“Villa Armena - WOW!!!!!”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

Villa Armena Relais and Beauty Farm (hotel) - It isn’t possible to convey what a delight it was to stay at Villa Armena. We were treated like family by Edoardo, his wife Elena, and Edward’s mother, the incomparable Laura! We arrived early one afternoon after a drive from Roma. The drive to the villa from the main road is absolutely stunning. You’re surrounded by Tuscany, literally and figuratively. The drive was a joy and one we would do a few times each day as we went about exploring the fabulous countryside. We were met by Edoardo and led to our room, which was spectacular - comfortable, warm, and large with a bathroom fit for a king. It was so lovely I was concerned they had showed us to the wrong room! Our stay there was the high point of our two-week trip to Italia in early June 2013. The villa is on a hilltop that is so peaceful, tranquil, and beautiful that you lose track of time. You can sit at some tables and look out over the hills and valleys. We could see the Abbazzi de Monte Oliveto Maggiore - we had the pleasure of attending Sunday Mass there, during our visit. We spent hours driving around the hills of Buonconvento, getting lost here and there and discovering sights and sounds that will be with us forever! The villa itself is a stunning place with grounds to match. But what was most enjoyable about our stay was the villa’s staff. So warm and friendly, always willing to help. In fact, Edoardo set up a lunch for us in Montalcino that was just spectacular. He gave us driving directions and finished with his usual flourish of “… it couldn’t be easier…” and he was right, as usual! We’ve had the good fortune to stay in some spectacular hotels around the world, but none compares to our experience at Villa Armena Relais, not even a Four Seasons hotel. This is a truly special place run by truly special, warm, inviting, fabulous people. It goes without saying, but let me state if for the record, we highly recommend staying at the Villa Armena Relais. Forgo your thoughts of staying anywhere else in the region. The Villa is the place to go; you will be delighted you did! However, I’ll warn you there is one significant downside to staying at the Villa Armena Relais...leaving. Although our departure was handled as smoothly as our arrival, we left with the same pain one has when leaving family after a wonderful visit. In fact, my husband wanted to forgo our visit to Venice in order to stay at Villa Armena longer! We recovered from our sad goodbye, but only well after Firenze on our drive to Padua. We miss Edoardo, Elena, and Laura. We look forward to returning to Villa Armena Relais again, again, and again.

Villa Armena (dinner & wine tasting) - Since we had just driven from Roma the day we arrived we thought it wise to just eat at the Villa’s restaurant to make things easier on us. We had experienced some spectacular meals during our stay in Roma and at our lunch in Orvieto. We could not imagine how any meal could top those. In fact, we said to ourselves, "Let’s just eat here tonight and then we can explore other restaurants in the region the other nights of our stay." The restaurant, like the rest of the villa is just beautiful and creates a soft, warm, inviting atmosphere for you to enjoy some of the most wonderful meals you will eat while in Italia. At our first meal we were treated to some of the best food we had during our visit to Italia. Nadia, the chef, puts out dishes that bested the two Michelin-starred restaurants we ate in during our trip. Villa Armena offers truly amazing cuisine! We also had the great fortune to meet Federica and Laura. Federica was the most warm and attentive server. It seemed like she knew just when we were ready for the next course. She was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, which allowed her to make some wonderful recommendations. Her English was impeccable and she and Laura were both more than willing to teach me and my husband more Italian, which was a joy. Laura, the sommelier of the villa, was a real treat. We benefited from her incredible knowledge of Italian wines and felt her passion for serving her guests at each and every meal, to include breakfast. Laura provided us a recommendation of a Brunello di Montalcino with our meal and that began our new life-long passion for Italian wines. She took great care to listen to what we wanted in a wine and then explain the various wines she recommended for us. We went to bed that night deliriously happy being at Villa Armena, and that experience was replicated each and every day of our stay.

The next morning we had our first experience with breakfast at the villa. We were not expecting much, and again we were stunned with the service, the selection, and the food. The villa put out a lovely buffet spread across several tables in the dining room for breakfast. We were led to “our table” and had a slow, relaxing time eating a nice breakfast of fresh cured meat, hard boiled eggs, cheeses, breads, freshly squeezed fruit juice, assorted fruits, and coffee. There was also a breakfast menu of foods made-to-order, but we were more than content with the buffet.

We also had the distinct pleasure of having a wine tasting with Laura; what a treat. She is wonderful, so full of passion for what she does. We learned some lessons about local wines, Montalcino in particular, and of course, the wines of her beloved Piemonte - the Barolo! Laura, we miss you and think of you often as we drink our Brunello di Montalcino, our Super Tuscan, and our Barolo!

We stayed in this hotel as part of our honeymoon.
We were expecting this to be our highlight moment. Fail!
Despite Tuscany will remain the highlight of our honeymoon, Villa Armena failed to deliver on it's promises. Upon arrival we were impressed by the location and the hotel itself. It is a wonderful old building rebuilt with a modern taste.
The owner greeted us by offering a glass of wine...which we ended up paying 15$ a glass. Talk about a memorable greeting!
The room was outstanding and very modern for such an old building. Nothing to complain there, but at 335 euros a night (breakfast included), it was expected.

However, it turned out not to be a very welcoming, cozy place.
the restaurant served okay food, but was very dark, with no view and no ambiance. It was also very expensive for what was offered.. there are much better options for food (and sorry to say lodging) in the region.

The pool, on a good note is outstanding with a view of the picture perfect Tuscan scenery. It would have been even better if the pool was heated as the temperature was cooler during our stay.

it is a bit out of Buoconvento, and very difficult to access by a dirt road, specially when it is dark at night and you return from visiting the region.

It was nice, but we think for the price you pay, you could find somewhere with more convenience or more charm elsewhere.

Since our visit last June, to our surprise, the hotel became part of the small luxury hotels of the world.

Dear martinlessard good morning,

and thank you for your review of Villa Armena.
We are always grateful when a guest takes the time to write about his/her own experience with us.
Having said that we are a little bit puzzled by your score of 3.
You wrote that you were impressed by the locatron when you arrived.
You wrote that the Villa itself is a wonderful building.
You described the room AND the pool AND the view as outstanding.
Your only criticism is for the alleged "darkness" of the restaurant. ("Darkness" that we like to refer to as romantic atmosphere actually.....).
So really I'm not sure I understand where the problem is.

On a different note: you are right, a couple of weeks ago we have become a Small Luxury Hotel of the World and of course we are very proud and excited to be part of such an important brand. I'm sure you will be very pleased to know that this year we have also won the "Stanze Italiane" award, an extremely prestigious award given by the famous "Touring Club italiano". And to top it all off our restaurant, Il Sorbo Allegro, after only a little over 1 year of trading, has been included in the famous Bibenda Guide (the guide to the best wines and restaurants of Italy of the Italian Association of Sommeliers) for 2014. With the highest score of the whole of the Montalcino area. Isn't it fantastic ?

Anyway thanks again for yor review, we hope to be able to welcome you again very soon, I promise we will putmore candles on your table this time :-).

Kind regards

Edoardo Giacone

Spent 3 nights with entire family (7). Eduardo, Elena, and Lara could not have been more accommodating. Renewed our vows in lovely setting with family all around. Had magnificent wedding feast. Breakfasts in the restaurant were wonderful. The interior details of the house were tasteful and magnificently detailed. Every room we had was lovely. This is a gem of a hotel hidden away in the countryside. Was perfect for family but would be perfect for couples getaway as well. Everyone loved it. Hope to be back some day.

We started our Italian Honeymoon with a three night stay at Villa Armena, and we are so glad we did! Eduardo and Elena greet you at the door, and are so friendly and helpful from the beginning to end, but they also let you have your space which is nice as well. It's best to have a car, as the nearest town, Buonconvento is not within walking distance. The Villa, the grounds and the rooms are all elegant and comfortable, and very clean. It was too cold outside for us to use the pool, but it looks amazing! We were on day trips for lunch, but the breakfast spread was extravagant and all the delicious items are made on site, and the dinners we had at the restaurant were some of the best and most memorable meals we have ever had. We had fun with Laura, the lovely wine expert at our dinners and her recommendations were perfect! The location is great to make day trips to the beautiful towns and cities in the area, Florence, Siena, Montalcino, to name a few. We also visited some wineries in the area and picked up a few bottles to bring home with us. We would not hesitate to recommend Villa Armena and would love to visit again!

We stayed at Villa Armena for 4 nights and fell in love with Tuscany here. Villa Armena is the most welcoming and hospitable place we have ever stayed. Eduardo, Elena, and Laura went out of their way to make us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble for them.

The food in the restaurant is superb, we ate here every night and were extremely well looked after by Laura who guided us through the wine list, teaching us about local wines in the process.

Elena organised a wine tour for us in Montelpuciano and recommended a great thermal spa for us in Bagno Vignoni. The wine tour was absolutely fascinating and I'd highly recommend it for seasoned wine drinkers and complete newbies like us!

I'd say a car was essential for getting the most out of the local area as all the small towns are 30mins-1 hour drive away, but the local roads are very good and it was easy to navigate around. We visited Montalcino, Pienza, Sienna, Montelpuciano, San Quirico Di Orca & Bagno Vignoni during our short stay and we don't feel like we scratch the surface of what the area had to offer.

As the other reviews point out, the hotel is impeccably well appointed. We were luckily upgraded to a suite (room number 1) and had lots of room in the huge room, the bathroom was magnificent with a stand alone bath and huge power shower.

We couldn't of wished for a nicer place to start our married life, or nicer people to deal with than Eduardo, Elena, and Laura. We wouldn't hesitate to recommended Villa Armena to anybody travelling to Tuscany.

Room Tip: We had room number 1 (Orlando Di Venusto Suite) which was spacious, beautiful and peaceful.

We stayed for 2 nights and loved the hotel, the room and the very gracious and friendly owners, Eduardo and Elena and Laura. This was a perfect location for us as well to visit Montepulciano, Montalcino and Siena for winery visits and site seeing. The room was extremely nice and very modern and the customer service was on par with the top hotels in the US. Eduardo and Elena did suggest wineries to visit and were very helpful in scheduling appointments and with directions.

Definitely would recommend this hotel for a family stay, honeymoon, anniversary occasion or just to get away and relax and recharge.

Villa Armena is a perfectly appointed Tuscan getaway located right outside of Buonconvento and only 20-25 minutes from Montalcino. We truly had a lovely stay at the property and Eduardo, Elena, and Laura all went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. They also picked out some wonderful vineyards in Montalcino and Montepulciano for us to visit during our stay. As the property is only a year or so old, all the rooms are new and the bathrooms were impressive for American (let alone European) standards.

Because we did have some difficulty finding Villa Armena, here are some directions for those driving to the property. Traveling south on the road from Siena to Rome, enter into the small town of Buonconvento. As you approach the town itself, the town will be on your right hand side (the walls and a small tower are easily visible). There are two gas stations on the same road within the city limits. After the first station, make the next left hand turn (if you see a soccer field on your left hand side after making the turn you are in the right spot!). Go over the train track and continue on the road for about 3 minutes. There is a fork in the road – take the left (there is a sign that says Armena) that is an unpaved road. Proceed with some caution as this is a thin, winding road that is used for both ingress and egress. Continue on the road until you hit two dumpsters, at the dumpsters veer left. Although you will feel like you’re almost there, you will be on this gravely road for another 5-7 minutes or so. Continue past the burgundy gate and several homes. Villa Armena is at the end of this road.
