“Artistic, rural, spiritual”
Reviewed 24 May 2010

Thanks to the guidance by Beanie06 (below), we found the place easily. One slight correction: when you get to the T-junction in San Miguel (i.e. where you have to turn right from TF 65 to TF 82) the sign actually says "Granadilla" to the right. The "Teide, Vilaflor" sign will come later, after passing the Gama agricultural cooperative, where you have to turn sharp to the left, uphill.

We were two couples travelling and were given the "Casa Gato" apartman, with two separate bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, a kitchen and a terrace, all tastefully decorated in rural romantic style and with an artistic spirit (one of the persons running the complex is a sculptor and his sculptures are scattered around the finca). The place is run with a soul, friendliness, artistic touch. We particularly liked that they did not come to clean and change towels during our three-day stay (the opposite is a bothering, superfluous and boring tradition of the hotel sector). Unfortunately, we did not have the time to take part in the morning relaxation lessons (no extra charge). But even a short conversation with Maryam filled us with energy! Thanks for the tip to eat at Restaurante Playa Chica in El Medano!

We were there in mid-May and had to use double blankets at night (as it was around 10 degrees). Don't forget, you are more than 600 meters uphill, and since the house is rural, don't expect perfect thermo-isolation at the windows and the doors. Oh, and those having the road-side rooms, expect to wake up with the neighbour's rooster early morning:)

Just back from a week at Finca, was, in general, delighted with the accommodation.

* Found the direction difficult to follow in the dark. Follow the signs from San Miguel from the motorway, going up a winding mountain road, (get used to the winding!) the road takes you through San Miguel, follow it until you come to a T-Junction, take a right, to Villaflor, Teide etc. You will drive through the town and just beyond the town ( you pass farmer Coop- GAMA on the right-which by the way is the handiest supermarket for you) take the next left up a hill. After you climb for a minute or so there is a wooden sign (hard to see in dark on a road to the left. You will konw you are on the right road as ahead of you, down this road, is a large neon restaurant sign for Asador Il Portillo ( the finca entrance is directly opposite this restaurant.
* You need to ring a number (signposted on door) for someone to meet you and give you your key.
The apartments are well equiped with a lovely kitchenette, bath/shower and great balcony.
If you are going off season it is cold at night so bring warm pjs!
* There is no welcome pack of tea/coffee/sugar etc. so bring what you need. Towels, dishclothes/tea towels/washing up liquid are provided.
*There is a handy washing machine in the complex, €3 for a wash, just make sure you have 3 X euro coins! the restaurant across the road obliged me with change.
*You will need a car if staying at this accommodation.
Be sure to avail of a treatment from Amalia, she is a wonderful lady, who emanates healing energy!
*The pool and jacuzzi are indoors and a lovely treat.
*The common room has lots of books in its library, alot in German but a few in English. there is wifi available if you bring your own laptop but no pc access.

This place really is a find; a place of gentle tranquility in an otherwise harsh landscape.
This was our first visit to Tenerife and we were unprepared for the shock of the South, seemingly a lunar landscape crossed with a building site. It's stark and unsettling and it took us a week to get used to it.
Our flight didn't land 'till after dark and although the estimated time from the airport to the Finca is supposedly only about 15 minutes we spent ages trying to find the place and drove up and down the steep road through San Miguel several times until we realised it's out of town on the next level up and even then not well signposted.
Despite our late arrival a charming young staff member drove down to meet us and let us into our finca. There is little we can add to the reviews already posted ; The place was immaculately clean and well appointed with tasteful furniture and decor. The view from the terrace is fantastic both day and night. By day, just watching the cloud movement over the sea is thrilling but also lazing around over breakfast seeing the care and attention that goes into the market garden terraces just below the pretty finca gardens is magical.
Our one criticism was that it wasn't just chilly - it was cold. We were there the last week of Feb/first few days of March and were unprepared for just how cold it could be halfway up the mountain compared to the temperatures on the coast, hence, we spent a lot of time wrapped in the blankets off the bed.
A wood-burning stove would have been fantastic in the living room instead of the TV (which we never turned on) and the electric heater provided in the bedroom would not have begun to warm up the high-ceilinged, tile-floored living area even if we'd left it on for hours, not something we would have contemplated given the nature of the place anyway. Obviously during the warmer months this wouldn't be any problem but naive Brits like us assumed that the Canaries would be hot all year round!

If you want a morning challenge, walk up the road from the Finca's (turning left) for about 200 yards and then down the vertiginous hill into town to get your bread. The walk back up the hill would test the hardiest of hill-climbers but the views are spectacular. On one of these trips I encountered two local kids leading horses out of their garage to graze on the terraces opposite - country life still prevails.
Good places to eat are La Tasquita de Nino, situated in what's left of the 'old town' of San Miguel (which isn't much). It's in what used to be the 18th century post office/tobacco storage house and is a quirky, romantic setting with a very attentive patron who has filled you up with tapas and tasters before you even order.
A word of warning - Canarian portions were obviously designed to feed people who had toiled in the fields and unforgiving terraces for 12 hours and are therefore enormous with a portion of the wrinkly salted potatoes and basket of bread as standard so don't over order.
Also good and worth visiting is El Timon on Paseo Marcial Garcia, just beyond the boardwalk at El Medano where the garlic gambas are to die for!
Nice hanging out places too are Flashpoint in El Medano at the other end of the boardwalk - good for a beer or coffee and watching the surf dudes or, in the evening, Manfred's Soul Cafe which, sadly, no longer has live music but the chef sometimes does an accoustic set when he feels like it.

Finca Vista Bonita is located in a wonderful, quiet setting with fantastic views across the south coast of Tenerife. The apartment provided was of a very high standard with comfortable, firm beds, a full bathroom and lovely furnishings and the terrace was a sun trap through the day.

I would comment that there is not a full kitchen. A microwave and four ring hob is provided but not an oven. However, with an excellent asador restaurant over the road (grilled meats), there is an alternative. In addition, the restaurants of Golf Del Sur, Los Cristanos, Los Abrigos etc are a 20-30 minute drive down the hill.

You will definitely need a car as the Finca is 800 metres above sea level (2,500 feet) and the village of San Miguel is a 5 minute drive. There is a bus service close to the Finca but how frequent it is would need to be checked. The village has all requirements - an excellent bakers (open 365 days of the year!! - El Pan del Horno), a supermarket which stays open until 10pm, a chemist, medical centre, banks and newsagents (although English newspapers are not available - go to Golf del Sur for these).

One note of caution - as the Finca is high, it can be in cloud whereas the coast will be in sun. It is also a little cooler than the coastal resorts during the day and particularly at night and an electric radiator is provided for the bedroom. We asked for a second heater for the sitting room which was instantly provided. This advice applies probably to the winter months and I am sure that during the summer a slightly cooler evening helps with sleeping.

Most guests were either Dutch or German and the Finca is featured in a leading travel company's brochures for these countries. The communal facilities provided are good including a heated indoor pool (not large but good to cool off in), jacuzzi, gym (no running machines, very basic equipment), laundry area (washer and dryer - 3 Euros), a book library and free internet access (no pc provided, bring your laptop). The Managers/Owners speak excellent English and are extremely helpful and although I did not book, there are a range of spa treatments available including facials and massage. These seemed very popular with other guests.

Overall, we would return to the Finca but may look at coastal alternatives to guarantee full sunny days.

We stayed here after reading other good reviews, and we were not disappointed. Beautiful clean, spacious well equipped holiday apartment with fantastic views over San Miguel down to the coast from the well furnished balcony. The Finca has a lovely garden with a barbecue, sun beds and a swimming pool. We were the only English people there- there were at most a few very quiet German families and couples there, but generally we felt like we had the place to ourselves, swam on our own in the pool and sat out on sunbeds in private.
We hired a car from the airport- highly recommend that you get one, and spent most of our time in mountain villages and towns, and in Teide National Park. We had a great week, totally different from the common perception of Tenerife as a tourist Island. Highly recommend this property, and inland Tenerife as a whole..

I stayed here with my partner just before Christmas and I found the place excellent. The finca is about 10 -15 drive from the airport and El Medano beach. The fincas are set out beautifully in traditional Spanish style. There are a group of these tourist fincas that back onto some beautifully presented gardens with lovely views of the coast.. There is a small play area for kids and a BBQ. There is a communal area that includes a heated indoor swimming pool which is small but nice. You can book holistic treatments on site and as well as yoga class and some more activities like cycling or walking. We went with the acupuncture and massage treatments which were worth every penny. The whole vibe of the place was based are natural tourism and is a million miles form the tackiness of some of the Tenerife resorts.

Tenerife in general was beautiful; we enjoyed a drive to the top snow capped El Teide volcano and enjoyed a few lazy days watching the windsurfers on El Medano beach. We went to the surprisingly pleasant city of Santa Cruz. All in all it was a very relaxing holiday and I would definitely recommend the Finca Bonita Vista to family and friends. You will need a car.

Tips - The ficna is on higher ground so it can be cool in the evenings of December but during the day the temps were around 20c at there lowest, down on the coast the temps were about 25c even in December.

Think of Tenerife and visions of masses of high rise hotels and apartments come to mind.
But Tenerife is a Spanish island. Playa las Americas and Los Cristianos can hardly claim to be Spanish. The southern coast of the island is a vast multi-national swathe of mass tourism. If that’s your idea of heaven, good luck to you. Even Puerto de la Cruz in the north is giving way to the hoards of visitors from northern Europe.
If you’d like a flavour of Spanish life on a Spanish island there are places away from the hotspots to enjoy a more tranquil sojourn.
15 minutes from Reina Sofia airport is Los Cristianos, but also in the same time the charming town of San Miguel can be reached. A request for the Finca Vista Bonita to the taxi driver brought a shrug of shoulders and a blank look. But contact with his colleagues elicited the location. The road from the airport zig-zagged its way uphill for the 7 kilometres to the town followed by another kilometre round more bends to arrive at the Finca.

A finca is really a traditional Spanish farmhouse or country dwelling. Vista Bonita is actually a small complex of 14 apartments built in the traditional style – 11 one-bedroomed plus three two-bedroomed. Not as isolated as some fincas we were on the edge of the town and soon discovered a short cut to the centre down a steep street – that’s OK but coming back up is not for the less agile.
All the apartments have large terraces with stunning views over the farmland, town, airport and down to the coast. In the distance can be seen the outline of Gran Canaria. The siting of the terraces means the sun is captured for most of the day. Breakfast on the terrace under the blue skies and morning sun will remain in our memories for many a year. Sitting by the roadside outside the Finca is an elderly gentleman and his dog – a bronze sculpture – with a further statue in the grounds.
Facilities at the Finca include a small indoor heated pool; a massage room, gymnasium, a meditation room, and a launderette. The small lounge area gives the appearance of being the original finca but with the inclusion of a pool table. The furniture and fittings throughout are of the rustic type in keeping with the buildings. The kitchens are fitted with all appliances: microwaves, cookers, kettle, even an electric juicer.
For those wishing to integrate into the local life there are weekly Spanish lessons.
The Finca seems to be the only accommodation in the town for visitors. Thus a sprinkling of Spanish is useful in the bars and shops. However, most bartenders and check-out staff have a sprinkling of English.
Being about 1500 metres up from the coast means the temperature can be colder than the coastal resorts – disadvantage in winter, but probably an advantage in the summer.
For information on the Finca log on to www.finca-vistabonita.com. If you did prefer Los Cristianos, there is a sister establishment www.aparthotelneptuno.com/portada.htm - more modern style.
