“A Tasting Menu definitely worth trying- and the dog came too!”
Reviewed 10 February 2014

We booked a special deal 'Sunday is the New Saturday', six course tasting menu with wines and a half bottle of champagne in the room. The Hotel was most welcoming and we had a lovely room with everything we needed. The room also had a dog bowl and two biscuits. We shared a delicious afternoon tea in the bar and that put us on till dinner. Dinner was amazing, each plate a work of art with a wine to match. Portions were small but perfect. Helmsley is a old market town witha lovely square and we did a great 6 mile walk the next morning after an excellent breakfast. The staff were attentive and friendly and knowledgeable. We shall return.

We stayed two nights, at the beginning of February. The hotel and Helmsley were all that I had hoped for, the occasion was my 60th birthday. Rooms and hotel well appointed. Staff universally and continually helpful and courteous. The food was fantastic, in our opinion Michelin star standard. Service was good, we never had to wait too long (even though on the second night they had 70 people in for an end of season game dinner), nor were we rushed. Breakfast was also delicious, without any problems at all.
Our only problem was Room 48, which we were in for the first night. We could hear a high pitched whine through the wall. I asked at Reception and was told there was a dryer in the room next door. Unfortunately they were full that night so we could not move rooms. It was the kind of noise that gets right inside your head. It eventually stopped at 11.30 pm, but when I awoke at 6.00 am the following morning it was already going again. Fortunately we were able to move to another room for the second night, which was a great relief! Would have given 5 stars if was not for this.

Had a wonderful stay at the Black Swan last week with my husband and sister and brother in law. When we arrived we were given a complimentary upgrade to feature rooms at the front of the hotel. They were beautifully decorated, warm and with a great view across the square. The hotel staff were charming, friendly and very helpful.
In the evening we started with drinks in the very comfy bar before enjoying a very artistically presented three course dinner. The food was delicious in every way which we complimented by a Spanish Rioja.
After our meal we had coffees and brandies in the lounge before a good nights sleep. The chocolates served with the coffee were delightful.
In the morning the breakfast choices were fabulous. We will not leave it long before visiting again! It has been twenty years since the last time!

Room Tip: The front of the hotel has fabulous views across the square!

We stayed her at the end of January on a shooting party. This was our second that of the season.
Always have a lovely time. The hotel & location are perfect, Helmsley is a beautiful village.
Drink in the Feathers across the square always recommended.
We stayed in room 15 at the front of hotel, great room. Only downside it was a little cool. The radiator didn't really get hot, & there was a plug in electric one in the wardrobe, so I guess it's a common problem.
Aside from that all was well. We ate at the hotel in the evening
The food is good, breakfast too.
Always busy in the hotel in the afternoon, I believe they do an excellent Afternoon Tea.

Decided to spoil myself and celebrate my birthday in this boutique hotel. The hotel is 'old worldly' style, low beams, log fires, old fashioned Xmas decorations. The room was nice ,comfortable with everything you could need I loved the toiletries Molton Brown. The staff were attentive and eager to help. Our stay included dinner of the al a carte ( not the market one) it was quite expensive and I know this might make me sound a bit of a pleb , but actually it was a bit poncy, and I did not like it. Feel bad saying that as everyone seemed to rave about the chef but sorry it was more like 'art' than food and I wish we had either ordered off the market or ate out. The breakfast was ok, but nothing special and on the Sunday Morning the chef must have been off, over cooked
sausage(singular) no yogurts, all served in a stifling heat quite uncomfortable really.

Room Tip: Go for the market menu or eat out.

We were here for our joint 50th birthdays. Dinner bed and breakfast. Throughout the stay the service and staff were excellent. We even got some chocolates for our present from the hotel! The food was very good. The drinks were a bit expensive though. All in all though I would highly recommend a stay here

From the moment we walked into reception to our checkout we relaxed and enjoyed! the hotel is simply lovely, staff are perfect, food is amazing, but nothing beat the bed - linens, duvet and pillows - sheer luxury!
The 6 course taster was like the final of Masterchef ! nothing to improve, and we will recommend to everyone.
