I have been going to Il Vescovino for longer than I often care to admit (since 1991). Over the years the place surely has changed but the past few years, under Mario and his team, the food has generally improved. This establishment, in the upper part of Panzano, is housed in a building that is said to date back to the 13th century. The interior is in the Chianti style, with an arched ceiling, wooden beams and terracotta tiled floor. However, the real gem is Il Vescovino’s terrazza panaramica which faces the Conca d’Oro and provides a truly marvelous view and dinning experience on a warm evening as the sun goes down. If you reserve, ask for the table in the TripAdvisor picture, and get ready to be mesmerized.
My wife and I particularly enjoy the fish main which is prepared in what I believe is a Neapolitan style, simple and carefully cooked. One needs to go a long way from Panzano to get better fish in Tuscany (i.e. Florence). The pasta dishes (particularly the lasagna, the eggplant and the fresh pasta with boar sauce) are top drawer, as are the beef carpaccio and steak Florentina. The wine list is good and fairly priced however, we have found the house wines to be quite satisfactory and super value for money.
In the past three years, we have spent in the order of 40 days in Panzano and eaten at Il Vescovino 7 times. It is the one place we look forward to eating at as the service, food and view are all but impossible to match in Panzano. We believe it to be the one eating establishment that should not be missed. Thank you Mario and staff for making our evening on 30 August so memorable.
