“Fish Restaurant practically on te water”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

First time at Ali Baba after it was recommended to us by a number of people as the best restaurant on Buyuk Ada.

And we really enjoyed our lunch. The setting is lovely, practically on the water with great views.

The service is good & the food is delicious.

Though no baby changing area they were very accommodating in organising a makeshift baby changing area for us.

Enjoy

“Fish Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014

You will enjoy the "mezes (starters) and local fish in this restaurant. ( As in my earlier threads about the fish restaurants in Turkey, "always ask the price of the fish you choose", it is better to be safe than to be sorry.) Try shrimp and octopus salads as well as other Turkish mezes.

“Expensive but worth it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2014 via mobile

In the gauntlet of Buyukada´s seaside restaurant promenade, with offers and invitations enthusiastically extended from all sides, we sat down at Ali Baba. We expected a tourist trap but rather, we were served a dinner we will long remember.
Of course, you know it won´t be cheap when the owner guides you to the table, the starters arrive before you get the menu, and when a seasoned waiter invites you to inspect the ingredients before preparation. We had shrimps and octopus for starters, along with a few other local specialities. The grilled dorado arrived perfectly cooked, the crayfish as well, and the recommended Chardonnay was a wonderful companion. For dessert we were presented with local "Lokma" pastries, strawberries and various freshly cut fruit.
The bill settled on approx. USD 85 pp including drinks, refreshments and coffee, which is expensive by local standards. Still, we had great value for money. I was born and raised on the Atlantic coast, and I know excellent seafood when I get it. A true experience! And I have not yet mentioned the location, which is has a beautiful view, and the excellent and very pleasant staff.
Recommended, but be prepared to pay for it.

“Wonderfully Fresh Seafood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 December 2013

On our last visit to Istanbul my wife and I decided to take a trip to Princes' Island as the day started out sunny with a few clouds and the weather was fairly warm although it was December.

We took the public ferry and while buying the tickets were approached by one of the restaurant's staff where he aggressively (but nicely) advertised the place and left us with a card. After a long journey and a wonderful walk on the seaside at the island and after being approached by 20 or so restaurant proprietor and staff - including Ali Baba - we noticed that the best looking fish and the cleanest looking and most appealing was Ali Baba's. So we settled for it. We sat overlooking the water the sun was up gorgeous settings despite the simple decor.

I'm very specific about fish so I went to choose from their display. I must say there were lots to choose from so we opted for a nice sea-bass and asked to have it char-grilled. With that we ordered a plate of deep fried anchovies a plate of Antep Ezmesi the famous spicy (mildly in my book) veggie dip and a shrimp salad. Bread is provided by the heaps so don't bother ordering any carbs. The salads came first and while the Ezmesi was deliciously fresh and flavorful, the shrimp salad in contrast was very bland. The anchovies came next and they were nice. The star of the show arrived last, char-grilled and cooked to perfection the sea-bass was just amazing. It was very mildly flavored with salt and possibly a pinch of pepper and the only sauce provided were wedges of lemon, but it was just great. The best fish I ever had in Turkey. The service was excellent and they offered complimentary baklava, melon and tea. Skipped the sweets but had some fruit and tea. The bill was just under $90, not exactly cheap considering we had only water to drink but definitely worth the money if you skip the shrimp salad.

My advice on what to order there: char-grilled fish and maybe jumbo shrimp, deep fried anchovies, marinated anchovies in chili (tried elsewhere, delicious).
