“Worth It one time”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014 via mobile

Very historical church and if your religious you will feel something here. Unfortunately locals dont care for it that well and closed off holy water on the sides and its very small. We paid 30 us dollars for a round trip horse ride with foul smelling horses and driver. Takes you halfway you walk up the rest. Also must wear pants if a guy to get in. Great view though once your up here. Of course if it was a mosque they would 10xsize and remodel. But since a church just stays the same and wittles away.

“Not much solitude”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2014

The church itself is delightful, but getting there is not as you have to run the gauntlet of far too many horse-drawn phaetons and ineptly ridden bicycles. It is a brisk hour's walk from the ferry, longer if you dawdle and a steep climb from the phaeton drop point. The church itself has some great frescoes and views.

“Pretty church, littered landscape, horrible ride”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

Yes, the views from the Buyakada hilltop are lovely, the small church is sweet (if you're female and your knees are showing, be prepared to put on a cover-up provided by a mildly persnickety church person), and you can grab a quick snack while capturing the views on film. HOWEVER, the fayton (horse-drawn carriage) ride most of the way up the hill is terrible. We paid for the long tour of the island followed by the ride as far up the hill as the carriages are allowed to go. Our one-hour tour lasted about 35 minutes and took us past the horse stables, which are the cause of this terrible rating: They were filthy, cluttered with refuse, and generally foul. Additionally, many of the horses we saw at the starting point were not properly groomed and many appeared underfed. Although both of our drivers were gentle with the horses, the conditions in which the horses are kept are unacceptable. Of lesser concern, but worth noting, the landscape throughout the island--including along the route to the church--was littered with trash. While the history and architecture of Buyukada are interesting, I strongly recommend against the fayton ride. If you must see the church, be prepared to cycle and then walk at the point at which neither carriages nor bikes are allowed.

“Tiny”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

A tiny stone church, situated on one of the highest points of the island.Beautiful views of the island and the Marmara Sea from upthere.
The interior is beautiful painted.
The island is a piece of paradise, very quiet and peaceful. There aren't cars on the island, only bicycles and carriages.
