“Very Average hotel”
Reviewed 13 December 2007

We stayed in Artemis Villas in September 07, having spent 10 days in some charming hotels in the Greek islands. This was the most expensive out of all the hotels, and without a doubt, the worst. On arrival late in the evening, we got dropped by our taxi near the hotel, as the road was too narrow for him to go any further. We then had to search for the entrance, in the dark on a quiet road.

Our room was not clean, there was a crack in the window, and when we went to reception to ask to be moved, it was closed for the night (approx 9.30pm)
There is a stunning view, but this is not enough to salvage this hotel. I would never return here.

Before reading this - everyone has their own opinions and as a holidaymaker who is paying a lot of money to stay in a place that they consider is ideal for them, you would expect to get what you pay for. However, these problems should have never occured and therefore Hoteliers should take on board what customers want. Health and Safety is obviously not an issue here in Greece...

Having been to Santorini a month before and stayed in Fira. We decided we loved the island so much but wanted to relax more, so we looked at accommodation in Imerovigli, thought it would make a nice change. We were offered what they described as a Superior studio with newly refurbished marble jacuzzi bathroom.
Firstly, we emailed and double checked before we left if they would arrange for transport to pick us up from the airport and when we arrived, there was nobody around to meet us. We went out of the airport to look for a taxi, but none to be seen. We phoned for a taxi and they said it would be 30 minutes, so we waited. An hour later they turned up and dropped us off by the Maltese Church. I then had to search for the Artemis Villas as I was not familiar with the area and eventually found it next to Vallais, in which then realised that Artemis was next door. (the sign was hardly visible).
The reception was down so many steep and narrow steps that I was wondering if my wife would find this a problem. The reception area was a small pokey office with a curtain drawn across a doorway with two people standing around. They didn't understand English, but then phoned Angela to speak to me. We were then shown to our room and the luggage followed some time later. However, as soon as we walked up and down so many steps to the room, the phone rang and it was Angela asking us if everything was OK? I said let us get in the door first, then we can answer that question! She was quite blunt especially when I asked her why nobody met us from the airport and her reply was that she had emailed us the day previously to say they couldn't do it! I checked my emails and there were no messages!

The room decor was very basic and the layout of furniture wasn't exactly thought out. The wardrobe was behind a wall which was a narrow space between a kitchenette area and the bathroom, so it wasn't very practical. The two small windows were high up, so if you wanted to get some light into the room, you had to have the door open, but you couldn't see the view unless you took a few paces forward onto a small terrace. It is not exactly private. If you were to come out of the bathroom and walk to the bedroom area... anyone that is walking up or down the steps could easily see you especially if the light was on and to be honest, you needed the light on because it was so dark and claustrophic inside. The marble bathroom had areas of mould round the bath and the water always came up through the drain and flooded the floor. It was so slippery that we had to put towels down to prevent any accidents. No way was this a newly refurbished room. We spent our first night in the bed which was nothing more than a well used mattress placed on a concrete slab. There was no protector, just a badly non fitted sheet placed on top and all we felt the springs digging into our bodies. The following morning after trying to locate Angela to sort this out. She immediately dismissed our disappointment with the situation and again had an answer for everything - the bed is new, but we will change it for you. Later when we arrived back from having breakfast out somewhere, we saw them swapping the mattress from a studio next door. Amazing to see that the mattress had a large hole in it!!

The deck small deck which has a wooden floor has a glass surround so the view was not obstructed. The pool was a plunge pool. (None of the pools are heated, but it is quite nice to dip in to cool off if it is hot). The view from here was definitely the better view, you are higher up and opposite Skaros Rock. We have been to Pegasus Suites which is 7 minutes walk away heading towards Firastefani and they are set back in the rock, so the view is restricted, but you still see the same old volcano!!
We were there to relax and even though we took breakfast out, upon our return, we found a photocopied note telling us that we were to vacate the pool area by 4pm as they wanted to decorate the area for a wedding that was taking place. This was hardly advance warning and there wasn't anywhere to go to lie down apart from our own room!

The 14 inch television was placed near to the ceiling, so even if you could sit up in bed to watch it, you would probably end up having to visit a Chiropractor with a neck complaint!

The Artemis Villas was certainly not what we expected and definitely overpriced for what it has to offer.

  • Liked — Location of the Artemis has the best view of the Caldera being so high up
  • Disliked — Rooms need serious updating and in need of quality for the price we paid!!

ANGELA,GREECE, Receptionist/Owner at Artemis Villas, responded to this review, 10 November 2007

In response to the traveler’s opinion posted on the ‘Trip Advisor’ website, 8 November 2007.

At the outset, we would like to point out that we do not normally respond to guest’s opinions posted on this site as we respect each and every opinion, but in this case we feel obliged to respond as there were some matters that made us feel bad…
This particular guest does not mention anywhere in his review that 7-10 days prior to his arrival, his spouse was in Santorini and she passed by our reception to inform us that she will cancel her reservation for medical reasons and hence not to apply our cancellation policies. Upon advice from myself that I would be charging a reduced cancellation fee, she advised that she will let us know in due course via email. (His spouse had already visited our hotel and reception and personally talked to me prior to their arrival!)
As the guest asserts, he requested transfer to the hotel, but outside the time limits that the travel agency provides to us for high season. I did advise our guest that I would do my best to arrange the transfer, I could not guarantee the transfer and if this was not possible he would have to catch a taxi.
Artemis Villas is a small family run establishment. In the reception that given afternoon my brother was on shift (who doesn’t speak fluent English) and our porter/bell boy (as we were expecting his arrival) to carry his luggage to his room.
I do not want to intervene in each person’s private tastes and preferences, but I do find it necessary to advise that this guest’s room had two balconies, two windows both with curtains, and the only certainty is that the room was very very clean (as cleanliness is our highest standard!) as we personally inspect daily (maid and management)
The guest asserts that his mattress was moved to the studio next door. Guests arrived at our Studio the same day. I personally went to the guests who were staying at the Studio, I asked whether there was any issue with the mattress, the advised with one word ‘perfect’. No one would have said perfect to a mattress with a hole and springs poking one’s back!
I am sorry if I tired you with such a long response and I am also sorry if I was blunt with our guest, (In all my years of experience, no one guest has ever advised me that I am blunt, but the exact opposite)
I thank you all.

Angela

We could not have been more pleased with our selection of Artemis for our 5-night stay in Santorini. We started our stay in the "basic" room, which while small (which should be expected at that price), was very nicely decorated, and had everything one could want, including private deck and small kitchenette. (By the way, the report by the Aussie about his room being too small, with the despicable reference to 'swinging a cat', is completely unjustified; I saw the room that writer stayed in, and it was quite commodious. If the Aussie needs more room than that, I would suggest that he book his next trip to the lovely Australian Outback.) I would note, however, that the "basic" smaller rooms have only double-size beds, which may not be large enough for comfortable sleeping for some couples; the larger rooms have queen-size beds.
During the latter part of our stay, Angela was so kind as to move us (without additional charge) to a larger room which was vacant and which had a queen-size bed, and that was very much appreciated by us. We also found Angela to be completely available and graciously responsive to all requests, and the rest of the staff also provided excellent service.
The sunset view from any of the Artemis patios is the best sunset view anywhere on the island. The only reason one would want to go to Oia to see the sunset is if one were not staying in Imerovigli. (For shopping, by the way, the town of Oia is much to be preferred over Fira -- offering a more charming locale, as well as much better, artsy shops.)
The wonderful thing about Artemis is that it offers very reasonably priced accommodations in Imerovigli, which is the best location on the island, but where most places charge more than what many travelers can afford. Also, having the kitchenettes as Artemis does makes it possible to purchase coffee and other food to eat-in at least for some meals; restaurant prices in Santorini are quite high, probably especially for Americans visting from anywhere other than NYC. And, what better place to enjoy morning coffee or early-evening wine and cheese (as we did every day) than overlooking the caldera and sunset at Artemis each day?
We loved it, and would choose Artemis again should we return to Santorini.

We explored much of Santorini during our stay and the location of Artemis Villas probably has THE best view on the entire island. Also good access to the trail to Oia. Realistically you need to drive to Fira from here.

The rooms are charming, but the beds are hard and the bathrooms are small. From what we could tell every room had its own deck...although some of the decks are not directly attached to the units.

The pool/sun terrace is nice, but the pool itself is very small and nothing special.

Service was very good, but not exceptional.

We arrived at Artemis just in time for lunch, Artemis arranged for pick-up at the airport, and we had a great drive up to Artemis through Fira and onto Imerovigli, my wife was not sure about our direction, but met at the mini bus by staff to carry our bags to our room, my wife was still not sure until walking down the stairs, not too many, and then she caught both the view and our superoir room all at once! She was in shock, did not where to look it was wild!.
The Artemis is well placed, with Fira a short walk along the cliff edge, with even wilder views as you walk on down to Fira, you can catch the local bus back or walk slowly.
We caught the bus to both the beach end of the island and then also to Oia at the other end of the island, Oia is well worth a days visit, a great place to relax away from the crowds.
There are a number of good restaurants close by, our fav was the affordable pizza place, about 5 mins walk down the main road, plus the Blue Note on the cliff edge.
Artemis has great service with cleaning and change of linen daily, Angela and staff are very helpful, we elected to buy our breakfast from the local supermarket each day, for use each morning while taking in the view of the caldera, the view and the sunsets are out of this world, once again you can use the same market for all your evening drinks on the balcony watching the sunset.
Imerovigli is a great spot, quiet, not as crowded as Fira plus a higher sunset viewing area, with a view up to Oia.

We arrived and were greeted by a friendly staff member that took us (and our luggage) down many steps to our generous terrace with its breathtaking view. Our room (the superior studio) was modest in size, but large enough for two of us; it was accurately described on the hotel's website. The bathroom also was reasonable with a relatively large shower (by european standards). The kitchenette provided all that we needed for storing and serving in-room snacks and drinks. Staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful, and rooms, bathrooms and terraces are spotless. The pool and deck, while relatively small, was large enough for the number of guests that chose to use it. Great value for the location and the views. We will recommend it to all of our friends.

it is a very nice place, the rooms are clean and it is very well located to enjoy sunset. it is 20 minutes or more walking distance from Fira (main town). The pool is small but refreshing after long days on the beach or driving around the island.

In my opionion the hotel is too expensive for the service that offers. it is true that the sunset from your balcony is amazing.

Angela was very nice.
