“A lovely stay”
Reviewed 27 April 2013

We stayed in a beautiful room with a separate lounge which had its own little wood burner. The fire was set and was a lovely way to end the evening. The decor managed to be modern and tasteful, but with a cosy cottage like feel, which we really loved. We had afternoon tea served in our room, which we really enjoyed.

Spa was lovely, so quiet, we hardly saw anyone else. We both really enjoyed our treatments and the pool and hot tub after.

We enjoyed the 6 course taster menu in the restaurant, which was very pleasant but no wow factor.

Service here is excellent. All staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful.

We would def recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: Request a room with log burner

....which could be a perfect hotel with a little more attention to detail. Lovely spa suite which was spacious and light;wonderful food in the restaurant served by attentive and friendly staff and relaxing time in the spa. I truly want to LOVE this hotel and mostly I do, but I do have some minor reservations. The fixtures and fittings are a bit dated, the pool side a bit faded, the hospitality tray just a bit ..dull (UHT milk...), the reception staff lacking in local knowledge. I say what I say to echo others and urge some focus on the small things. I will come again; I will recommend but please FA make some changes. This is such a beautiful place to be in such a perfect location....but to be rated 4# out of 4 in Helmsley shouldn't be ok for you. Look to the Pheasant...

Room Tip: The spa suites are good but v expensive. The poolside suite one the first floor is too dark with min...

I agree with a review posted below, there ought to be a button between, average and very good on here as this place does tick most boxes but not all.
The package we were on included 75 mins in the spa, £45 towards dinner, and Bed & Breakfast.
Our booking was upgraded free to a Poolside suite as it was our wedding anniversary and on arrival we were greeted in the room by a box of chocs and a card which was a lovely touch and was very much appreciated.
The Spa was fantastic. I think they could be clear on what is and isn't included on the package as I had my mind set on a specific treatment to be told it wasn't available as part of the deal we were in on. No big deal in the end as the treatment I got was brilliant, but the issue could have been avoided if the brochures were clearer.
The room was great but when you're paying £400 plus for one night you expect perfection. To compare, we spent £450 in total which could get you a suite at the Ritz or Claridges for the night, so I don't think I was out of line expecting it to be comparable. It isn't. The biggest let down is the little things that have been overlooked. the fixtures & fittings per room are dated and cheap. Old TV's, poor sound quality, dust in places, loose or no grouting in the bathroom and a faulty plug on the bath which housekeeping ARE aware of as there's a sucker to pull it out with as the handle is broken. For £400 a night this needs fixing not just bodging, the place needs to be immaculate with all mod cons.

People like Hollie & Greg in the restaurant and the other bar staff are making this place a great place to go and relax. The service is impeccable and if the owners put as much time & energy into the place as their serving staff do then they'll have a real gem.

The portion sizes keep getting commented on but this is a fine dining restaurant (or its building towards it), you don't get a massive plate of fish & chips and if that's what you're after then you're in the wrong place. The £45 pp doesn't go far at £8 a glass of wine £5 a pint, £12 for a starter and £30 average for a main you're going to contribute towards it but the food is good, the cheeseboard is great and worth the money in my opinion.

All in all a great relaxing stay but get the little things right then the big things will look even better!

i've wanted to stay here since 2009 (yes, really), so was over the moon when my husband booked it for a surprise weekend treat. i'm going to rattle on and chat about different aspects positive and negative

bedroom: we stayed in 18. it was charming with little quirks but absolutely not what we'd expect for what we paid. no biscuits on the tea tray, cheap UHT milk, the room and radiators painted a cloying blue colour and not very well at that, the 'queen' bed was 2 beds pushed together - cheap cheap cheap, the bath took about an hour to run, we were lying on the bed when a member of housekeeping let themsleves into our room, not realising it was occupied, the bedroom faced the road so it was pretty noisy but not as bad as the other rooms - there was some kind of 1930's party going on in one bedroom and the walls are so thin you hear absolutely everything. and our rooms was completely overlooked - all 4 windows, so you had to either walk around clothed or pull the blinds down which was a pain when returning from the spa during the day. the floor was so uneven that i was taking trousers off and fell off balance and crashed into the wall. old television and the only full length mirror was behind the bathroom door so steamed up post bath / shower.

Husband and i relaxing on the bed when in popped someone from hosekeeping, didn't knock, obviously didnt realise the room was occupied. nearly scared the life out of us.

Another annoying thing - they cleaned the room and didnt replace the tea bags, left some detergent spray on the windowsill and there was hairs around the sink when we checked in.

bar / hotel area: nice little thoughful touches like laptop use, library, DVD collection, loads of magazines. a pot of tea and a bag of crisps = £9. seriously. also it was like crufts in there - the place was rammed with dogs and their owners.

dinner: ok, the deal was dinner included but actually what you get is £45 pp towards dinner, which sounds reasonable till you find out a glass of prosecco is £12 and it's £30 average for a main course. the food itself was tasty - really lovely - but old fashioned in that the portion sizes are a bit 80's. we spent £180 on dinner plus 1 glass of prosecco and 2 glasses of wine. the menu was very 'London' but wasnt quite up to london standards, though actually i enjoyed it were it not for the fact that i had 3 courses (i;d only usually ever have 2), LOADS of bread and was still so hungry that i had to munch a bag of crisps at 11pm.

the cheese trolley was superb as was greg and his cheery advice. very professional. actually, the porter was brilliant too - a genuinely lovely bloke with great customer service ethic.

you seem to be encouraged to dress for dinner but actually most of the people there were pretty casual.

weird thing happened though - was pouring myself some water when a waitress came over, actually took the bottle from my hand as i was pouring, told me i was taking her job from her, then proceeded to ignore the empty wine glass, empty champagne glass and empty water glass and bottle on the table for the remainder of the evening, leaving me to pur my own or die of thirst.

Breakfast: i had scrambled egg and smoked salmon both mornings and it was lovely. hubby had cooked breakfast and said the same

spa: robes are scruffy and falling apart. my husbands entire shoulder was exposed as it had come away at the seam. i had a brilliant back and shoulder massage and reflexology - think it was phillipa? lovely girl and made experience really nice. manicure - they use jessica nail varnish which is a lovely brand, but they hardly have any of the range there - quite basic or old fashioned colours such as corals and irridescents. luckily i never travel anwhere without a bottle of cherrywood, so i was fine. the manicure was ok, decent, but not as tidy as i'd have liked and it peeled after 2 days.

nice that there's a heated swimming pool but it's very overlooked and exposed and left me feeling a bit vunerable as i swam alone and people in the dining room watched me...also, not 30 degrees. it was lukewarm at best.

jacuzzi is tiny and more than 3 people in there is bordering on the weird. like being on the tube in rush hour. sauna / steam room nice but not amazing. the staff there are brilliant and couldnt have been more accomodating.

so all in all a lovely weekend but i was so utterly stressed with work / travel / childcare that i needed a break and it came at the right time. if i had my time again i wouldnt go back. the fact we got a bit of change out of a grand was really bad - that's 2 flights to new york and actually quite a bit more than we paid for accomodation in a lovely villa in Spain for 10 days in the summer.

i am basing my scores on my experience solely and not the experiences i know friends have had there in the past

I can certainly see how this made it into the UK's top 25 Romantic Hotels - we stayed here for just the one night to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday and everything was first rate from start to finish. After phoning up earlier in the day to let the hotel know it was a celebration we had an upgrade waiting for us to a Superior Suite which was just delightful! Our three course dinner was first rate, the Seabass cooked to perfection (a 'Star' surely can't be far away?) while the cheese trolley was to die for!

We will certainly be returning.

We have just spent a night at the Feversham Arms with friends to celebrate a birthday . The room was excellent - in fact , a suite ( room 15 ! ) - comfortable and relaxing . My wife certainly enjoyed the spa ( I was stuck at work ) and spent a relaxing afternoon with our friends . Dinner in the evening was very good indeed , particularly bearing in mind that we were a party of 12 . My wife and I definitely intend to be back !

Lovely hotel, well looked after public areas. Receptionist could have been a little more welcoming upon arrival and pleasant upon departure. Food experience was amazing, pricey but a nice treat once in a while. A'la carte menu was fantastic, the (vegetarian) taster menu was even better. The dining/kitchen staff were very friendly and helpful - something the reception can learn from. The room, I'm afraid, did not meet the same standards. TV plug was badly damaged, although quickly fixed upon request. Water supply in bathroom had irregular speed, and was noisy. Most importantly, the walls are paper-thin and could hear everything from outside the room, the next door room and upstairs. Could not sleep a wink! (Avoid room 11, or the ones in the same corridor). Spa facilities/swimming pool - not utilised so cannot review. Would we return? Yes, but only for the food, not to stay.

Room Tip: Avoid room 11, or rooms in the same corridor as it is very noisy.
