“What an amazing hotel!”
Reviewed 5 July 2011

Two weeks ago my husband and I had our first wedding anniversary and we decided to celebrate it by having a trip in one of the most romantic Islands of Greece, Santorini of course! We were looking for a hotel with great view for romantic moments at sunset time and with spa to relax… We finally booked at La Maltese Hotel and our choice was perfect! The Caldera view from every corner of the hotel was unbelievable and our suite was really big and comfort! I also have no words for the amazing veranda with the superb view! It was so romantic to stay there all day long…We stayed at La Maltese for one full week and we came back as different persons! We relaxed so much with the amazing spa massages sessions we had! Also I must say something that means a lot! We stayed in Santorini for one full week and except one day of sightseeing at Oia and other villages, we didn’t leave the hotel even for one drink at a bar…!!! We will never forget this trip and most of all we will never forget La Maltese because we’ll definitely visit it again and again and again!!!

Thank you very much Lamaltese !!

21st of May 2011, a very special day to me & my husband!
La Maltese Estate Villa offered a magical wedding reception to both us and our guests!
Stunning view of the caldera from the terrace, remarkable service, very friendly staff, excellent food and great music! Absolute magic!
We really want to thank all the staff and especially, Vladimir for all his help the days before and after the wedding and Nikos (the chef!) who created a gastronomic buffet!
Congratulations!

I ve been travelling to Santorini for ages.....and not only....
La Maltese is a superb hotel, luxury is all around you in an elegant way, full of small details that make the difference!!!
I stayed overnight after my sisters wedding party that took place at the hotel's terrace. the food was excellent, the service and staff remarkable, something rare nowadays in "luxury" hotels, as usually all staff working there think high of themselves!!!
lets sort things out, for all of you who are visiting Santorini island, wishing to stay in a traditional but upgraded place and are looking for "Hiltons" luxure. This is Santorini, and everything is small in Santorini, made of stone, plaster and cementitious material. so, if you are looking for an olympic dimension pool, you should either try a different hotel which is not upon the caldera rock, or even better for a different island!!!! Also, if you are looking for onyx marble instead of cement go to an Arabic country and stick into the hotel all along your trip. When judging a hotel you should always take into consideration the surrounding area!!!! i loved la Maltese and as an architect, i do believe the hotel was extremelly well designed and decorated!!! as for the humidity smell, that s the climate next to the volcano and inside the rock. Open up your window so the air comes in!!! this has nothing to do with the hotel's construction. these are things you should know when chosing a place built IN the rock (obvious in the website!!!), its common sense....
in conclusion, for people who know what to appreciate in a luxurious small hotel, LA MALTESE IS PERFECT. for tourists who have not even been in a hotel in their own country it is not recommended, visit your country first and tell me about humidity and smell, ie Italian hotels!!!!

***advice to the hotel: note on your website that its a small pool, according to Santorini's traditonal architecture, so that you avoid bad comments.....

Room Tip: caldera view!!!

Just returned from a wonderful 2 weeks in Santorini. We booked via a package tour company, and chose La Maltese as it was small, just 9 rooms, and had a pool. We booked a standard room, priced from €400 a night.
When we arrived the staff were welcoming  and friendly. We were given drinks and a run through of the island with tips on where to go and what to do. We were then shown around the hotel facilities.
The first disappointment was when we saw the "swimming pool". It was tiny, about 3 feet deep and 12 feet long. The location just cries out for an infinity pool, but the whole area around the pool was a bit shabby and tired.
Then we were shown to our room.
Words failed us to be honest and we were a little dumbstruck. The immediate impression was the terrible smell of damp. There was a plug in air freshener but it did nothing to cover it. The smell was horrendous when opening the fridge and cupboard next to it. Then we saw the bathroom. It would not have looked out of place in a 1970's squat. There was a dark wooden, wonky toilet seat, an open fronted shower (plastic head) and a minute sink. No storage and you couldn't leave anything on the floor as the shower water poured into the room and soaked everything.
The bed was on a mezzanine level set up into the ceiling and the staircase was an open slatted very steep wooden affair which looked, and was, dangerous.
I think they realised from our faces how disappointed we were, but we slept the night to see how we got on. There was a very high window with no curtain or blind so we were awoken early.
Luckily, when we asked about a room change the next morning Vladimer was really helpful, and we were able to move to the superior Caldera view room on the lower terrace.
Again the room was very basic indeed, the bathroom was downstairs, and again no curtains to keep out the light. There was a private seating area with a table and 2 chairs with a wonderful view.
Sadly we were only able to have the Caldera room for 8 nights, and then had to return to our original room. When we got back there was no water in the room at all. We had to ask at reception and clearly they did something as it came back on, but was cold. It ran out again mid shower. By this point we were a little fed up, my husband went to speak to Vladimir who, to his credit organised for us to go to an alternative hotel for a few nights until he had a different room available for us. We felt like we had time travelled when we saw our new hotel, bright, airy modern room, and the bathrooms were fabulous.
We returned to la Maltese to another standard non caldera room, which was larger, and the bathroom was marginally better. The shower still leaked and there was an unpleasant odour of drains, again. However, again there were issues with the water supply, intermittent, and cold. The people in the next door room had the same problem, also complained, and were told there was an issue with the water on the whole island! We knew this wasn't true has we spoke to the handyman and he went and did something and the water came back on!!

The food in the evenings was wonderful, if expensive. Breakfasts were good, service excellent, staff superb....but....

All in all we were VERY disappointed with the rooms. The whole place looks very tired and shabby and could do with a spruce up. Granted the view is wonderful, but when you are on holiday you want to be able to have a decent shower. We think that for the money there are many better options.

The hotel needs investment, or you need to charge less. Value for money is poor.

We would not recommend this hotel unless there is some investment in the building and facilities.

Sadly we saw reviews in 2007 saying that the management are aware of these problems, but nothing has really been done to resolve them in the 5 years that we could see.

La Maltese is dated and tired I'm afraid, and we would not go back.

Very nice luxurious hotel on a fantastic Greek Island, however there are better resorts on Santorini than Imerovigli, which lacks the typical greek bar/restaurant culture that other resorts on the Island have in abundance.

The hotel itself was very nice indeed and had a real air of luxury to it. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive, they could not do enough to help us throughout our stay. We never ate at the restaurant at night but the breakfasts were very good indeed. One word of caution though, the prices for drinks and food at the hotel were on the high side compared to other bars and restaurants in the local area.

The hotel bedroom was very nice and extremely comfortable (even the rooms without the Caldera view) however the bathroom was a let-down for such a luxury hotel.

We stayed for three days of our honeymoon at La Maltese. This was a truly special place for someone looking for outstanding views, personalised service and just that special factor/attention that makes a stay away from home truly amazing. Vladimir, the Maitre de Maison, is an ultra professional, attention to detail person who is there to satisfy any desire. We have travelled the world extensively but the service we received at La Maltese is probably the best we ever found in several decades. Oh, and the breakfasts are unbelievable! Do make sure to ask for the orange juice made of Crete oranges, I guarantee you will never have had such a great juice! What can we say, when we return to Santorini we will be back to La Maltese. A 5-star in every sense.

We went in September 2010 for two weeks for our honeymoon and had an absolutely amazing time and couldn't have picked a better hotel on the island. We couldn't have asked for more, from the fantastic welcome from Samson and Emma on arrival (even though it was 11.30 at night), to the great room, stunning views, great service and spa. We enjoyed sunning ourselves on the terrace, with the enjoyable "experiment" or two from Samson. We had two meals in the hotel which were delicious and the spa is lovely, a nice way to end the day. Nothing was too much trouble, Emma and Samson were great and made it a really fantastic stay in great surroundings. Would definently recommend and hope to return.
