“slightly dissappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2011

Had heard good things about this hotel so was looking to a pre christmas break , the frontage is lovely and ther fires looked inviting but once we started walking back the room I thought it cold and a little unloved. Room was freezing but there was a portable heater in the wardrobe which soon got pluged in brrrrrr. Room was nice enough but not spotless. Staff not overly friendly, dinner the taster menu wasnt as good as I expected fine but exceptional and the service in the bar for after dinner coffees was slow . Breakfast room service arrived promptly but bordered on the fine dining concept , not much of it and butter was bland only white toast no preference offered on the room service card, actually not even mentioned so wasnt sure any would come.
Generally lacking in attention to detail that I had heard off prior to my visit and certainly the food wasnt up to the standard I had heard off

The staff could not be more pleasant or helpful, the rooms are delightful, the food exquisite (especially the afternoon tea) in fact the whole experience was a joy. I will definately return for some R & R. Two members of staff deserve special mention : the gentleman who served us our afternoon tea and the female med student who served dinner & breakfast - both a credit to the hotel .Thank you. My Husband and I enjoyed a three night stay for our 40th wedding anniversary in November 2011. It is without doubt, the most comfortable and relaxing hotel we have ever stayed in. We usually spend a couple of nights away to celebrate our wedding anniversary and favour the country type hotels in rural areas so we have experienced a lot of comparisons. The Black Swan has recently been very tastefully refurbished and the choice of colours and fabrics makes it contemporary yet it still retains its 'Old Country Inn' atmosphere. We booked a junior suite in the old part of the hotel overlooking the square and the church, which we really enjoyed. The staff are wonderful, friendly yet discrete and have the skill of tuning in to visitors who wish to chat and those who do not. We booked two nights through Travel Zoo and one night bed and breakfast. The fact that we were staying at a reduced cost made no difference to the service we received, in fact they seemed to welcome the chance to increase the numbers of guests through the Travel Zoo initiative. We had afternoon tea served in the tea room and on another day in the bar area - both extremely pleasant. There is a good atmosphere with lovely easy listening music very quietly playing in the background. It is such a treat to have staff in a hotel who know and can advise on the local area. This is rarely found these days and hardly ever if the hotel is City based. We rarely return to hotels because we like to explore new areas but beyond doubt we will return to the Black Swan.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 16 which overlooks the square and the church. It is a junior suite with a small b...

We have just returned from a stay at The Black Swan with friends from London. This is an excellent hotel with professional staff and a particularly good dining room. Sadly, the comfortable lounges seen in the promotional literature seemed to be occupied by non residents and not enough ground floor space is given over to residents comfort. Reception seems no bigger than a shoe box although there was always someone there if you needed anything. The hotel was, if anything overstaffed and so it was surprising that after dinner coffees seemed to take an age to come and needed two reminders on our first night, and one very firm reminder the second. My advice here is not to leave the dinner table until you have had all you want - they will then hasten the service to get you out into the (by then) overflowing lounges.

I have two gripes. Firstly that on our second night, the hotel had a very good female singer in the bar accompanied by backing tracks who was so loud, nobody could hear their companions speak as they had a drink and shouted the dinner order to the waiters. We gave up and moved immediately into the dining room to order. I stress this singer was very good but it needed either less volume or a performance in the village hall where you could distance yourself from the noise. The second gripe is that the excellent Table D'Hote menu of the first night emerged on the second night as well, completey unchanged. It transpires that the menu was for the whole of November! One nighters are well catered for but 2+ nighters might struggle. It needs, perhaps, two menus alternating or, at the very least, some variety for weekenders like ourselves. There is the option to dip into the A La Carte but at a sizeable supplement for each and every variation thus further stretching the tarrif beyond its already higher than justified rates.

All of that said, it is a good hotel in an idyllic location and I would recommend it.

My husband and I have just had a very pleasant stay at the Black Swan though travelzool, I booked months ago as a cousin of mine lives in Helmsley and it was her 92nd birthday. The staff were excellent, very attentive without being pushy. It's a comfortable base for exploring that part of Yorkshire though that was not our reason for being there. The food was interesting with an afternoon tea to write home about, it was all included in the deal price. It's full full of old world charm and very comfortable. Give it a try when you can, it's worth every penny as it's a cut above. We will return at a future date.

Room Tip: I don't think I can add a tip really other than to go via a travelzoo type deal if possible and...

Stayed at the Black Swan, Helmsley for two nights. The hotel is of a very good standard and staff are polite, knowledgeable and very helpful. The rooms are well equipped and very clean, including fluffy bath robes, Pecksniffs toileteries, lovely king size comfortable bed, flat screen television, ironing board and iron, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities (variety of teas and herbal tea as well as instant and ground coffee). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel and had a lovely afternoon tea, (gin and tonic was the weekly flavour which the manager of the tea room allowed us to try - great for settling your tummy). We had a 'taster menu' dinner on one of the evenings, which was lovely and great value. Every member of staff seemed to be enjoying their work and had a smile on their face and were extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. Helmsely itself is a lovely little market town which some quaint shops. This location is ideally suited for exploring the Cleveland Hills and North East Coast i.e. Whitby, Robins Hood Bay, Scarborough etc. We will return..

Really cosy country hotel. Lovely location. We enjoyed a walk from Rievaulx Abbey to Helmsley, wonderful leaf colours. Reception staff hit and miss but the waiters were wonderful.
Excellent dinner and breakfast. Would like to make this an annual event!

Room Tip: Paid £32 extra for feature room. Large sunny room, overlooked village square.
