“Recent package for Dinner, Bed & Breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

We have used the Black Swan for over 40 years and keep going back. On this occasion we took advantage of an offer of dinner with a three course evening meal (different wine with each course) and an overnight stay with breakfast.

The staff are always friendly and helpful and the food was exceptionally good. Our only complaint was that our room was towards the rear of the hotel and was a long walk from reception and was looking a little tired and without the character of the rooms in the main building.

Despite that we had a wonderful night away and will go back.

Room Tip: Ask for one at the front of the hotel

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Black Swan for one night in May. The hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming and our room was beautiful, in a quiet location overlooking the very pretty garden. The quality of furnishings was excellent and it was great to have the luxury of Molton Brown toiletries.

We had a perfect stay, including the best dinner either of us have ever experienced (the cheese board was incredible!), again with fantastic, unsnobby service, followed by a drink in the bar overlooking the town square, with a convivial atmosphere which really encourages you to linger and relax.

I really couldn't recommend the hotel more; we did not want to leave and will certainly return!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the garden - they are quite a distance from the main body of the hotel, t...

My husband and I stayed there for a one night, cream tea, dinner, bed & breakfast experience. I have to say from the moment we got there to the moment we checked out we were treat like royalty. We arrived a little later than planned making cream tea difficult as we had our dinner booked for 7.15. We were asked if we wanted to transfer it to the following day, which was wonderful. Dinner was outstanding! Breakfast delivered to our room the following morning was equally impressive. After a saunter around Helmsley we returned for our cream tea and guess what? Wow, just wow. Although the package does seem pricey at first glance, I have to say it is a treat that really shouldn't be passed on.

This is the 2nd time that I have stayed at The Black Swan and on both occasions (both were birthday celebrations) I couldn't fault the hotel, the staff and the food.
This time we stayed as part of a meal deal, inc 6 course taster meal, a room with 1/2 bottle of champagne and strawberries and full breakfast.
Also with it being my birthday, they had put some complimentary chocolates in the room and with my evening meal there was a birthday cake at the end of the meal. Fortunately the cake was more in the taster style as after eating 6 taster courses I didn't have any room for a huge cake.
The service by all the hotel staff was 2nd to none and the restaurant staff were fantastic. I also opted for the wine taster package that is suited to the meal and I thought it worked really well and was actually good value for money.
On checkout we were heading off to a wedding, but I'm not that great with ties, but the guys at reception sorted my tie out, so it no longer looked like a small child had tied it.
A few days after returning home we received a hand written card from the hotel hoping that we had a great stay and hoped to see us again. Simple, but nice touch.

I will be returning to the Black Swan.

Stayed here for a function with friends. The hotel has a wonderful walled garden and relaxing public spaces. Rooms need a little updating but very acceptable. Food at dinner and breakfast was excellent. Very friendly staff but found them a bit disorganised eg had to beckon a member of staff to order breakfast after waiting a little too long and then got asked for our order from another member of staff 10 mins later, got our keys at reception and had to ask where in the hotel our room was. Very minor points but frustrating when the hotel is so good in other ways. Despite this we throughly enjoyed our stay and are intending a revisit with our dog!

Had an amazing one night stay! Food was outstanding and topped of by exemplary service. Our waiter at dinner was a shining example of his profession, as was the older gentleman in the bar. Staff conduct themselves with a balance of professionalism, friendliness and humour that is hard to achieve, let alone maintain when working such long hours. Many thanks for a wonderful birthday. We'll be back!

The Black Swan is excellent. We stay at a lot of hotels and noting that staff are friendly and professional should and mostly is standard. Black Swan's staff are an order of magnitude better than anywhere I can remember. The service is brilliant. We had a great lunch in the peaceful garden's at the back. Then in the evening partook of the 6 course taster menu which was great and raised the question why hasn't it got a Michelin star? Next morning we had breakfast delivered to the room, and again, one of the best hotel breakfasts we can remember - very nicely cooked, good quality and well presented. We were planning to check out in the morning and leave, but it had been such a good stay that we checked out, went for a walk round the town and came back for lunch again before setting off for home. Will definitely visit again.
Helmsely is a very nice town to visit surrounded by pleasant countryside. Never been to a town where dogs are so welcome and the Black Swan warmly welcomes dogs.
