A wonderful place to relax and feel at home, especially in the winter with the log fire. Food is delicious and always beautifully presented and a significant reason to want to 'eat-in' here. Bedrooms come in two sorts - slightly quirky in the front half/ original part of the building (old building squeaky floorboard style!), and more normal but nice 'boutique' rooms in the later-added back half of the hotel. Have stayed in both sorts and found them equally enjoyable in their different ways. Thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the rear part if you don't like old historic rooms with squeaky floorboards!

We stayed at the Black Swan on Monday 21 October. It was just part of a short break a we run into winter time. The hotel was in a lovely town in north Yorkshire and had a prominent position on the market square.

We were made to feel very welcome as we checked in and immediately felt very relaxed. The lounge and bar area was very inviting and there was an eating area serving afternoon teas which were excellent. The quality of the food and service made us look forward to dinner even more than usual.

Our bedroom was excellent and was very well decorated. A great deal of thought had gone into the design we were more than pleased with our choice of accommodation for the evening.

For dinner we decided to sample the 6 course dinner along with the wine choice which was a different wine for each course. The food and wine was outstanding and the service in the restaurant was first class. As each wine was served we were told about the wine and why it had been chosen for this particular curse. The food itself was very very good I would not hesitate to recommend the Black Swan to anyone.

We will definitely return for a longer stay.

Room Tip: Try the 6 course diiner and the wine option.

Thank you so much for your kind comments following your visit to The Black Swan. We are delighted you had a wonderful time and found the hotel to be welcoming and inviting, and the food, in particular the six course Tasting Menu, to be outstanding. Hopefully we'll see you again very soon, this time for a little longer!

Stayed here for one night on the "Sunday is the new Saturday" deal, it was our first wedding anniversary and a birthday treat. We had paid to upgrade our room, our room was very homely with a lovely view over the gardens. We had the 6 course taster menu with wines to match, it was very nice & a great experience. My husband being a head chef himself is hard to please, we both thoroughly enjoyed the food, I wouldn't go as far to say it's our best meal however still very enjoyable and the odd combinations worked well. We did feel dinner went on slightly too long as we sat down just after 7 and did not finish until around 10.15, we were hoping to have a drink in the bar where there was a live singer afterwards, however by this point we were both very full & tired. Drinks were above our usual price bracket (£10 per cocktail), however due to being a treat this wasn't a problem. Breakfast was very good, we didn't have chance to try the tea rooms. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return for future offers.

We chose this hotel as many years ago my parents had stayed and always remembered it as "one of the best THF hotels". Sadly I felt it was looking tired and in places a little tatty. Our classic room was down a rather drab corridor which had the appearance (and smell) of my old boarding school! In the corridor there was an electrical device hanging perilously from a wall and a boarded square attached with duct tape covering over something. The staircase has chipped paint and although the small lounge was cosy enough the bar did not entice. The bedroom was small but cosy. A rather nasty mark on the duvet cover appeared to be due to it being rather thin but this was very visible and should not be used as it again indicated a failure to address the things that make a stay special. The bathroom was old fashioned and the water from tap and shower scaldingly hot. What is the point of a brown teddy bear sitting on the bed?
We ate at the nearby Feversham Arms and the decor and lighting in their public rooms were much more inviting.
Breakfast was delicious and staff attentive with two waiters asking for our room no. although only one initially elusive waiter appeared able to take the order.
Overall a bit disappointing but the late booking rate of £115 meant that it was reasonably good value.

It has been a week or so since we returned home after a night away at The Black Swan and we are still talking about it. We have stayed there several times and the experience is always first class.
Our room was in the modern part of the hotel and was towards the rear of the building - a bit of a walk but who cares!
I knew that the rooms had been refurbished since our last visit; ours was spacious, warm and light. The bed was huge and everything was clean and tidy.
We had booked a table in the restaurant to sample the new Gallery Signature Menu - a ten course meal with beverage pairing. First we had pre-dinner drinks in the bar, which had a relaxing atmosphere to it.
From past experience we knew that the food would be amazing and we weren't wrong. Ten courses may seem a bit over the top, but we urge you to give it a go! The food was served with care, attention to detail and an explanation of what was laid before you. Each course was its own occasion and a talking point, one lovely surprise after another.
Highlights - Gin and Tonic Sorbet ('refreshing' doesn't do it justice) and the Mushrooms, Truffle and Wood Pigeon (rich and autumnal). As far as 'deserts' go, you can't beat the Popcorn, Caramel, Malt and Sea Salt. My idea of desert heaven would be a whopping big bowl of it and a jolly large spoon!
We slept well and shuffled down to breakfast; husband enjoyed the smoked haddock and poached egg, while I opted for porridge and toast for the long journey home.
It's always a treat to visit this hotel, the staff always make you feel welcome and I try to clock the name badges and use their names when chatting. I'd like to mention Laura who brought our pre-dinner drinks as she remembered us from our last visit which was a while ago - it makes you feel part of the 'hotel family'.
All the restaurant staff were lovely but we were impressed with the way a couple of chaps who rolled in ad-hock looking for a table were handled. Standing around seeming oblivious to the fact guests were trying to enjoy their meals they made the place look untidy but Stuart (who also helped serve our meal) handled them very well.
Our short stay was, as always, amazing; we hope to return in the spring.

We stayed here for our one year wedding anniversary, and had booked the room about 4 months in advance. We stayed on the "to dine for" offer for two nights so had a 10 course tasting menu (i additionally had the drinks pairing too), breakfast both nights, afternoon tea and market menu dinner the second night.

We were well and truly stuffed by all of the food! It was fantastic. The food was really good and really different. Even the second night market menu was divine - although i was so full up through the whole two days I probably didnt appreciate it as much then!!The afternoon tea selection was really really nice - its probably worthy of a visit to the hotel just for the afternoon tea. We had it whilst sat in the bar area, reading the paper and on the big comfy couches. They topped up our sandwich selection as my husband is a vegetarian who doesnt eat egg either - and they were so very good with his dietary requirement. They were even able to put together the 10 course meal for his diet too.

We stayed in room 18 which was nice, but not great. I was slightly disappointed to be fair, after having tweeted them about an offer they ran re upgrades for bookings - we had booked so early we thought that a room with a view would have been nice - but our room literally looked out onto a roof. And that was it - the room was set lower down so we literally looked out the window and saw a roof - i was disappointed as they had specifically tweeted back saying that I had been already allocated a lovely room for our anniversary trip - like i said - nice but not great.

The bar on a sunday night was also great , really busy and a live guitarist singer there where lots of people were even dancing - lots of fun and maybe something they should think about adopting into the week as well - we didnt really feel like going for a drink on the monday night after dinner as there was less of a buzz in the bar.

All in all a wonderfful trip and i would highly recommend - but do be sure to check which room you have been allocated and the view. We did feel a bit like we had been locked up underground !

Sunday is the new Saturday overnight break with taster menu and wine flight, was devine. Friendly knowledgable waiting staff added to enjoyment. A pleasure to be able to take our two terrier size dogs, who were fussed over too. A lovely welcoming warm experience all round.
