Title says it all. Excellent, though pricey, afternoon tea. Well worth it for a special treat with impeccable service provided by friendly staff. An added bonus is the fantastic countryside around Helmsley which also boasts its own local attractions - Castle, Duncombe Park, Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard nearby.

Thank you for your lovely comments following your stay at the hotel, we are delighted that you loved your stay and all aspects of the hotel from your room, to the food, to the service that you received from all the team. Thank you for your comment regarding the bathroom, we are aware that some of the bathrooms need attention and we are looking to refurbish these in 2014.

We stayed for one night on the way through North Yorkshire and had a wonderful experience. The hotel itself was easy to find and parking was ample. From the moment we arived the staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. We were settled into our room which was a delightful mix of character and luxury and then had tea and petit fours in the lounge. We opted for the 10 course tasting menu that evening which was beautifully put together and enhanced by the knowledge and attention of the waiting staff. I did not request any special dietary requirements at the time of reservation but the check in staff had noticed that I was obviously pregnant and informed the chef who adapted the menu without any suggestion of detriment to the experience. My husband and I felt that this was exemplary service and would highly recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: Stay in the old part of the hotel!

I booked The Black Swan as a birthday surprise for my boyfriend at the weekend. we stayed for one night. We thoroughly enjoyed afternoon tea in the tea room before checking in and all the staff were pleasant and helpful, the afternoon tea was gorgeous!
On checking in the hotel was very nice, the restaurant , bar and lounge areas specifically. other areas of the hotel are quite "rustic" and lets say "wonky" !!! our room did not have a good view but none of this would spoil our stay.We enjoyed a walked around the town and a drink in a couple of nice local pubs before returning to the hotel to get ready for the evening meal, which I had booked at the hotel restaurant. We both had the tasting menu with wine pairing which was amazing. unfortunately the only thing that may of let the evening down was waiting 40 minutes for our last course and then another 30 and having to ask for the cheese board... Shame! we weren't the only ones either, so I think perhaps that if they had sorted that I would give 5 stars. however I think we would go back and will probably try the sister hotel next :)

We spent two night here and really enjoyed it. The original building (which is located at the front) is charming, however our room was down a very long corridor in a new build located all the way at the back. It almost felt like we were staying in another hotel! If you're after an authentic experience then be sure to book a room up front.

I wasn't expecting the restaurant to be as good as it is- it's fantastic! The menu is creativity traditional and the food is excellently prepared. Both breakfast and dinner were wonderful.

The Black Swan has a terrific team in place and everyone was very helpful, professional and accommodating. The service seemed genuine. Zoltan deserves a special mention - he was fab!

We love Helmsley and decided to visit the Black Swan as part of our search for an ideal wedding venue. We stayed over night with the spring into Yorkshire package and enjoyed a very warm welcome with wonderful warm scones and a glass of prosecco. Our room was tastefully decorated with Molton brown products a large super king bed and was spotlessly clean. We dined in the restaurant and sampled the 6 course tasting menu which was superb. The staff and service was exemplary and this continued through to breakfast.

The location is right in the heart of Helmsley situated in the market square with lots of shops, cafes and places of interest within easy walking distance.

A real treat and we are both looking forward to our wedding there next year!
