Wow, this hotel has improved so much since our last visit a few years ago. The staff were wonderful, helpful & happy. We wanted to change our room as we wanted to be upstairs and it was done in a matter of minutes. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was simply delicious. Our waitress (Kate) was fantastic. The room was a good size with a king size bed, it was warm, clean & very welcoming. Thank you we will definitely return.

Had two nights at the Black Swan which made for a relaxing weekend. We had stopped here last year for just one night but booked a weekend break for two nights this February with dinner bed and breakfast included.
Hotel is really cosy and overlooks the square in Helmsley. Welcome was as warm as last time and the room clean and comfortable. The meals on both nights were both superb and the lamb on the Friday was especially delicious. Breakfast both mornings was great with coffee being refilled endlessly and lots of locally produced fare. Service was brilliant and the waiters and waitresses are all very polite and knowledgable. Cat looked after us both nights and helped us choose the wine and James was also a great advert for the hotel as he was chatty and very professional. Try the espresso Martinis, they are very special and make a nice change at the end of your meal. The bars and lounges are a fabulous place to relax and very cosy and warm. Bar staff and waiters are courteous and polite and you are made to feel very special.
Prices are on the high side for food and drink but it is high quality and it does represent great value for money (you get what you pay for!) Helmsley is a great place to explore North Yorkshire from and we visited nearby Rivaulx Abbey, Mount Grace Priory , Pickering Castle (albeit closed) and finally Helmsley castle.
Our room will probably need a makeover in the next 18 months as the bathroom and some of the furniture is starting to look tired. But don't let that put you off as the rooms are still a good deal better than many other hotels we have stopped in but as the rest of the Black Swan experience is so good this is the only minor negative point we could identify.
There was a wedding party on on the Saturday night which became a bit rowdy but it was well contained in the function room and the staff made sure that the other guests did not have their evening disrupted.
We will definitely be back again and hopefully we can stop for even longer.
Thanks to all the staff for a wonderful stay, fabulous food and drink and a lovely atmosphere.

As regular visitors to Helmsley from newcastle, this was our first stay in this excellent hotel. We took advantage of a special offer and were very happy with our choice. Service from all the staff throughout was exceptional and couldn't have been more welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. Enjoyed a fabulous meal in the restaurant and although fine dining isn't my thing, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and my wife was very impressed.
Rooms were very well equipped and the cygnet bar very enjoyable indeed with a superb collection of refreshments, including the superb Black Swan bitter.
Would recommend this hotel.

my partner and i stayed the last 2 nights and i have to say the whole experience has been fantastic, the service is second to none, the food was outstanding,im a chef myself so i can appreciate the direction the chef is taking, and i hope he gets there,he deserves it and so do all the staff, especially stuart our waiter for the majority of the time we ate,who was very professional and a real character at the same time, other places we have visited have had slightly "wooden" front of house staff with no real personality.when dinning somewhere quite formal,i personally need staff with character to help me settle in as im useless at relaxing and having people serve me excellent food when i spend all my time cooking it.

Room Tip: feature rooms at front of hotel is very good ,just above the tea room

A fantastic stay. We booked for two nights for our friends forthcoming wedding. Jane Potter organized the weekend -We opted for Dinner Bed and Breakfast - but included Champagne Afternoon Tea, and the Gourmet Dinner on Saturday night. The staff were very professional and friendly, nothing being too much trouble. The bedrooms were good, although my only complaint would be that they could have upgraded the bride to be. The food was superb, both menu's were really well presented. The Gourmet 6 course tasting menu's was really well put together, we also opted for the drinks package with this menu - again a very good choice. We were served in a private dining room with dedicated staff. Our activities had been arranged through the hotel. We went to the Yorkshire 4 x 4 centre and spent our time quad biking and 4 x 4 driving what fun. On Sunday we visited the Verbena Spa across the road at The Feversham Arms, a well earned chill out. All in all I would strongly recommend the Black Swan. Keep up the good work, Yorkshire hospitality at it's best!

Room Tip: If you have difficulty walking I would suggest rooms at the front of the hotel

Me and my partner visited one weekend on a whim after a less than enjoyable trip to nearby Knaresborough. Helmsley is a beautiful little village without any of the Royston Vasey vibes some others exude. After a restorative cup of coffee at a nearby coffee shop we went looking for a place to stay. Right in the market center is The black Swan, it's small old world facade masking a larger interior. As you step in the place is very warm and welcoming and great to come in from the cold to.
We checked in with minimum fuss and soon made off to our room. Very clean with nice furniture and finish with good well thought out aesthetics and use of the cosy space available. We had a relaxing bath while listening to music from the television and soon went down to the bar to enjoy some classic cocktails and lovely live music. The barman Thomasz was really on form and we had a lot of fun. We had so much of a good time we were too late for dinner :/ but the restaurant staff were very apologetic and so we opted for room service which was just the ticket. We then chose a cigar from the bar, opting for a late night stroll through the peaceful streets before bed.
In the morning we went down for a full English which had a great black pudding (if that is your thing) and pretty much all that you would want, the staff were extremely professional and polite as were the staff on reception (and pretty much all staff there come to think of it).

Pros:
Clean bedroom and bathroom.
Comfortable bed.
Staff very pleasant and willing to help.
Excellent food and drink.
Idyllic setting.
Traditional charm and ambiance.

Cons:
Windows are not double glazed.
No on-site spa or swimming pool.

A big thanks to all at The Black Swan for a lovely weekend from M Fisher.

As with all reviews, i take into account what, where and the decisions i made to the hotel. What room choice i made, the time of year and my expectations.

The Black San came highly recommended, and a previous stay in this area, at The Pheasant in Harome, kept the expectation high.

So what was good?

The location is excellent for the market town and the numerous walks you can do (despite snow and rain). It's a great hotel in a great location. the bar was friendly - locals with dogs, warming by the fire, a wedding in another room. The food was great too, although with one of the menu choices, i was left with 90% side elements, to 10% main item.
Also, our room was well appointed and spotlessly clean.

So why no 5 stars?
It just lacked something in the final hurdle. Our room was at the end of a long (long) featureless corridor (ok, it is narrow) and the exterior of the doors lacked attention. It felt very much like any chain hotel.
Inside the room it was spacious and well laid out, but lacked personality and some furniture was looking tired.
In the bathroom, the toilet roll holder was coming away from the wall. Not broken, but not perfect.
The main thing for mw though was it all felt quite impersonal. Staff were friendly, but i not particularly genuine (ok, some exceptions here). The bar service was functional, as was reception. The restaurant was more engaging though.
Finally, and this is my fault for not reading all detail on the website. Pets are welcome. Ok, there was absolutely no evidence of this in out room (no smell, no hairs) - but the room next door had a VERY vocal dog, obviously left alone. So, 10:30 to 10:50 - lots of continual barking.

All in all, it was good, but I went for a special occasion, and it lacked that special edge.
Great hotel - yes. A Boutique hotel...? Unsure is my opinion.

Room Tip: The old rooms may be smaller, but may offer more personality. If i was staying again, i would try th...
