Owner description: Helmsley Open Air Pool operates from the middle of June until early September each year. It only closes because of the weather. It is one of very few outdoor pools left in England today. It is a bit tired but we love it and every year we resurrect it and open it to the public. Outdoor swimming is a great experience and really needs to be tried to appreciate it! You are advised to call ahead we travelling any distance to ensure the Pool is open. We also try and list any closures on the web site where you can also see our opening times, charges and a whole lot more!

It is a 25m open air heated swimming pool, this is run by volunteers. Excellent fun. It was lovely and quiet, but still good to swim outside and good length. Was like stepping back in time with the changing room boxes.

“Helmsley Open Air Swimming Pool”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

We visited here for the first time on a cool ish, mostly cloudy summer's day, but the heated pool was a perfect temperature - it felt pleasantly warm when we got in but not so warm you felt like you were swimming in a bath! The staff told us it was 28 degrees.

The pool opens at certain times of day, then closes at the end of the session so check the website for times. We took advantage of the adjacent recreation ground to have a picnic and a play on the zip wire and playground, then joined the 1.15pm swim session. Note that there are no card payment facilities.

The shallow end was fine for our five year old to stand up in, but quite quickly slopes away to the deep end so be aware that young children can easily get out of their depth.

As far as I could see, and feel, the changing rooms are unheated, one of the two ladies' toilets was out of order as was the shower. It is obvious that the charity which runs the pool is very short of money. The pool itself is clean and a good size, just don't expect modern facilities! If they were able to raise money to improve the changing rooms this would certainly be a 4/5 review. Add a cafe or refreshment stand for full marks! Can't fault their customer service though, I left a pair of children's arm rings at the pool side and they are sending them back to me on a trust basis, asking that I send a cheque to cover postage once they arrive and we find out how much the postage is.

Helmsley itself is very pretty, with tea rooms, quaint shops selling local produce, a castle run by English Heritage and a bird of prey centre. We'll definitely be back.
