“great week at the alto”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

Have just got back from a week in the Altamadores apt in Peurto rico. I always read the reviews before I go and take little notice of the occassional silly remark. Most of the reviews were good so felt reassured before we went. We endured a 3 hour delay from Newcastle so got there a lot later than planned. However we went through passport control with noone ther! Result. We collected our bags got on the coach as got to our accomodation in the early hours. On arrival there was noone at reception at first, then a fellow appeared to check us in (with very limited English) however he did help us as best he could by showing us to our room. The room was very spacious and very well equipped tho not really needed as we were all inc. Now I read one comment which said the beds were the 'worst' ever slept in. Well sorry but the beds were fine they even has an extra mattress topper which was lovely. We found our way to the restaurant which was near our room (114). The selection of food was VERY GOOD despite comments complaining about the food. There was cooked food, continental choices. yoghurt, fruit, breads, cakes and pastries with jams, honey etc. The food at each meal time was good. Some days I wasnt keen on some of the stuff but that was down to my personal tasts. However there is no way I starved ( Iput on 3 lbs that week). The pool area was lovely and we did manage to get sunbeds. As usual the 'early birds' had the towels on the beds at daft o clock but this happens everywhere. What really imnpressed me was the bar. Everyday there were jugs of red/white wine and Sangria which were replenished all the time. There is a beer tap and best of all there were every type of spirit/liquers/mixers out on the bar for people to help themselves. We have been on many all incs. worldwide but have never seen this before, so well done to the alta. I read several reviews regarding Jamie G the entertainment chap. I take my hat off to him he works his socks off to organise events such as games/quizzes/bingo etc to try and please everyone. But there is always someone who has to moan isnt there. Come on give the man a break, he is a lovely chap and does a great job. Keep up the good work Jamie G. We were told that Gran Canaria is 'hilly' and wow is it. Its certainly a challenge to walk either down to the beach (lovely) or up to the Europa centre. We managed even though we are in our 50's. However the taxi service is brilliant and is cheap. If you have booked to go to the Altamadores please dont be put off by the less than complimentary comments. We had a lovely week there and would gladly return without hesitation. What some people need to bear in mind (namely the complainers) is your paying 2/3 star prices therefore cannot expect 5 star standard and you cant please everyone all of the time. I have been in very poor so called 4* hotels around the world and would defo not class the alta as one of these. It was great value for money so if your going there dont worry you will not be disappointed. PS there are refurbs going on but was not intrusive at all. Our room (114) was quiet with a lovely view and our own sunbeds on the terrace too).

Room Tip: Room 114 good however would have liked higher floor but good anyway

We stayed here the first 2 weeks in July and had an amazing time!! The hotel's public areas and our room were all spotless. The food was excellent and there was lots to choose from, my sons loved the BBQ nights. The staff worked extremely hard and were so friendly. If you needed anything extra all you had to do was ask at reception and it was provided for immediately - we had to ask for extra pillows and a camp bed for my oldest son as the couch was a bit short for him and I had read about this from a previous review. The help yourself bar was a great idea with no queues and nobody abused it. The entertainment was fab and Jamie G was brilliant, we loved the quizzes, water polo, and especially the bingo as we won 158 euros! We met lots of lovely people and made new friends! We enjoyed it so much we have booked to return next year!

Stayed at the Altamadores first 2 weeks in July. This is our second year running at this hotel & the second year we've all had a fantastic time. Hotel is spotless, food is fantastic & staff are so friendly & go out there way to make you feel so welcome. A big huge thanks to Jamie G, the hotel entertainer. Our 5 kids think Jamie is just the best & does a fantastic job at keeping the kids entertained, wouldn't b the same without Jamie. Booked up the day after we arrived home to come back next year & can't wait, we are counting down the days :-) met some great people at this hotel & a big thanks to all the staff.

Love the Scoltock Family

Just back from a brilliant stress free fortnight at this cracking hotel.

This was our fourth visit to this hotel with the last being three years ago. There are a number of changes going on and all good. Over the next 12 months the changes will be superb.

Fears for anyone reading about building work should be dismissed, There were a few workmen about but never once in the fortnight did they break the relaxing mood of the place. There was zero inconvenience.

Rooms were again spotlessly clean and change of towels regular (at least 10 times in the fortnight). Cracking view from the balcony. Beds now have a memory foam mattress which is a big plus. Overall the room was great. Air conditioning units mostly fitted so will be available throughout the hotel very soon. At present the ceiling fans still do a great job.

Pool area has just been fitted with astroturf - great idea as this makes it cooler to walk bare foot and takes away the chance of slipping. Pool clean and a good size.

Drinks - the self service bar again worked brilliantly, no queues and never exploited by anyone.

Food - I have always enjoyed the food here and again have zero complaints - the chefs do a great job in keeping the area stocked. Credit really has to go to the entire bar / catering team who are always very friendly and accommodating.

Jamie G looked after the entertainment and was excellent - a total professional who is first class with the kids. With the greatest respect on the previous animator a vast improvement - This guys personality fits in perfectly with the job and the location.

Evening shows were on the whole very good. - The bingo is a good laugh and well worth winning with between 100 and 200

The overall vibe of the hotel is what we like most. There is a good mix of Brits and Scandinavian's (probably 50/50). In all my times here I have never witnessed a crossed word.

Overall a top place to relax, eat too much, drink too much and generally just chill out.

We will be back again soon,

We have just returned from another fantastic break at this hotel. From start to finish you are made to feel so welcome... from the excellent bar/waitressing staff to those on reception who really cannot do enough to help. I asked for an extra fan for our room and it was there within a day at no extra cost. The rooms are spacious and clean and the cleaning staff do work so hard. The pool area is great. There is never a fight for a sun lounger and the self service bar is a brilliant idea. But I must say our holiday was made once again by the fabulous entertainment. Jamie G works so hard every day, interacts and has fun with everybody and definitely knows how to put on a good show. Thank you! We will definitely be returning again next year (this time on our honeymoon!) and look forward to seeing you all again!
