Description: A fabulous family friendly, award winning fish and chip cafe. Just voted Best Fish and Chip shop 2013. Either take away or eat in. With 80 covers there is plenty of room, coach parties welcome. We aim to provide the best fish and chips available from sustainable and local sources at a value price. Gluten free and veggie chip shop chips. Served with a smile. Our premises are not your usual fish and chip cafe and are a pleasurable and inspiring place to spend some time.

A snap decision to have a fish and chip lunch turned out to be one of my better ideas choosing this restaurant sealed the deal. Very friendly staff who were attentive and keen to please serving well cooked fish and chips for six people at a reasonable price, I'm sure the takeaway side is also a good bet too (i'll be back to check)

Thank Mark B

Hello and thanks for the review,
Great idea for Sunday lunch, who needs roast beef and yorkshire pudding, when you can have proper Yorkshire fish n chips, with Yorkshire caviar ( home made mushy peas).
High quality, value for money and great service - that is what we do, and delighted you experienced it all.
Spread the word and come back soon.
Regards
Tony

After a lovely afternoon in Helmsley, myself and some friends saw this fish and chip shop, and wanted to sit inside. The weather was beautiful but it had just started raining. We went into the cafe which was dead anyways, and sat down thinking we were going to be paying around £7/8 for a sit down meal of fish n chips. We received the menu to be horrified at the prices of the fish n chips. £10.50 for Cod chips and mushy peas, and it was £13.50 for haddock, chips and mushy peas. Extortionate prices!!! We then wanted some bread - £1.20 for one slice of STALE bread.
Drinks were also extortionate, charging just under £2 for a can of coca cola. When the food arrived, the one slice of bread was stale, the curry sauce that we got instead of mushy peas was gooey and thick - the chips and the fish tasted lovely, however, and the meal was well presented. But the overall experience was not good, the waitress shouted when taking our order and the whole atmosphere of the cafe was drab.
What a let down for such a lovely place. I would not visit again.

Hello and thanks for the review,
Not sure what to make of your comments.
Our menus are displayed outside with prices and clearly you could see all prices when ordering, so not sure why you are complaining about the prices. If you were to visit Whitby, you would pay at least a couple of pound more for restaurant fish n chips.
We do have a takeaway with takeaway prices.
The service and quality you describe, is simply not acceptable nor believable. Our service and quality is very high, as can be seen by the many reviews on here,
You seem to have eaten all the food and did not complain on the day, so again not sure what the issue is.
If there was an issue you should have spoken to the manager at the time and we would have resolved any issues, no quibble. Writing such negative reviews on here serve no purpose, other than putting the business and jobs at risk!!!!
Regards
Tony

My brother and I were spending a weekend in North Yorkshire taking a 'trip down memory lane'. We were especially wanting to visit Lastingham, where our late parents often stayed. We stopped at Helmsley, as we love the traditional Yorkshire market town, and were planning on a pub lunch.... until we sauntered past Sootts, and in true 'Bisto Kids' fashion our nostrils were filled with the delightful smell of fish and chips; both of us thought the same thing and in we went. Scotts is a bit like the tardis - much larger than you imagine when you see it from outside, it was pretty busy so we went upstairs; we sat at a table for 2 and Natalie, our server, greeted us. We ordered - my brother deciding upon the Moby Dick special... it was at this point that we were advised to move to a table for 4 as the plate would struggle to fit onto the table we had chosen. We were not disappointed, the fish and chips were absolutely delicious.... crisp dry batter, beautifully white fish and fantastic chips, heaven! It took us both back to our youth, and days of Harry Ramsdens... we both live well south of Yorkshire now - but I can recommend Scotts of Helmsley - the location, food and service were all second to none! We will be back!

Hi Alyson and thanks for the review,
Wow, great comments and exactly what we aim to achieve and deliver to every customer.
Proper Yorkshire fish n chips, thick, meaty and flaky fish, crisp batter, cooked in beef dripping, with firm on the outside, but soft fluffy on the inside chips.
Served with big happy smiley faces. Well down Natalie.
Lots to do in Helmsley, juts search Visit Helmsley to find more reasons to come back.
Thanks again and see you soon.
Regards
Tony

So, you're in Helmsley looking for lunch and you stumble on Scotts, one of several newer establishments hoping to fleece the visiting public. First thing is that there is no indication of prices outside or even on the tables inside until you get a menu. Being essentially a fish and chip place the menu isn't wide and a fish meal isn't badly priced. Stray from that and it's a different story - sausage and chips £10, pie and chips the same and the vegetarian option is cold quiche.
The food is nice enough if presented a bit haphazardly - the stuffing with my chicken arrived in a single battered lump the size of a tennis ball! Service was quite quick but the seats and tables don't encourage more than eat and go.

Hello and thanks for the review,

But not quite sure what to make of it?
Let me clarify some points.
We are not new, having been there since 2012 as Scotts, and previously as a fish n chip shop since 2009.
The full menu is on display on the wall, in an illuminated display cabinet for all to see before they come inside.
We are a fish n chip shop and restaurant, that's what we do.
Prices are mid range and offer value for money, with something for all budgets, with restaurant and takeaway.
We are certainly NOT trying to fleece the visiting public??? That is strange view to take when visiting a small market town?
Hope you do try us again, as you seem overall to have enjoyed your visit?
Regards
Tony

Visited here recently and it did not disappoint. Fish and Chips were really nice, staff seemed to be a bit thin on the ground as we waited quite a while to get our table cleaned etc. The waitress took our order and it was only after she disappeared did I find a 'Seniors' Menu which some of our party would have been eligible for but she didn't even mention it which was disappointing. Overall it was a lovely experience, we will definitely return and on a plus point access for the less able was quite good too

Hello and thanks for the review,
Apologies our service wasn't quite up to our usual high standard.
The Golden Years menu is part of our regular menu and is available everyday, so certainly make sure you try that next time.
Delighted you enjoyed the food and found access into the restaurant easy.
Hope to see you back soon.

Tony
