We were very much on the look out for a place to get away from it all and this hotel certainly hits the spot. We did our homework and the Wheatsheaf certainly had all the right reviews. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, showing concern and ascertaining if we'd had an evening meal as we were arriving post 8pm. Our first impressions were of how nice and quiet it was - hardly surprising I suppose with only one or two cars going by every half hour or so; there is literally no background noise at all (apart from the sheep of course !), lovely. Our room had a great looking four poster bed and was nice and clean, although the décor was not new it was tasteful and totally in keeping with the property and ambience in general. The bar and outside area is a nice social place and we enjoyed the company of other guests and the very friendly staff - as well as an extremely friendly black cat called Tinkerbell who lived across the road and insisted on saying hello to everybody. As has been mentioned by other reviewers a walk across the fields from Carperby to Asygarth Falls is an absolute must - take snapshots of the ad-hoc map on the wall in the hotel (the staff will show you where it is). Even though the weather left a little to be desired while we were there it just added to the character of the Dales in general and a light raincoat and good walking shoes saw us there with no issues at all after about 35-40 minutes. The breakfast was cooked to order (vegetarian options available) and very tasty and we also enjoyed an evening meal. As with most places in the Dales you really need a car to get around and definitely to get to Carperby, this will only be amplified in periods of bad weather or seasonal variation. WiFi was available in the main seating area but we had a few snags logging onto it during our stay which the owner was looking into.

We had read good reviews about this hotel. It was clean, bedroom nice and bed was comfy. Staff had no rapour at all. It seems they didn't want to talk to you, just take your money. We were dissapointed in the way we were treat. Needless to say we will not be going back.

Thank you for taking the time to review our inn. We are glad that you found the inn clean and comfortable but are, of course, extremely disappointed that you found the staff had no rapport. This is certainly not the way that we like to conduct business and we pride ourselves on giving a personal service.

We have contacted you directly regarding this and it would be greatly appreciated if you could respond to that message, giving a few more details about your comments, so that we can address the issue directly, speak to any staff responsible, and ensure that no other guests have a similar experience.

Once again, we appreciate your comments which will enable us to improve as a business. As a small, family business, the guest is our primary focus and we work very hard to make sure that all guests have a warm welcome, a personal service, and a positive experience, so we are extremely sorry that on this occasion we fell short of your expectations.

When Lady S reserved 8 nights here I have to admit that I was quite dubious. This seemed a little too long. However, and bearing in mind all the dale waking we had planned, 8 nights was just fine.
The first thing to comment on is the amazing friendliness of all who work here. You could sense that everyone appeared to enjoy working here. We took a "superior room" which was just fine, size wise with my only gripe being that it took absolutely ages for the hot water to join up with the cold to make the shower enjoyable. So that's the room comment over.

Now the food. I've read that some writers thought the service a little slow. Now being on holiday, I found it to be just right. The breakfasts were delicious though I would recommend less toast because on nearly every table, the wastage was high.

We also ate quite often in the restaurant in the evening. The menu is varied enough not to get bored but yet again the quantities of veg are too big. Perhaps "less is more" and it could be noted that should the diner require more, then he/she simply has to ask. You must try the fish cake as a starter or (when it's on the menu) the broccoli & Stilton soup. There, that's the food sorted.

Now the wifi. Now while I accept that it's nice to get away I find a lack of decent wifi a shame. Wifi is limited to a small lounge and the signal occasionally makes it through the restaurant wall. Still, this is the only thing that I can moan about which is nothing compared to the rest of this glowing review. We do intend to return, though the Rt Hon Miss S will let us know as, she is all "walked out"

I have just returned from a three night stay here. Our family group included two 16 year olds. The Wheatsheaf is away from it all, Fantastic, a short walk across the fields to Aysgarth Falls is a must do.

Clare, the owner and front of the house was very welcoming and all staff were very friendly and professional. A delight to stay here. Good value for money. If staying on a sunday their roast is delicious. Whilst I didn't meet the chef all food was fabulous. The Broccoli and Stilton soup was lovely.

Internet access is very limited this is a bonus for our family as it meant that our teenagers did not have the distraction and were able to converse. Generally internet access across the dales is intermittent. This is part of the attraction for us.

We would recommend this hotel to anyone. It was lovely for families and couples alike.

Room Tip: Room 12 was perfect for us and a little larger than room 4 that our girls staed in and had two windows so was lighter.
