeing people on the top. One morning we set off quite early and made our way up. There are a lot of steps down to the path but the path up the rock is quite easy and leads to some amazing views.
Disappointingly, we were unable to get right up to the top. There is a sheer rock face very close to a scary drop and we couldn't see a way that the people who we had seen on the top were able to get up there.
The hardest part of the walk was climbing the stairs back up to the caldera path but you can't take it as easy as you need to and overall I think the walk is a possibility for most people.
