Through a Groupon voucher we found this paintball experience and it far exceeded my expectations.

It is easy to find and well signposted. The HQ is at the end of a long gravel track and there is a parking area.

On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff, Terry took our details and gave us the necessary forms to fill out and a secure box to put any items in that might got lost in the woods as well as a numbered dog tag. We then went to the store where we were allocated overalls and goggles which is a full face mask. The staff also suggested that I might like to have body armour (like a flack jacket).

We were told to help ourselves to free drinks and the choices were tea, coffee and squash and these were available all day.

Whilst we were waiting for other participants to arrive we chatted to other staff members Tin Tin and Jesus who were our marshals for the day. They explained how things would work and gave a thorough safety briefing and demonstrated how the guns worked and also the options to upgrade to other guns as well as opportunities to purchase gloves, smoke grenades and flash bangs.

They had a great system for purchasing items, each person had a sheet with the dog tag number on it and during the day as you bought additional paint balls or food this was added to your bill and you paid at the end.

When everyone was ready to start the first game we were divided into two teams and given a red or blue arm band. We all had to pass through a gate where our goggles were checked and we were handed a gun to which we added our paint ball container. You then got to try the gun on a firing range to get used to it.

We were then taken to the first area and the rules of engagement were explained. In short the teams were put at either end of a wooded area and the idea was to take over the opposing teams HQ. There were trees for cover and you had to move forward without getting shot, once you were hit you were out and had to move to an area outside the firing zone.

After the first game was won we made our way back through the gate, handing in our gun but removing your individual paintball container.

During the day we played a number of different games each time returning for a rest and refreshments. We also booked lunch which cost £3.50 and consisted of a freshly cooked sausage and burger in a bun to which you could had salad and sauces. There were picnic style tables to sit at.

The toilets were pretty basic, the kind you find on a building site.

You need to be reasonably fit as you do exert yourself and need to be able to run in bursts.

If you do get hit by a paint ball it does sting and it causes a bruise but that is all part of it.

Non combatants can wait by the seating area and one Dad came through to the games to take photos but had to wear goggles for safety.

It is an excellent day out (9am to 4pm) and very good value. We paid £38 for two people which included everything already described.

Go and try it and get stuck in!
