We were staying at the wonderful Old Vicarage in West Witton & they recommended this pub. It took us a while to find it even with our gps. But it was really worth the efforts. Definitely a pub where the locals (dogs, et. al) spend their Friday nights. My husband had the meat pie which was delicious. Lovely pastry. I had the braised duck breast cooked to perfection. Asked the waitress about the chef & was told he was an ex cook from the navy - no wonder. Proprietor/bartender was very amusing. Service was very good & friendly. The pub has a warm inviting atmosphere & variety of seating. Surprised there aren't more good reviews. Would love to go back someday.

We were camping at the Street Head Caravan Park and were too tired to go anywhere else, so we walked to this pub on site for dinner and a few pints. The inn dates back to the 1700s and has some original features. We loved the toasty warm fireplace in the central room. The crowd here is local, and some people who were clearly regulars were gathered around the bar having a hearty chat. The pub is also dog-friendly, as an adorable black lab was brought in on lead later in the evening! They have a dart board, and a pool table (50 p to play). Main dishes come with salad or veg, and chips or potato. So it ends up being quite a large portion in the end. I got lamb over sweet potato mash, with veg and potato. The sweet potato mash was the best part, and the juices/gravy from the lamb were lovely too. The meat itself was a bit tough. The veg and potato were utterly plain - just steamed with nothing at else going on, but they still rounded out the meal nicely. Service was friendly and it was a comfortable place to spend the evening! Not sure I'd go out of my way to come again, but if you're camping on site, it is so convenient that you simply cannot resist coming here for dinner. Dinner is served from 6-9 pm nightly.
