“Great stopover”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

We responded to a black swan email offering us the chance to sample the new 8 course autumn tasting menu and stop over, never cheap, but good value as the hotel and restaurant are excellent.

First, we upgraded to a front of hotel old fashioned superior room - if they have them available ask the receptionist and do a deal on the spot - we did! Breakfast was fabulous, whatever you wnated, this time I paired kipper fillets with local sausages - not that traditional but oh so tasty - excellent coffee too.

The new menu was great - I think it replaces the previous 10 course taster which was too long - it may change of course but my observations included

Cucumber starters were was ultra refreshing.
Salmon Miso – I loved this, I liked the Japanese type taste, it was a good size, nicely flakey and beautifully cooked. It did remind me of black cod that I had at Nobu – similar type of dish. A tip, from the bar grab a couple of seaweed crackers for this course - they would be a perfect crispy accompaniment to this dish
Apple dish – A tiny little apple dish with the celeriac cream and apple jus in the middle was GORGEOUS – especially that little apple – I can’t remember if it was a meat dish, that apple was so nice – never had anything like this before, worked really well indeed and I still remember the massive punch of apple flavour.
Duck and Scallop – Quite a simple dish in many ways and none the worse for that. You could taste all the flavours – the scallop was really good, so was the duck, a super little dish especially for the autumn.
Veal and Beans ate quite well, but it wasn't to my taste as much as other dishes - each to his own!
Sea Bass – really good indeed. I love sea bass – this was as nice as sea bass fillet as I’ve had. Can’t add much more – very good.
Black Forest – the concept I got immediately – the cherry ice was beautiful, loved the cream and lots of chocolatey stuff which was nice but too much of it for me - it wa sa big finish and quite delicious!
Service – Vaughan was simply stunning, funny, slightly irreverent but in a very nice way, leading us gently to the dishes but allowing us to explore and discover too, A real credit.

History – last year we stayed over and had the 10 course tasting menu – it was too long! We sat down at 7 and we were still there at 11 and tired. 8 course is better. I’ve also stayed and had the 6 course about 4 years ago – the quality and inventiveness has improved no end since then.

Room Tip: Old rooms at the front are very much nicer and bigger

We enjoyed our wedding anniversary here in April, our room was lovely, comply bed.
The meal for dinner was fab, really lovely.
We had afternoon tea in the tea room which was nice. Although the scones weren't the best a bit rubbish really, a waste of calories.
Very good service.
Would go back.

The location is wonderful, but the hotel needs money spending on it, and some tighter management. The food is very disappointing (limited menu, small portions, attempting to be fashionable but not succeeding), the service (with one sparky South African the exception) slow and the rooms are faded and not kept well. It's expensive for what it is.

After staying at the Black Swan for a friends wedding , we promised to return due to the lovely area , great hotel, upbeat staff and fantastic food ....so we did 5 times in the last 18 months and although there has been some recent changes with staff the service has still been top notch from the packed lunches for your walks to making sure your dogs got enough water !
The only downside is that the bathrooms could do with make over , but hey, your only in it for no more than an hour.
From light bites menus to the full 6 starter menu you will not find fault , is it any wonder that the times we have been the hotel has always been very busy ...A place that you must at least try once.

Room Tip: Book early its very popular when there are special offers on especially for the tasting menus. The...

Were booked into a garden room but on arrival were offered a discounted upgrade to a feature room which we took after being shown different rooms. Room 15 was lovely with an entrance area with wardrobe/tea&coffee/trouser press and suitcase storage. This went through to the spacious bedroom with 2 chairs and an occasional table, large TV and beautiful oak leaf man adzed furniture. The en suite was along a short corridor and had a bath with shower over, bidet, M&B toiletries, bath robes, soft towels. The room overlooked the market square and had great character.
The staff were exceptionally attentive and friendly throughout the hotel.
Our evening meal was fantastic: relaxing in the bar with predeinks and menu choices, great presentation, portions just right to satisfy but not over face, a lovely bunch of jolly waitresses, waiters and wine butlers.
Retired to bed very content and slept very well.
Breakfast again was superb in choice and quality.
Final touch was a parting bag of fresh apples and bottled water for our day ahead.
Wonderful place to stay and pretty good value too.

Book Room 5 (superior room) for a perfect night away- the view over the market place, sitting in the window seat with half bottle of champagne and strawberries ! We booked the 'Hungry for More ' package, a six course tasting menu which included the champagne and strawberries waiting for us in our room. We also opted for the wines to match each course which we would definitely recommend .Staff are friendly and we were impressed by the knowledge of the staff serving us at dinner- both about the food and wine. A very memorable and relaxing stay, loved it!

I felt like our visit to the Black Swan didn't get off to the best start. On arrival at the 'hotel' car park at 3.15pm in the afternoon, the rain was pouring down and we couldn't find a parking space. It appears the general public of Helmsley use the free hotel car park and when its full, there's no space for guests. Anyway, moving on from that, we were booked into Room 44, which we immediately disliked, it was a king size room, which we felt was quite dingy, overlooked the service/car park road and felt a little unloved. I went back to reception and asked if there was an alternative, thankfully the very nice man moved us to Room 41, which was a lovely large and well decorated room, the only downside was it was on the ground floor and the low window looked onto the busy car park, so we had people walking right past the window. That's all the negatives done with, now I'll tell you of the many good things. The hotel was very clean, comfortable and well presented and the gardens were absolutely beautiful, with lots of table and chairs for guests. Due to the rain we weren't lucky enough to sit out. We ate in the Gallery Restaurant, which had a lovely ambiance and the food was absolutely to die for. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and the service was faultless. After a bad start, we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
