“Excellent...we recommend it!!”
Reviewed 10 October 2012

Our wedding day in Santorini was certainly the best day of our life...

Our stay at the hotel "La Maltese Estate" was like a dream. A combination of luxury, simplicity and traditional beauty of the island. From the beautiful terrace of the hotel we had a magical view: the sea changing colours according to the path of the sun, the little island of Thirasia, the volcano and of course the magnificent sunset..rightly called "unique" in the world. The service was excellent during our stay and the breakfast delicious.

Our wedding dinner at the "La Maltese Estate" was perfect: the food was delicious and the service impeccable! Our friends and guests (80 people) were delighted and very pleased... the kindness and the efficiency of the kitchen staff and the hotel managers were remarkable!

We would like to especially thank Mrs Giota Pottaki. She was responsible for the entire organisation. She accompanied us throughout the entire process with a great kindness and patience.

We will certainly enjoy another stay!!

Thank you so much,

Irini&Thomas

I am a wedding planner and I had a wedding in La Malteze Hotel.I had a last minute wedding and I had to deal with nice nd sweet couple but everything had to be arranged in a short time. Bare in mind that a destination wedding needs a preparation at least 9 months prior to the wedding date. From the first moment contacting the hotel, I received quick and accurate answers. My first impression was excelent and the contact person on behlaf of the hotel was Ms Giota Pottaki. She was so proffessional and quick, in her answers that I could not beleive it. I want to thank her beacuse of her responses I was able to get the wedding and organize in La Malteze a sucessfull wedding for my couple and its guests. Arriving in the hotel Mrs. Giota Pottaki and Alexandros (the hotel manager) was waiting for us and we discuss all the details about the wedding with us and the couple. We all shut down and we clear up all little detalis, wrote them down and we exchange our ideas with the couple. The day prior to the wedding all was clear to the couple and they have made all the changes they wanted. The hotel was informed and all new what was going to happen the big day (the day of the wedding). The couple was very happy and their families as well. The guests had started to arrive and the hotel staff was ready to welcome them offering welcome drinks, and helping them with their luggage. The next day everybody had breakfast and they were served in their tables with fresh coffee and orragne juice, nice pastries and if they wanted omelletes that was done upon their request. Everything went very smothly. After breafast the staff started to get ready the hotel for the wedding. Everything was on time, no delays. The couple, the relatives and their friends was thanking us for their beautiful wedding. I want to thank all La Malteze staff for their cooperation, friendliness and excelent serviced offered to my clients. Thank you Giota, Alexandre, Antelize, Marios (chef), Solon and Mr . Lefteris Antonopoulos, I hope to work you you again, you are an excellent team.

we celebrated our wedding at la maltese in August where we had 40 of our family and close freinds ... the location of la Mlatese makes it one of the most picturesque places you will ever experience as it is on the cliff facing la Caldera ( volcano)

we stayed for a week and felt like home away from home .. everyone of the staff was welcomimg and couldnt do enough to make our day an even more special day .. our guests were very pleased with the whole atmosphere and we even had the best fireworks ever as our wedding day was also the day of the volcano celebrations .. in all beautiful setting , beautiful sunset , perfect buffet and very nice staff .. Santorini is a very special island for us and all the Staff from La maltese made it even more special ...

We believed the pictures here and on the other booking sites (such as booking.com) and booked a Honeymoon suite which was on a special offer with a 50% discount, 2350 eur per week, but upon arrival discovered that the pictures were totally wrong and false. (in fact they were taken at the Master Suite which is way pricey, something about 10 000 eur per week) We reported this to reception and were told that they are not responsible for putting correct pictures to the internet, what was obviously an example of lying to client's face!

The area of the Honeymoon suite as indicated on their site should be 45 square meters, but in reality the room turned to be so small that it looked more like a cage than a suite. If you open your bags you won't have a place to step around. The general condition of the room was awful. Everything was either broken or tired. The bathroom looked like a vault with naked concrete (!!) walls, the bathtub was ancient, with rough and scratched surface, it wasn't even able to keep the water, which was leaking through the tap, and the bad smell from the drain followed us everywhere!

We complained about all the problems we faced and were promised to move us to different rooms during the period of our stay. Given that we were preparing for a wedding, that was very difficult and uncomfortable for us, but at this time we had no other choice, cause it was better to move to other room than to let our wedding dresses absorb the stench of the drain.

In total we moved twice, first to the room with shared pool and then to Master Suite - the only decent room in the whole property. However even that room had the same problems as previous: bad smell (not so strong, but it was still present), rusty and broken doorlock we were constantly struggling with, and the general sensation of tiredness and decay. We travel a lot and stayed before at different hotels members of Relais&Chateaux around the world, and got accustomed to highest standard of stay and service, and the feel of luxury we have always been having. Here there is nothing of it.

But one thing terrified us even more than other: the world slowest service. They don't offer a buffet-breakfast, so you should choose dishes from the menu instead. But then you will have to wait 5 minutes for the waiter to serve the table, then 5 minutes to bring some drinks, then 15 minutes for everything else. They were always incredibly slow and were always forgetting something of the order we made. We complained but no measures were taken. As to me, all the kitchen staff except of the chef should be fired immediately!

Next. Regarding their so called special offers. Our special offer contained a bottle of wine upon arrival, complimentary dinner, and 30 minutes of massage in spa. First two were awful. The wine was the cheapest one you could find around the island, and the dinner was simply the worse one we had during entire our stay on the island. Only the massage was more or less decent.

If you expect to enjoy the stunning caldera or sunset view, my advice is to look for a better place! The hotel is surrounded by unfinished conctruction works, an empty dirty bathtub on the foreground and the poles with power wires in the background are able to ruin even the best photo.

All the areas of the hotel is so ridiculously small! The pool is 2 by 3 meters, then there are a few square meters in front of the bar, the lobby (which is the most renovated place of the entire hotel), and the small terrace. That's all!

And the last and most important thing. Our wedding. We contacted the hotel way in advance the date, entered into the process of preparing and arranging everything we may need for our special day, but even here faced a lot of delays and troubles and departed to Santorini still with many unprepared things and questions!

For example I wrote to their sales manager Mrs. Giota [--] asking some questions about the cake, fireworks and so on. There were several times when I got a response only after been waiting for more than a week! One time I lost patience and called her asking what's wrong and received a perfect excuse: We are sorry for delays but we have too many wedding to prepare for! But excuse me, what then was that I was doing with you all that time? if not preparing the wedding? That was a bright example of lack of professionalism of the staff. There were many other examples of that, I don't want to describe them all, just would like to focus on really outrageous ones. Could you imagine, that the hotel that is offering wedding ceremonies doesn't have even a wooden arch or tent? They asked me 850 euro for only the chairs for 20 guest, glass of champaign and a ceremony table. When I asked about a wooden arch or tent, mrs. [--] answered that renting of the arch will cost me 150 euro, and constructing of the tent will be about 1200 euro. Finally they agreed to "gift" me the arch but I advised them to keep their paltry gifts and finally decided to arrange the ceremony in front of one of a countless churches of the island, in a really fabulous place.

The case with the arch was just a really good example of their wish to make money on everything, on every single detail that already should be included in the package especially given that they state they are providing full range of services for weddings.

But the worse surprise we received after the day of our wedding which honestly was more or less decent only due to our own efforts. Mrs [--] told us one day before the ceremony that the cost of transportation service (a bus for the guests) from the hotel to the place of the ceremony will be 130 euro. We were REALLY surprised when in the final bill we found that it was 130 euro per way! But there was also the cost of waiting, additional 80 euro we were completely not aware of! In total this so called transportation costed us 340 euro! This is 4 times higher than with other companies around the island. This regards to other services they offer as well. I asked Mrs. [--] about the reason of choosing this company and received a nice answer: I trust this company! Well, I suppose that here it is about a case of corruption, some kind of kickback they receive afterwards. This is the only explanation of 4 times higher prices for services they offer.

My general opinion and conclusion. The whole property is tired and is in urgent need of complete renovation. The relation of quality to price is the worse one we have ever seen, cause everything in the hotel is extremely overpriced. We have chosen this hotel relying upon the reputation of Relais&Chateaux, but we never expected that this place has nothing to do with it. There is no luxury, there is no service, there is only wish to make on you as much money as possible.

If you look for a nice vacation and wedding look somewhere else. This place has nothing to do with luxury and relax. For 2350 euro per week you get only worries and troubles.

The only light spot in the total darkness was receptionist Adelina - a very nice, friendly and helpful girl. She honestly was trying to make us feel better.

Room Tip: Avoid this place at all costs. This is the only advice.

The hotel staff are very nice & helpful. Our luggage was lost at the airport (stuck in Athens during transit.. If u traveled via Athens airport, though u checked through your luggage, you'll need to claim it and went through customs then reload them again) and the hotel staffs brought them for us the next day without charges.

Breakfast was superb. Best breakfast & very nice view at the balcony.

Private spa was nice, with steam, sauna, and jacuzzi.

The room was quite small and shabby compared to the price, but we spent most of the time outdoor and enjoy the view at the balcony instead.

Very simply stated, this is not a LUXURY hotel and surely not worth the price of the rooms. Stay here only for the best sunset view in all of Santorini or better yet, stay somewhere else and come here for drinks or dinner at sunset. If you are expecting a five star hotel, forget it. The woman who works the front desk is amazingly helpful but that is it as far as service goes. The hotel is getting really run down from all the weddings. The photos on the website are wonderful but don't show the dirty empty hot tub on the terrace, the broken sunning chairs, the power lines over the sunning beds, the empty buildings on either side, or the empty pool with old furniture next to the bar where that amazing photo of the bar and pool was taken from.
